"I've never seen a man take something so personal" - Magic Johnson on what pushed Michael Jordan's buttons during famous Dream Team practice
"I've never seen a man take something so personal" - Magic Johnson on what pushed Michael Jordan's buttons during famous Dream Team practice originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Before the gold medals, before Barcelona, before they stepped onto the Olympic floor as giants among men, the real drama happened in a closed gym.

The greatest collection of basketball talent the world had ever seen — the 1992 Dream Team — was about global dominance. It was about hierarchy. Pride. Power. And, on one unforgettable day, the winds shifted.
Inside that high-stakes practice, East versus West, legends squared off. Magic Johnson, still the voice of the league, led one side. On the other stood Michael Jordan. Younger, hungrier, already crowned but still chasing the mountaintop.
The air crackled with tension. And then it snapped.
The day Jordan took it personal
Magic's team came out gunning. Fast breaks. Ball movement. Confidence. They ran the floor with the kind of joy that comes before the storm. As their lead swelled, he turned to the one man he knew wouldn't let it slide.

He poked the bear.
"I've never seen a man take something so personal and then go out there and take that scrimmage over," Johnson said, on what prompted Jordan's competitiveness to stir. "It was amazing to see him come out and just dominate. And I'm just talking about dominate the best in the game."
That was the moment. Not a game-winner. Not a Finals performance. A scrimmage, closed off from the world, with no cameras and no crowds. But that was where the line was drawn.
Jordan flipped a switch, he detonated. Possession after possession, he took over. Jumper, layup, steal, dunk. Yes, it wasn't the points that stunned the gym, but the silence afterward felt louder. Even the trash talkers fell quiet. The mood shifted.

Everyone in that gym could feel it. The old kings had just been dethroned.
Jordan wasn't chasing Magic or Bird anymore. He wasn't trying to prove he belonged in their orbit. At the time, he was already a two-time NBA champion with six straight scoring titles and three MVP awards. But that moment in Monte Carlo was about a message.
He didn't ask for the throne. He walked in and took it.
The mood back at the hotel was lighter, but the message still hung heavy. Jordan didn't let it fade. He walked up to Bird and Magic with that familiar smirk — half-serious, half-serrated — and dropped the line that would echo through basketball history.

There's a new sheriff in town
That wasn't bravado. That was the final seal. A verbal stamp on a symbolic passing of power. Magic felt it immediately.
"When we knew that the torch was been passed from myself and Larry unto Michael," Johnson said.
For Bird, who had led the Celtics to three titles and won three MVP awards while redefining what forward play looked like, the transition was clear. He ruled the '80s alongside Johnson, their rivalry the lifeblood of the NBA's rebirth. But Jordan wasn't cut from their cloth. He was something else entirely. He was cut sharper.

Magic had owned the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers. Five titles, three MVP awards and a smile that could melt a defense. But even he could admit: Jordan was inevitable.
That Dream Team would steamroll through the Olympics with an 8-0 record and a gold medal that never felt in doubt. But the real legacy wasn't what they did to Croatia.
It was what happened behind the curtain. That Monte Carlo scrimmage was the changing of the guard when basketball's past handed the keys to its future.
Jordan didn't ask for permission. He made his case on the court, in a room full of legends. Then he looked the legends in the eye and told them what time it was.

And they believed him.

