BM has rapidly established itself as a serious enterprise AI contender. It combines a full-stack platform strategy, proprietary models, deep integration with Red Hat hybrid cloud infrastructure, and global consulting scale. It's executing a multi-pronged approach that is already delivering operational leverage and financial upside.
Its approach is paying off. In its most recent earnings, IBM disclosed that it'd grown its book of AI-related business to $5 billion in less than two years, with approximately 80% of that stemming from consulting engagements and the remainder from software subscriptions.
IBM detailed its AI strategy at its recent investor day. It's a strategy centered on a pragmatic, enterprise-first approach that can deliver trusted, efficient, and domain-relevant AI solutions. IBM's AI straetgy brings together infrastructure software from Red Hat, foundation models from IBM Research, customer enablement capabilities from IBM Consulting, and integration with a broad ecosystem of partners.
Unlike some competitors focused on developing massive general-purpose models, IBM's bet is on smaller, specialized models, deployed across hybrid cloud environments, and tightly integrated with its consulting services and data platforms. The goal is to help businesses operationalize AI in a way that's scalable, secure, and aligned with real-world enterprise needs.
This is an approach particularly well-suited for companies in regulated industries — such as financial services, healthcare, and government — where data security, governance, and compliance concerns are paramount.
At the core of IBM's AI stack is watsonx, an end-to-end platform designed to support the entire AI lifecycle. Watsonx allows businesses to build and train models using both IBM's proprietary tools and open-source models while also enabling them to fine-tune those models using their proprietary data.
One of the most critical components of this platform is Granite, IBM's family of smaller, purpose-built foundation models tailored for enterprise use cases like code generation, document processing, and virtual agents.
These cost-efficient, interpretable models are built to perform well in sensitive, highly regulated environments. IBM has even open-sourced several Granite models to support transparency and community-led development.
IBM's AI technology is further strengthened by its integration with Red Hat's hybrid cloud tools. OpenShift AI and RHEL AI provide the infrastructure to build, deploy, and manage AI applications across on-premises, private, and public cloud environments. This hybrid model offers flexibility for enterprises that need control over their data while still wanting the agility of cloud-native services.
Global system integrators are integral to helping IT organizations navigate complex new technologies, especially enterprise AI. Enterprises often struggle to understand the new technology while also attempting to extract value quickly. GSIs thrive in this market, promising quick time-to-value for AI transformation projects.
A defining strength of IBM's approach is the synergy between its AI stack and its global consulting business. IBM Consulting, with its 'hybrid by design' approach, is central in driving client adoption of watsonx and Granite. This helps enterprises bring AI into mission-critical workflows across HR, procurement, customer service, and supply chain operations.
IBM Consulting competes directly against companies like NTT DATA, Deloitte, Cognizant, and Capgemini. Each of these companies has AI platforms in place and AI-specific engagement models that offer a compelling choice for enterprises.
Partnerships play a critical role in IBM's AI strategy. The company has built a rich ecosystem of collaborators that includes hyperscalers, chipmakers, open-source communities, and enterprise software vendors.
Rather than trying to build and control every component internally, IBM focuses on integrating and orchestrating AI capabilities across a broad range of technologies. This strategy enables IBM to deliver value through its innovations and the strength of its partner network.

Collaboration extends to the systems integrators and hardware vendors that form the backbone of many enterprise deployments. IBM is working alongside companies like Dell, Lenovo, and Nokia to deliver AI-ready infrastructure, and has formed go-to-market alliances with integrators and resellers to accelerate customer adoption.
Financially, IBM's AI bets are translating into real momentum. In its latest earnings release, the company reported that its book of AI business has grown to over $5 billion, and its software division posted double-digit growth in 2024 — its strongest in years — mainly fueled by demand for AI and hybrid cloud solutions.
Free cash flow climbed to $12.7 billion, and IBM reports that for every dollar spent on watsonx, clients invest five to six dollars more across IBM's broader software and consulting portfolio. This multiplier effect highlights the strength of IBM's integrated offerings.
Most AI-related revenue still comes from consulting, reflecting the power of IBM's services-led go-to-market model. However, the company's strategy of combining Red Hat infrastructure, watsonx software, and consulting expertise is clearly gaining traction.
