Massive Blow To BCCI, Asked To Pay Rs 538 Crore By Bombay High Court. Details Here

The Bombay High Court has upheld the arbitral, directing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay Rs 538 crore to the now defunct IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Kochi Tuskers Kerala was terminated by the BCCI in 2011 after playing just one season. The BCCI had terminated the franchise after just one season (2011), accusing the team of a contract breach after failing to submit a bank guarantee on time, which was required under the agreement.
"The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited. BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute, is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award," the court said in its ruling.
In 2015, the BCCI was asked to pay Rs 550 crore -- 384 crore to KCPL and 153 crore to Rendenzvous sport -- to IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers after an arbitration ruled in favour of the team recently. The BCCI had challenged the tribunal's verdict in court.
"We have got arbitrator Lahoti's report. The majority of the members are of the opinion of appealing against arbitrator's report. We are seeking legal opinion," the then IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla told PTI after a Governing Council meeting.
The franchise which was bought for a whooping Rs 1,550 crore a year ago defaulted on their annual payment after which the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated their contract in 2011. The franchise won the case against the BCCI and the court ordered the board to pay Rs 550 crore.
In their only season, the franchise finished eighth in the 10-team table after winning six out of 14 league games. Besides Hodge, Mahela Jayawardene, Brendon McCullum and Ravindra Jadeja all featured for the franchise in their only IPL season.

'OG Bad Boy': Hardik Pandya's Interaction With Hollywood Superstar Breaks Internet

Indian cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya 's interaction on social media with Hollywood superstar Will Smith has gone viral. Hardik posted a selfie on his Instagram account that quickly got popular among his followers. However, among the many comments, one was from Will Smith who decided to post a 'salute' emoji. Hardik responded with a similar emoji and wrote - 'OG Bad Boy'. It was in reference to Will Smith's popular film 'Bad Boys' which released back in 1995 and became a massive hit. Earlier, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya met Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Sunday. Sharing a post on X, Radhakrishnan expressed his delight after meeting both the players and said, "Delighted to meet our respected Indian Cricket Team Players Shri. @hardikpandya7 Ji and Shri. @krunalpandya24 Ji today at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on a courtesy meet. My best wishes." Hardik Pandya, after a successful stint as captain of the Gujarat Titans, returned to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. MI failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs. In 2025, IPL Pandya took MI to the Qualifier 2, where Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer led from the front as PBKS completed a convincing chase to beat MI by five wickets, thus booking their place in the final of IPL 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Krunal Pandya was named Player of the Match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 18th edition final against Punjab Kings. Krunal, who Bengaluru acquired for Rs 5.75 crore, unleashed every weapon from his fully-loaded arsenal in the high-stakes final and left the spectators spellbound and returning with figures of 2/17 in his four-over spell. He single-handedly broke the backbone of Punjab's attempt to hunt down the 191-run target and steered Bengaluru to a six-run triumph and RCB's first IPL trophy victory. In his memorable outing, Krunal returned with the priceless scalps of Prabhsimran Singh (26) and Josh Inglis (39) to derail Punjab's attempts to chase the target. (WIth ANI inputs)

Women In Delhi Can Now Work Night Shifts In Shops, Commercial Establishments

New Delhi: Women in Delhi can now legally work night shifts in shops and commercial establishments, with the government easing long-standing restrictions under the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision on Tuesday, saying that the policy will boost women workforce participation and expand the city's potential as a 24x7 economy. The government plans to amend Sections 14, 15, and 16 of the 1954 Act, which currently prohibit women from working night hours, defined as between 9 pm and 7 am in summer and 8 pm to 8 am in winter. Once the change is in effect, these restrictions will no longer apply, allowing businesses to employ women in round-the-clock operations, provided they follow strict safety and workplace requirements. "This is a step toward increasing women's participation in the workforce while ensuring their safety and dignity at the workplace," Chief Minister Gupta said. "We are not just changing a rule, we're also creating a framework where women feel secure and supported during night hours," she added. Safety Protocols Mandatory The new policy comes with non-negotiable conditions for employers. Written consent from women employees will be required before assigning night shifts. The establishments must provide secure transportation for night duty, round-the-clock CCTV coverage, an adequate number of female security personnel, and an Internal Complaints Committee under the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Act, restrooms, lockers, and break rooms and wages must be paid via bank or ECS, and all legal benefits like ESI, Provident Fund, bonuses, weekly offs, and overtime pay will be mandatory. Policy Awaiting Lt Governor's Approval The proposal will be sent to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. Similar policies are already in place in states like Haryana, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Delhi's move follows months of internal discussions and demands from industry bodies looking to expand night-time operations. "This will help establish Delhi as a 24x7 business hub and also contribute to improving the capital's Ease of Doing Business rankings," the Chief Minister said.

