Taron Egerton Rules Himself Out of the Running for James Bond: 'It Would Be Wasted on Me'

Taron Egerton Rules Himself Out of the Running for James Bond: 'It Would Be Wasted on Me'

The race to be Denis Villeneuve's 007 is hotting up, but Taron Egerton has bowed out.
The actor, known for his roles in the Kingsman movies and as Elton John in Rocketman, may have been considered a frontrunner for James Bond after step-siblings Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson formally handed over the rights to Amazon earlier this year. He's young, fit and British, has proven he can play a great spy — why not?

'I think I'm too messy for that,' Egerton told Collider on Tuesday. 'I think I'm not [the right fit]— I really love James Bond and particularly Daniel Craig's tenure.'
'But I think I wouldn't be good at it,' he continued, 'and I think there's so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.'
Egerton added that the role would be 'quite an undertaking' at this stage in his career. 'As far as I'm aware, nobody's asking me to do it. But also, it's possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest,' he said, referring to the restrictive nature of playing Bond. 'It kind of consumes your life, a role like that.'
In a 2023 interview, Egerton said it was his weight that put him off the task of Bond. 'I've always struggled with my weight,' he said in an interview with The Telegraph. '[Bond] is a bit like being a brand ambassador as well as being an actor. And that could be really fun in microcosm, but I'm sure I read that Barbara Broccoli said that it's a 15-year commitment.'
Rumors are still swirling about who'll be tapped to take over from Daniel Craig after Dune director Villeneuve was confirmed to helm the next era of the James Bond franchise.
'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father,' the Canadian gushed in a statement after the news broke. 'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.'
The Hollywood Reporter recently took an in-depth look at the director's portfolio to decide whether he's the right man for the job.

Unearthed Story From James Bond Creator Will Shock Longtime Fans

If you're browsing the magazine section at your local bookstore, you should 100 percent grab a copy of the latest print edition of Men's Journal. And, after that, if you're ready to totally rethink your assumptions about James Bond creator Ian Fleming, you pick up an issue of the mystery magazine The Strand. In it, you'll find a recently rediscovered story penned by Fleming, which will make even his biggest fans think differently about his writing and reputation. Here's why this newly rediscovered Fleming short story is so cool, where to read it, and what it means for the legacy of James Bond. What is the new Ian Fleming short story? In the current issue of The Strand magazine, the long-time mystery and thriller publication has recently unearthed stories from both Ian Fleming and Graham Greene. The Fleming story in The Strand is titled "The Shameful Dream," and it's not about a spy or an assassin at all. Instead, the story is about an editor of a literary magazine who is 100 percent certain he's going to get fired from his job, because he's been ominously summoned to a meeting with his very rich boss. With a good amount of humor, but also self-deprecation, the narrator goes into all sorts of hypothetical situations in his mind, but also recalls the ways in which many of his other colleagues were fired or maneuvered into quitting outright. The stakes are oddly low, but the psychological realism and wit are compelling and gripping. This is a story that represents what Fleming might have been like had he not become a thriller writer, but instead, a writer of odd short stories. Fleming was very good friends with the author Kingsley Amis in real life. This story has more of a touch of that kind of writing, a sort of short story version of Lucky Jim with smart observations about social class and money. It may not be the greatest Fleming work of all time, but it is a revelation. Before he invented James Bond, Fleming's older brother, Peter Fleming, was a well-known writer and considered a true literary talent. In some ways, "The Shameful Dream" represents a road not taken for Ian Fleming, a style of writing that may have put him in the same class as his there more lost Ian Fleming Stories? The newest unearthed Ian Fleming short story in The Strand is not the only bit of new lost Fleming writing out there. It's actually an excerpt from a new book called Talk of the Devil, which was published in May in the U.S. by Harper Collins. Talk of the Devil includes this new short story, as well as several unpublished essays and various travelogues, which Fleming was famous for. While we're waiting for more news about the next James Bond film, The Strand's new excerpt and Talk of the Devil are great ways to dive deep into the universe of James Bond, and into unexplored artistic territories, charted by the man who started it Story From James Bond Creator Will Shock Longtime Fans first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 24, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