The tight integration of its software, infrastructure, and services sets IBM apart in the enterprise AI space. Red Hat's OpenShift and RHEL AI form the infrastructure foundation of IBM's AI strategy, powering the deployment of watsonx across diverse cloud and edge environments.
IBM Consulting brings the human element, delivering AI solutions tailored to industry-specific challenges in sectors such as banking, healthcare, manufacturing, and government. Together, these arms of IBM provide the technological muscle and domain expertise needed to bring AI from concept to production at enterprise scale.
IBM's end-to-end approach, spanning model development, deployment, governance, and business transformation, is a strategy that's clearly working. It's also a strategy that's difficult for competitors to match.
As bookings grow, platform adoption accelerates, and ecosystem partnerships deepen, IBM is reshaping its identity around AI, hybrid cloud, and consulting. The company's ability to commercialize AI through a tightly connected stack of products, platforms, and people makes it one of the most interesting and credible enterprise AI players today.

Climate adaptation has many challenges, but the disconnect between the world of finance and the universe of innovations and solutions to help us live on a hotter planet is arguably the most astonishing. It is perhaps the biggest market failure of our times. Around the world, scientists are working on new crop strains that are resistant to drought, flooding, and the increase in salinity of river delta soils. They are producing ever-more accurate and detailed weather forecasting tools. They are devising new technologies to harvest and save water, to fight disease, to control pests. This is vital work aimed at protecting us from the next famine, the next pandemic, or the next climate shock. But all too often, innovations die in the lab. Scientists already struggle to get their research funded. Finding additional backers for setting up pilot projects and testing new ideas in a commercial setting is often beyond their means. Getty Images This finance gap is frustrating because the commercial opportunities are real, and enormous. BlackRock, the global asset manager, sees climate adaptation emerging as "a new investment theme," with "extensive investment needed in products and solutions that build climate resilience." And GIC, the sovereign wealth fund of Singapore, estimates that annual global revenues from selected climate-adaptation solutions will grow to $4 trillion by 2050, from $1 trillion today. The corresponding investment opportunity is expected to surge from $2 trillion to $9 trillion over the same period. GIC predicts that climate adaptation will fuel growth across emerging technologies such as weather intelligence and traditional sectors such as construction and materials for more resilient buildings and infrastructure. Yet globally, less than 3 percent of adaptation actions are financed by private capital. Scaling Up Private Finance Why are financiers missing this opportunity? Partly, they are deterred by the perceived riskiness and uncertain returns integral to any new economic activity. Will governments, companies, and individuals be prudent enough to invest now that they face the rising probability of bad things happening in the future? How do we value innovations whose main purpose—like vaccines—is to prevent catastrophes from happening? Is a lack of information—dare we say imagination—to blame? We need more visibility, more foresight, and more awareness of the commercial opportunities climate resilience offers to bridge the finance gap for adaptation solutions. And that means engaging the full force of private capital—venture capitalists, private equity, and institutional investors—who are best placed to take early bets on scalable solutions. Consider Mirova's €350 million Sustainable Land Fund, which blends public and private capital to invest in nature-positive agriculture and land use. This kind of structure offers a powerful model for de-risking investment and catalyzing private capital at scale. Or look at the success of agritech startups raising early-stage VC funding in Kenya and India to deploy mobile platforms that deliver climate-resilient farming advice to smallholders—proving both commercial viability and impact. From an institutional perspective, we must also be smarter in the way we allocate public funding for adaptation. With public finances under pressure and development aid budgets shrinking, we need to make every cent count. Norway's strategy is to deploy public funds to leverage private capital for climate adaptation. In Africa, it is supporting a program to extend insurance against climate disasters to governments, cities, humanitarian organizations, and NGOs. The funds go toward helping insurers mitigate the risks of underwriting disaster relief policies. Climate adaptation often involves quite simple solutions that nonetheless require big investments. In South Africa, Norfund, the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries, has invested in ANB Group, a citrus and tropical fruit producer and exporter that needed to install nets to protect its crops from hail and other forms of extreme weather. The Global Center on Adaptation, meanwhile, has joined forces with CGIAR, a global network of agricultural research institutions, to scale up innovation for climate adaptation. Together, they are helping some of the largest financiers in Africa, including the African Development Bank, invest in the most effective new techniques. Accelerating Impact Often, a private partner's technological knowhow can be as valuable as its funding for turning great ideas into products that help people adapt to climate change. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a prime example. CGIAR has secured funding from the philanthropic arm of the tech champion, to use AI to screen some 132,000 strains of rice held in its gene banks around the world. The aim is to identify the most nutritious, high-yielding, and climate-resilient varieties in a fraction of the time it used to take. It is this creative union of technology, financing, and research power that gives us hope for the future. Many solutions to adapt, and even thrive, in a warming planet exist. The only missing piece in the equation is the entrepreneurship and capital needed to take these solutions to market. The climate adaptation ecosystem is a $4 trillion opportunity. Why say no to that? 'SF, we're coming for you:' We went to NYC Tech Week, where everyone is saying the city is the land of opportunity

One of the clearest takeaways from New York's Andreessen Horowitz-sponsored Tech Week — a decentralized sprawl of happy hours with panoramic rooftop views, panels, and, this year, pickleball matches — was this: When it comes to building startups from AI to consumer to deep tech, New York is no longer playing catch up to attract startup interest. It might just be pulling ahead. "People don't come to New York to live in a group house and code all night and never see anyone else," said Julie Samuels, the president and CEO of Tech:NYC, an organization that promotes tech founders and entrepreneurship in the city, at a panel on Monday focused on AI startup innovation. Samules added that New York is the place to be for any founders eager to move fast on product and head count. "New Yorkers hire," she said. "People want to live here, have always wanted and will continue to want to live here." Getting into Tech Week wasn't exactly easy: Many events were full or required pre-approval on Partiful, the Andreessen-backed invite platform of choice. Still, Business Insider managed to drop in on a few of the week's activities, like a boozy happy hour on the rooftop of IBM's sleek Manhattan headquarters and Gen Z founders hobnobbing at a cosmetics store, to see what all the hype was about. NY is going all in on AI San Francisco has long reigned supreme as home to the industry's hottest AI startups: big-name LLM developers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Claude are all headquartered there, along with numerous other young companies at the app and infrastructure layer. One of the biggest themes at New York's tech week events, however, is that the Big Apple isn't just ready to welcome an AI startup here and there. The city's tech community is pushing to become a destination for all things AI. "The entire AI stack is in New York — you have ecosystems, agents, apps," said Emily Fontaine, IBM's global head of venture capital, during a panel discussion at the company's Madison Avenue headquarters early in the week. "When you come to New York, you have the whole spectrum to invest in," she said. "These are all companies that are well developed, have a product, and are starting to get revenue." Fontaine added that in New York, "compared to SF, you have strong founders who are actually driving revenue who are excited to go to market with us." At a power walk to kick off the event, most founders couldn't stop talking about AI. They spanned industries and geographies, but one told BI he was determined to make New York City the country's startup capital. "It's the second best. I want to make it the biggest startup ecosystem in the world," Somya Gupta, who cofounded an AI education startup, said. "SF, we're coming for you!" Founder Ben Spray said his next venture is an AI-powered IT department, but that the AI component is a marketing strategy, given how hot the technology is. "It's a little bit of a branding move," he told BI. "I mean, take my AI IT department — it's really just an IT department built from the ground up to fit into the AI world." Even local and state politicians are getting in on the AI push. At an Axios panel on Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she's keen on using AI to train 100,000 state employees in offices like the DMV. "I'm not looking to eliminate their jobs," she said. "I see great potential here, and I leaned hard into this." Defense and hardware head East Science, defense, and hardware-oriented startups, known as deep tech companies, are a red-hot sector on the West Coast, though the New York scene is finally heating up. One standout was the rooftop party in SoHo hosted by Haus, a deep tech public relations and communications firm, and Stonegardens Advisory, a consultancy that advises startups breaking into defense. With swanky cocktails and cheese boards piled high, panelists dished out how to win key government contracts early. "The end goal was ultimately to help people who are building the space understand what it means to work with the Department of Defense, which is increasingly opening itself up to startups and learning how to work with these more early-stage companies," Daniel Oberhaus, who founded Haus, told BI in an interview. (Last week, the Pentagon launched a program to back college-founded startups that serve both commercial and government customers.) Deep tech may not be as big of a thing in New York as it is in El Segundo, Calif., a nucleus of aerospace, defense, and energy companies, Oberhaus admitted. But Newlab, a warehouse and startup space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, thinks that New York's software chops and engineering talent will make the city's hardware companies rival the West Coast. Newlab is tricked out with offices and labs, which have attracted early-stage deep tech startups. A hub for consumer apps and Gen Z founders Consumer startups — especially those built for or by Gen Z — are also having a moment in the city that never sleeps. At one happy hour on Wednesday, founders of consumer startups mingled over drinks to talk about the apps they're building. Naturally, the event (which was cohosted by Consumer Club, a Discord community for consumer founders, and Superwall, a paywall tool for apps) took place at coworking space and consumer startup hub Verci. Some startups in the crowd included BePresent, a screen time control app that works out of the Verci space. A16z's Speedrun startup school also had a presence there, with an investor and recent alumni, like Waveful, a social network that was part of the most recent Speedrun cohort. Lekondo, a visual search engine for fashion, told us they were recently accepted into Speedrun's upcoming cohort. That same night, we also stopped by another mixer for Gen Z founders and creators, put together by Natalie Neptune, founder of GenZtea, an IRL events business that aims to connect brands with Gen Z, at skincare brand Kiehl's. Nathaneo Johnson, a Yale student who cofounded the buzzy professional networking startup Series, was among the Gen Z founders in the crowd. "You're seeing an increase of these AI-powered social networks," said Neptune. The NY vs. SF debate rages on Wherever we went, the techies were ready to socialize — perhaps markedly different from the builder culture vibe in San Francisco. Loosened up by seemingly endless trays of spicy margaritas and champagne at yet another rooftop party, this one at IBM, the crowd was lively and relaxed. Attendees, wearing button-downs rumpled from a day's work, didn't just talk business: Conversations evolved into debates on everything from global politics to the misfortunes of dating in New York City. "Tech Week has proven NYC is a mainstay and a competitive market for tech," Molly O'Shea, founder of venture-focused newsletter Sourcery, told BI in a text. O'Shea moderated two panels at Tech Week. "I'm sure many visitors (like me) are contemplating moving here to get some of this energy."

Beyond the backlash: What evidence shows about the economic impact of DEI

Nora Carol Photography via Getty Images Few issues in the U.S. today are as controversial as diversity, equity and inclusion – commonly referred to as DEI. Although the term didn't come into common usage until the 21st century, DEI is best understood as the latest stage in a long American project. Its egalitarian principles are seen in America's founding documents, and its roots lie in landmark 20th-century efforts such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act and affirmative action policies, as well as movements for racial justice, gender equity, disability rights, veterans and immigrants. These movements sought to expand who gets to participate in economic, educational and civic life. DEI programs, in many ways, are their legacy. Critics argue that DEI is antidemocratic, that it fosters ideological conformity and that it leads to discriminatory initiatives, which they say disadvantage white people and undermine meritocracy. Those defending DEI argue just the opposite: that it encourages critical thinking and promotes democracy − and that attacks on DEI amount to a retreat from long-standing civil rights law. Yet missing from much of the debate is a crucial question: What are the tangible costs and benefits of DEI? Who benefits, who doesn't, and what are the broader effects on society and the economy? As a sociologist, I believe any productive conversation about DEI should be rooted in evidence, not ideology. So let's look at the research. Who gains from DEI? In the corporate world, DEI initiatives are intended to promote diversity, and research consistently shows that diversity is good for business. Companies with more diverse teams tend to perform better across several key metrics, including revenue, profitability and worker satisfaction. Businesses with diverse workforces also have an edge in innovation, recruitment and competitiveness, research shows. The general trend holds for many types of diversity, including age, race and ethnicity, and gender. A focus on diversity can also offer profit opportunities for businesses seeking new markets. Two-thirds of American consumers consider diversity when making their shopping choices, a 2021 survey found. So-called 'inclusive consumers' tend to be female, younger and more ethnically and racially diverse. Ignoring their values can be costly: When Target backed away from its DEI efforts, the resulting backlash contributed to a sales decline. But DEI goes beyond corporate policy. At its core, it's about expanding access to opportunities for groups historically excluded from full participation in American life. From this broader perspective, many 20th-century reforms can be seen as part of