Patna: In a bid to boost dairy infrastructure, public amenities and urban connectivity, the state cabinet on Tuesday approved a series of development proposals amounting to over Rs 2,000 crore, including the installation of dairy equipment in five districts and major land acquisitions for religious and cultural projects. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now One of the key decisions was the approval of Rs 316 crore for installing dairy equipment at five locations under the Bihar State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation (Comfed). The installations aim to enhance milk collection, cooling, processing, and milk powder production, directly benefiting farmers' groups affiliated with Comfed. "These proposals are aimed at increasing the dairy sector's contribution to the gross state domestic product (GSDP), boosting milk production, raising farmers' incomes, expanding cooperative activities and creating employment opportunities," said S Siddharth, additional chief secretary of the cabinet secretariat department. The dairy initiative, proposed by the animal and fish resources department, will be partially funded through the Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) Cluster Development Fund (SCDF) with Comfed contributing the rest. Milk collection and processing plants will be installed in Darbhanga, Wazirganj (Gaya) and Gopalganj while milk powder production units will be set up at Dehri-on-Sone (Rohtas) and Sitamarhi. Darbhanga and Wazirganj will each get 2 lakh litre-per-day (LLPD) capacity plants costing Rs 71 crore and Rs 50 crore, respectively. Gopalganj's 1 LLPD facility will cost Rs 54 crore. The milk powder plants at Dehri and Sitamarhi will have a capacity of 30 metric tonnes per day each with corresponding investments of Rs 69 crore and Rs 70 crore. The cabinet also approved the revised estimate of Rs 165 crore for acquiring 50 acres of land near the Ma Janaki Mandir at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Sitakund festival, held near Munger and known to draw both domestic and international visitors, was officially brought under the Bihar State Fair Authority. To support sanitation workers, the cabinet sanctioned the formation of the Bihar State Safaikarmi Commission. This commission will work to mainstream sanitation workers and ensure their safety and rights. Furthermore, six new positions, including chairman and vice-chairman, were created for the Bihar Youth Commission. Addressing growing water scarcity, the cabinet approved surface water supply schemes in Supaul and Kaimur districts. In Chhatapur block (Supaul), two pumping systems with a combined capacity of 31 million litres per day (MLD) will draw water from the Sursar river to serve 318 wards in 63 villages. The project, which includes five years of maintenance, will cost Rs 320 crore. In Kaimur's Aghora block, a 7.85 MLD tube well drawing from the Sone river will supply drinking water to 41 wards across seven panchayats. The total expenditure, including seven years of maintenance, is estimated at Rs 293 crore. The need for these schemes was raised during the CM's Pragati Yatra. The cabinet also approved Rs 270 crore for installing electric fittings in classrooms and facilities across primary schools under the state's ongoing school renovation programme. The work will begin this fiscal and conclude by 2026-27. An additional Rs 276 crore was cleared for the renovation of secondary and higher secondary schools. In another major decision, the cabinet sanctioned Rs 180 crore for constructing godowns with a total capacity of 2.49 lakh metric tonnes through primary agricultural credit societies (PACS). Proposed by the cooperative department, the scheme includes 50% subsidy support and the remainder as a revolving fund, repayable through profits. The godowns will be of 200, 500 and 1,000MT capacities. To improve urban mobility in Saran district, Rs 696 crore was allocated to the road construction department for building a flyover from Gandhi Chowk to Nagarpalika Chowk in Chhapra town. The project is aimed at eliminating chronic traffic congestion and ease movement. Finally, the cabinet approved a revised estimate of Rs 1,121 crore for civil and electrical works at the State Sports Academy and International Cricket Stadium in Rajgir, Nalanda district, further boosting Bihar's sports infrastructure.