'Peaky Blinders' Creator Reportedly Will Write Next James Bond Movie

Although the next James Bond movie will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, the actual script might be written by veteran British writer Steven Knight. And, if that name is familiar, it should be. Knight is not only the writer of movies like Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, but he's also the creator of the sensational crime drama, Peaky Blinders. Although not announced formally by Amazon MGM, Deadline has reported that "sources" are saying that "Steven Knight has been set to write the pic." If confirmed, this will almost certainly be good news for Bond fans. But, could Knight's resume give us a bigger hint as to what the movie is about? Steven Knight's movie and TV track record Until very recently, Knight was actually attached to write the next Star Wars film focused on Daisy Ridley's Rey, though, as someone who has been writing screenplays for several decades, the notion of changing projects is very common. But, in terms of Knight's biggest work, Peaky Blinders is probably the best indication of where he could take a James Bond film. At once violent, dramatic, and with a touch of elegance, Peaky Blinders arguably made Cillian Murphy into an even bigger star than he already was. And, the show also proved that British action-adventure and crime dramas don't always have to be set in the present. But, wait. What could that mean for Bond?Could the new James Bond be a period piece? Because of Knight's work on Peaky Blinders (and his work on the 2019 Christmas Carol), one might jump to the conclusion that the next Bond reboot film could be set in the past. In fact, the idea that the next James Bond reboot movie could be a period piece is a rumor that's been circulating for at least two years. Recently, Andor creator Tony Gilroy even mentioned that a historical Bond was something he and Steven Soderbergh attempted decades ago, and that he believed it was possible that the plan for the next Amazon-produced Bond was similar to he and Soderbergh 1960s throwback that never happened. "It sounds to me very much like what they're doing now," Gilory said. A James Bond movie set in the 1960s would be one thing, but perhaps the more interesting move here would be if Steven Knight went back to the actual beginning of James Bond: the 1950s. If Villeneuve and Knight are doing a direct adaptation of one Ian Fleming's novels, then a historical Bond movie set in, say, 1953, would be incredible. In fact, it would be the one thing that the franchise has never done, not once: A period-accurate adaptation of one of Fleming's original books. Could Knight and Villeneuve make it happen? If so, the next era for James Bond might be the realization of Fleming's dream, seven decades later.'Peaky Blinders' Creator Reportedly Will Write Next James Bond Movie first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 31, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

One Marvel Star Maybe Just Took Himself Out of the Running For James Bond and Nobody Noticed

Once Denis Villeneuve was named as the director for the next James Bond movie, rumors immediately started flying as to who he might want as the new 007. At the top of that list of possible actors was Tom Holland, best known to millions as the incumbent Peter Parker in the Spider-Man and Avengers films. But now, it's possible that Holland has quietly taken himself out of the running for Bond. Here's why. Will Tom Holland be the next James Bond? While it's possible that Holland could still be cast as James Bond, his commitments to other projects, including various Marvel films, might prevent that from happening. In fact, in a new interview with the U.K. edition of GQ, published on August 1, 2025, Holland indicated he will be taking a break from acting sometime in 2027. "You can't be in every movie, and you can't do your best work when you're burnt out," Holland said in the interview, referring to the idea that he wants to avoid burnout. "I've got a slightly busy year next year, and then I'll probably take a bit more time off in 2027. We'll see." The busy year next year almost certainly refers to the fact that Holland will be promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters a year from now, on July 31, 2026. But, does that mean Holland won't be shooting a new film in 2026 or 2027?The Next James Bond Movie's Possible Release Date As of this writing, Amazon MGM has not nailed down an exact release window for the next James Bond movie. But 2027 is possible. Assuming the film was cast by the end of 2025, and went into production sometime in 2026, that means a release date of anytime in 2027 is reasonable. At least hypothetically. So, if Tom Holland is taking "time off" in 2027, that seems to suggest he's not going to play James Bond. Unless, of course, the movie is done by that point, which would mean he could maybe still be in the running. Still, with so many other actors' names being floated for the role, it seems more likely that Holland won't become both Bond and Peter Parker within the same couple of years. And, until there's a big bombshell dropped by Amazon, the next face of 007 will remain in the Marvel Star Maybe Just Took Himself Out of the Running For James Bond and Nobody Noticed first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 1, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword
