Generative Engine Optimization, GEO, A Playbook For Online Retailers

Google's search loosing relevance for e-commerce, and Amazon's homepage is losing traffic. The future belongs to AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. For brands to stay visible, they must embrace Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) also called LLMO, or AEO. Content is still king — but the rules have changed. Yesterday, shoppers browsed; today, they ask. Instead of scrolling through endless menus or filtering product grids, consumers now turn to AI assistants — and the answers drive their purchases. A new front door to retail has opened, but it no longer belongs to the retailer or Google or Amazon. It belongs to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. And for retailers, the stakes couldn't be higher. The End Of The Homepage Just as media outlets once lost homepage traffic to Google and Facebook, retailers are now facing the same shift — only faster. Consumers aren't browsing your carefully designed website anymore; they're asking AI assistants. 'Best outdoor jacket near me' is no longer the query. Instead, someone might ask: ChatGPT responds with: Claude, meanwhile, suggests: Claude or ChatGPT have the power to say what will be found, a position formerly only Google had. It's not hard to understand why I wrote earlier this year about e-commerce unbundling. But where are Mammut, Columbia, or The North Face? These brands have quality products, yet they're absent. The reason? Training data. Models surface answers based on the content they've been exposed to. Patagonia, REI, and Helium have done a better job supplying structured, high-quality information to AI systems. If your brand isn't present in AI answers, you're effectively invisible. GEO > SEO — Generative Engine Optimization Takes Over How to get noticed in this new e-commerce order? Content, Content, Content. But, the old SEO playbook — keywords, backlinks, and blogspam — won't work. AI assistants don't crawl for short-form content. They rely on authentic, Q&A-rich, structured data that helps them understand and contextualize answers. Enter Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also known as Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Large Language Model Optimization (LLMO). The rules have changed: AI-driven traffic is still small in volume—but its impact is outsized. Studies show that traffic originating from LLMs converts up to 9x better than other channels. Why? Because recommendations feel personal, contextual, and trustworthy. One example stands out: a consumer uploaded their blood results into ChatGPT and immediately purchased €200 worth of vitamins—no browsing, no comparison, pure trust. And timing matters. Soon, most large language models will introduce paid placement channels. Brands mentioned organically today will enjoy a lasting competitive advantage tomorrow. The window to secure this advantage is now. For two decades, I've built data and monitoring tools—and I've seen this movie before. In the early days of social media, brands obsessively measured mentions without asking the deeper question: what exactly should we measure? Take the jacket example again. If a user specifically asks, 'What's the lightest jacket on the market?' the answer might be the Montbell Versalite. But do users ask those hyper-specific questions. We don't know and OpenAI or Google will not tell us. The challenge for brands is therefore to predict what users will be looking for. One thing is for sure, it wont be the marketing copy the company put out. Rather one should be tapping into Just don't run and start to monitor your brand but rather try to understand the best set of questions to monitor. Training LLMs is expensive—Elon Musk recently revealed he spends $1 billion per month on training xAI. Models won't index every piece of content; they prioritize information that is authentic, novel, and trusted. Your goal isn't just to be searchable. Over are the times where 'keywords' were all you need to do. You need to the models who you are so you become part of their default answer set. The New Generative Engine Optimization Playbook for Brands Until AI assistants open up fully to paid placement, organic visibility depends on creating content designed for LLMs to learn from as I outlined in this Forbes article The homepage isn't dying — it's obsolete. The battle for discovery has shifted to AI assistants, and the winners will be the brands that learn to optimize for answers, not clicks. The future of retail belongs to those brands who have a unique story to tell. As I said more than once 'The future is Indie'. Agree? Disagree? Have a different take? I've posted the Forbes article here on LinkedIn — add your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss.

Hertz Stock (HTZ) in the Fast Lane as it Hitches a Ride With Amazon Autos

Shares in rental car firm Hertz (HTZ) motored over 6% higher today after getting behind the wheel with Amazon (AMZN) Autos. The partnership will see Hertz selling some of its used cars on Amazon Autos. It means customers can search online to browse, finance, and buy thousands of used Hertz fleet vehicles from brands like Ford (F), Toyota (TM), and others. Hertz Car Sales, the rental car firm's used car sales arm, will be the first fleet dealer on Amazon Autos. Buying Experience Hertz Car Sales executive vice president Jeff Adams said he wanted to 'reimagine the car-buying experience.' Hertz said sales will begin in the Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle metro areas, with plans to expand to Hertz Car Sales' 45 locations nationwide. After customers complete their purchase online, they can pick up the vehicles at Hertz locations in those cities. 'This collaboration allows us to offer an expanded selection of well-maintained vehicles from more dealerships across the country,' Global Head of Amazon Autos, Fan Jin said. Amazon's addition of Hertz vehicles is another huge move for its auto sales business. Last year, it struck a deal with Hyundai (HYMLF) to sell new vehicles in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Amazon users can buy and finance vehicles from local participating dealers directly on Amazon's website or app. Good Hertz Hertz has had a strong 2025 to date, with its share price surging over 50%. It has been helped by the uncertain economic environment as drivers look more closely at the used car market. It has also expanded programs such as its popular Hertz Rent2Buy offering to more than 100 cities. Again, this is tapping into consumers increasingly embracing the 'try before you buy' approach. In its latest earnings report for the second quarter of 2025, Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. announced significant improvements in profitability, marking its best quarterly results in nearly two years. The company highlighted a half-billion-dollar improvement in net income and adjusted corporate EBITDA, driven by strategic initiatives in fleet management, operational efficiency, and cost control. Is HTZ a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, HTZ has a Moderate Sell consensus based on 4 Hold and 4 Sell ratings. Its highest price target is $6. HTZ stock's consensus price target is $4.30, implying a 21.53% downside.

An Android Amazon Tablet? Amazon Stock (NASDAQ:AMZN) Slides on Potential Change

Online retail giant Amazon (AMZN) is known for its internal hardware, and for the Fire operating system (OS) that runs it. But there is a chance that the next Amazon tablet could feature something completely different: an Android OS built in. Investors did not seem particularly happy about this, however, and sent Amazon shares sliding nearly 2% in Wednesday morning's trading. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Reports note that, not only will the new tablet boast a whole new operating system, but also, it will be a 'higher-end' tablet, suggesting a significant performance upgrade. Currently, Amazon's tablets run on what is known as a 'forked' version of Android, which means that any apps made for the tablet have to be compatible with FireOS, and be distributed on the Amazon App Store. But with a tablet that runs strictly on Android, a whole new range of apps could be made available for Amazon tablets. Since this is a higher-end tablet, though, it will also come with a pretty hefty price tag. New reports suggest that this tablet will run about $400, a far cry from the $230 Amazon charged for the Fire Max 11. Though for those watching their budgets more closely, Amazon already plans some new devices running Vega, a Linux-based platform that Amazon uses in some of the Fire TV devices. A Raftload of Recalls But Amazon also offered word about several recalls of products sold on its site. The recalls impact about 190,000 total products, and cover a wide range of product classes from wireless power banks to a certain kind of hair dryer. The devices represent a range of different threats, from electrocution risk to '…potential child poisoning.' For instance, a hair dryer from Empower Brands apparently lacks an 'immersion protection device,' which means that the hair dryer could cause electrocution if it were ever dropped into water that someone was standing in. Amazon actually has a recall page, so more information on getting refunds and finding out if your purchases were impacted should be available therein. Is Amazon a Good Long-Term Investment? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on AMZN stock based on 44 Buys and one Hold assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 26.59% rally in its share price over the past year, the average AMZN price target of $264.56 per share implies 18.67% upside potential. Disclosure