the DEI arc. Consider higher education. Many elite U.S. universities refused to admit women until well into the 1960s and 1970s. Columbia, the last Ivy League university to go co-ed, started admitting women in 1982. Since the advent of affirmative action, women haven't just closed the gender gap in higher education – they outpace men in college completion across all racial groups. DEI policies have particularly benefited women, especially white women, by expanding workforce access. Similarly, the push to desegregate American universities was followed by an explosion in the number of Black college students – a number that has increased by 125% since the 1970s, twice the national rate. With college gates open to more people than ever, overall enrollment at U.S. colleges has quadrupled since 1965. While there are many reasons for this, expanding opportunity no doubt plays a role. And a better-educated population has had significant implications for productivity and economic growth. The 1965 Immigration Act also exemplifies DEI's impact. It abolished racial and national quotas, enabling the immigration of more diverse populations, including from Asia, Africa, southern and eastern Europe and Latin America. Many of these immigrants were highly educated, and their presence has boosted U.S. productivity and innovation. Ultimately, the U.S. economy is more profitable and productive as a result of immigrants. What does DEI cost? While DEI generates returns for many businesses and institutions, it does come with costs. In 2020, corporate America spent an estimated US$7.5 billion on DEI programs. And in 2023, the federal government spent more than $100 million on DEI, including $38.7 million by the Department of Health and Human Services and another $86.5 million by the Department of Defense. The government will no doubt be spending less on DEI in 2025. One of President Donald Trump's first acts in his second term was to sign an executive order banning DEI practices in federal agencies – one of several anti-DEI executive orders currently facing legal challenges. More than 30 states have also introduced or enacted bills to limit or entirely restrict DEI in recent years. Central to many of these policies is the belief that diversity lowers standards, replacing meritocracy with mediocrity. But a large body of research disputes this claim. For example, a 2023 McKinsey & Company report found that companies with higher levels of gender and ethnic diversity will likely financially outperform those with the least diversity by at least 39%. Similarly, concerns that DEI in science and technology education leads to lowering standards aren't backed up by scholarship. Instead, scholars are increasingly pointing out that disparities in performance are linked to built-in biases in courses themselves. That said, legal concerns about DEI are rising. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Department of Justice have recently warned employers that some DEI programs may violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Anecdotal evidence suggests that reverse discrimination claims, particularly from white men, are increasing, and legal experts expect the Supreme Court to lower the burden of proof needed by complainants for such cases. The issue remains legally unsettled. But while the cases work their way through the courts, women and people of color will continue to shoulder much of the unpaid volunteer work that powers corporate DEI initiatives. This pattern raises important equity concerns within DEI itself. What lies ahead for DEI? People's fears of DEI are partly rooted in demographic anxiety. Since the U.S. Census Bureau projected in 2008 that non-Hispanic white people would become a minority in the U.S by the year 2042, nationwide news coverage has amplified white fears of displacement. Research indicates many white men experience this change as a crisis of identity and masculinity, particularly amid economic shifts such as the decline of blue-collar work. This perception aligns with research showing that white Americans are more likely to believe DEI policies disadvantage white men than white women. At the same time, in spite of DEI initiatives, women and people of color are most likely to be underemployed and living in poverty regardless of how much education they attain. The gender wage gap remains stark: In 2023, women working full time earned a median weekly salary of $1,005 compared with $1,202 for men − just 83.6% of what men earned. Over a 40-year career, that adds up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost earnings. For Black and Latina women, the disparities are even worse, with one source estimating lifetime losses at $976,800 and $1.2 million, respectively. Racism, too, carries an economic toll. A 2020 analysis from Citi found that systemic racism has cost the U.S. economy $16 trillion since 2000. The same analysis found that addressing these disparities could have boosted Black wages by $2.7 trillion, added up to $113 billion in lifetime earnings through higher college enrollment, and generated $13 trillion in business revenue, creating 6.1 million jobs annually. In a moment of backlash and uncertainty, I believe DEI remains a vital if imperfect tool in the American experiment of inclusion. Rather than abandon it, the challenge now, from my perspective, is how to refine it: grounding efforts not in slogans or fear, but in fairness and evidence.
