As of 12:17 p.m., Alphabet Inc.'s Class C stock was trading at $151.41, marking a sharp decline of $13.79 or 8.35% for the day.
At the heart of the market reaction was testimony by Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of services, who told a Washington court that Google's search traffic on Apple products declined last month. Cue attributed the drop to growing competition from AI-powered search alternatives such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, signalling a potential shift in user behaviour away from traditional search engines.
Meanwhile, Google disclosed it has identified a new strain of malware dubbed 'LOSTKEYS,' linked to the Russia-based hacking group Cold River. According to Wesley Shields of the Google Threat Intelligence Group, the malware is capable of stealing files and transmitting system information to attackers. Shields noted that LOSTKEYS represents a new advancement in Cold River's arsenal.
Cold River, which has ties to Russia's Federal Security Service, has been associated with numerous cyber campaigns targeting high-profile Western individuals and organizations, including NATO governments, NGOs, former intelligence officers, and individuals with connections to Ukraine.
Recent activity from the group was observed as recently as January, March, and April 2025. A notable past operation included the targeting of U.S.
nuclear research labs in 2022 and the leak of private emails from former British intelligence chief Richard Dearlove.
Meanwhile, Google announced a major partnership with nuclear developer Elementl Power to construct three advanced nuclear power plants in the United States.

Each facility is expected to produce at least 600 megawatts of electricity—enough to power a large-scale data center—as tech companies scramble to meet the surging energy demands brought on by the generative AI boom.
Google will provide early-stage capital for the projects, which will be developed in collaboration with utility and regulatory partners to secure appropriate locations. Amanda Peterson Corio, Google's Global Head of Data Center Energy, said the initiative reinforces the company's goal of strengthening the energy grid. She emphasized that advanced nuclear energy offers 'reliable, baseload, 24/7 energy' crucial for supporting AI and innovation.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that electricity usage by data centres will more than double by 2030, posing significant challenges to power infrastructure—challenges this partnership seeks to address.

Trump, Musk and a split foretold
It has been less than six months (of a 48-month tenure) since Donald J Trump assumed the office of the President of the United States for a second time. In that time, he has upended the US's relationship with its Western allies and engaged in a start-stop tariff regime based on questionable assumptions. He has also injected elements of uncertainty into the US's ties with countries, including India, that have been growing and deepening steadily for nearly three decades. The public spat between President Trump and Elon Musk — beyond the barbs and the almost reality TV style of the 'breakup' — must be seen in this context. Drama and uncertainty mark both US domestic politics and how the superpower engages with the world. The world's richest man played a significant part in the Trump campaign and the administration. Musk contributed about $250 million to Trump's election fund and, after the election, led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The differences over the Trump administration's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', emerging a day after Musk left DOGE, quickly spiralled into an all-out social-media war between the two billionaires, replete with name-calling. While Musk claimed that he won Trump the election and echoed conspiracy theories about his connections with deceased financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the President raised questions about government contracts for the Tesla and SpaceX founder's companies. Given their egos, perhaps it was a split foretold. That said, the Trump-Musk spat sends out the message that it is not necessarily institutions and interests that determine the course of politics and policy in Washington. Till recently, the 'bromance' between the two men made Musk's companies all but de facto national champions and the tech entrepreneur was seen across capitals as an extension of the White House. SpaceX, for example, has deep ties to NASA and its vessels ferry US astronauts to the International Space Station. The uncertainty around the future of that collaboration will make things more complicated for Delhi as it tries to deepen cooperation in space with the US. Deals with Tesla and Starlink, while made by private players, may take on a different colour. The Trump administration's domestic policies have already had reverberations in India, especially its attitude to visas for foreign students and workers. The immature insistence that the White House mediated the ceasefire after Operation Sindoor went against the grain of 30 years of the bilateral relationship — through Republican and Democrat administrations — of de-hyphenating India and Pakistan. As India tries to manage the US relationship over the next three years, it must keep in mind that it is working with a partner that is much more temperamental — today's Trump loyalist might be tomorrow's persona non grata.

Musk calls for impeachment of Trump
Washington: Amid the brewing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the tech billionaire called for the impeachment of the Republican firebrand. He went ahead, saying US Vice President JD Vance should replace Trump in the Oval Office, leaving many shocked. Musk's remarks came in response to an X post demanding the impeachment of the 47th President of the United States. 'President vs Elon. Who wins? My money's on Elon." 'Trump should be impeached, and JD Vance should replace him,' Ian Miles Cheong, a Malaysia-based right-wing writer, said in a post on Thursday afternoon. 'Yes,' Musk said in response to Cheong's post about 20 minutes later. The brief friendship between Musk and Trump nose-dived into an abyss due to a disagreement over Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill', which pushes for tax cuts and other spending measures. Things escalated quickly after Musk claimed that Trump is part of the Epstein Files, calling it the reason why it is not being fully released. While speaking to reporters at the Oval Office, Trump narrated the downfall of his and Musk's friendship, with many calling it a therapy session rather than a meeting with a foreign leader. He recalled Musk's farewell press conference and mentioned how the billionaire stood next to the President with a black eye. 'You saw a man who was very happy when he stood behind the Oval desk, and even with the black eye. I said, You want a little makeup? We'll get you a little makeup,' Trump said. 'But he said, 'No, I don't think so,' which is interesting and very nice. He wants to be who he is.' Interestingly, at that time, Musk was facing reports of drug use during his time as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump also mentioned that he could understand why Musk was upset with some steps he had taken, including withdrawing a nominee to lead the NASA space agency who was supported by the tech tycoon. The POTUS was narrating this saga while sitting in front of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had no other option but to sit silently through it all. At the heart of the Trump-Musk feud is the 'big, beautiful bill' on tax and spending. The centrepiece of his domestic agenda, it aims to continue tax cuts from his first term and is being touted as the make-or-break bill for Republican prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. Musk slammed the bill, calling it a 'disgusting abomination' on Tuesday, because it will increase the US deficit. A day later, the magnate called for Republicans to 'kill the bill,' and for an alternative plan that 'doesn't massively grow the deficit.'