Seattle fills out forward group, while Vancouver emphasizes defense following PWHL expansion draft
PWHL Seattle GM Meghan Turner can already envision having her top two lines in place with a group of forwards led by Hilary Knight. In Vancouver, general manager Cara Gardner Morey's emphasis was defense first. The league's two newest teams took distinct approaches in continuing to build their respective identities during the league's seven-round expansion draft on Monday night. The draft followed the PWHL's five-day exclusive signing period in which both teams signed their allowed maximum of five players. Though Vancouver used five of its seven selections on forwards, Gardner Morey opened the draft by choosing Ottawa defenseman Ashton Bell with the No. 1 pick. Bell and Boston's Sydney Bard, selected 13th on Monday, join a talented blueline that already includes the former Minnesota tandem of Claire Thompson and Sophie Jaques, who signed with Vancouver last week. 'I was a defender and I really think it's such a valuable position, and finding the right D and having a great core, one through eight even, is what makes championship teams,' said Gardner Morey, who is also set in net with the signing of Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer. In Seattle, Turner used the No. 2 pick on selecting Ottawa defenseman Aneta Tejralová. She then chose forwards with Seattle's next three selections in picking Boston's Hannah Bilka, New York's Jessie Eldridge and Toronto's Julia Gosling. The trio join a forward group that already features Knight, Alex Carpenter and Danielle Serdachny, who were signed last week. Seattle's initial 12-player roster features a mix of leadership in veterans Knight and Carpenter and emerging youth with four of six players selected in the first round of last year's draft in Serdachny (selected second), Bilka (fourth), defenseman Cayla Barnes (fifth) and Gosling (sixth). 'I'm really excited for these younger players to be able to learn from truly some of the best in the game in terms of Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight,' Turner said of the two long-time U.S. national team stars. 'I don't know if I was specifically forward-minded, but it's hard to pass up the three that I did sign.' Both expansion franchises are working under the same salary-cap restrictions as the league's other six teams, though the PWHL does not reveal player salaries. And both enjoy an advantageous head start with the league limiting existing teams to initially protecting only three players, before allowed to add a fourth player to the list after a team loses two from its roster. Each of the existing teams lost four players apiece, with the rules favoring the expansion teams by allowing them to be competitive from the start of the PWHL's third season, expected to open in November. Seattle's lineup features plenty of offense. Knight, a four-time Olympian, is an PWHL MVP finalist this year after finishing tied for the league lead with 29 points. Carpenter was an MVP finalist in 2024, when she finished tied for second with 23 points. And Eldridge, this season, finished tied for fifth in the league with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). Vancouver earned the first pick after winning a ball drawing. Both teams then alternated in having two picks each before Seattle closed the draft by selecting Boston defenseman Emily Brown 14th. Turner split her picks in selecting three forwards and four defensemen, rounded out by Montreal's Anna Wilgren and Toronto's Megan Carter. Vancouver chose two defenseman and five forwards, including Toronto's Izzy Daniel, who closed her senior season at Cornell in being selected the 2024 Patty Kazmaier award winner as women's hockey MVP. Daniel joins former Toronto teammate Sarah Nurse, who signed with Vancouver last week. Joining Thompson and Jaques in Vancouver are two more members of the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in forwards Brooke McQuigge and Denisa Krizova. Vancouver also drafted Montreal forward Abby Boreen and New York forward Gabby Rosenthal. Next up for the expansion teams is joining the rest of the league in the free-agent signing period that opens on Monday followed by the six-round PWHL draft on June 24 in Ottawa. ___ AP women's hockey:

Rivals Camp Series: The five best QBs of the 2025 regionals
Editor's Note: This article first appeared on the leader in college football and basketball recruiting coverage. Be the first to know and follow your teams by signing up here. The regional stops of the Rivals Camp Series is in the books with the Rivals Five-Star at the Indianapolis Colts' practice facility coming up later this month. Today, we look at the best players at each position through the regional events starting with quarterback. RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Houston showed in Dallas that he has all the traits of an elite quarterback and it's why USC has made him its top priority in the 2027 class and many others, including Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU, are staying involved. The Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian high four-star is not the biggest quarterback in the world but that's what everyone said about Kyler Murray, Bryce Young and so many others. In today's game, quarterback height is less important than ever before. Houston is a playmaker and even if a camp setting isn't the best for him, the four-star still delivered in a major way. Over the last few days, Jarrard has visited Purdue, Notre Dame and Clemson and heading into the Atlanta camp he had received offers from Georgia and Ohio State as the 2027 four-star from Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the entire country. The ball pops off Jarrard's hand. He has velocity, timing and everything else to back up all the attention he's received on the recruiting trail. The Atlanta Camp was loaded at quarterback and even though Jarrard didn't win the MVP award, he was definitely impressive and one of the best QBs at any Rivals regional camp. To beat out Teddy Jarrard, North Carolina commit Travis Burgess, Mississippi State pledge Brodie McWhorter and others for the MVP award, Johnson had a phenomenal performance at the Atlanta camp which was one of many this offseason. The 2027 four-star quarterback from Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes was sharp, showed off great arm talent, had a clean motion throughout the event and then seemed to get better and better throughout the camp. It was a close race at the top but Johnson edged out some other elite quarterbacks. The five-star quarterback was fantastic as always at the Los Angeles stop and what's even more impressive is that a camp setting is not where Lyons does his best work. The Folsom, Calif., standout sat in the pocket and zipped passes all over the field. He knows when to dial it back a little bit and has such an unreal feel for receivers and immediately having chemistry with them. Lyons is best when he can freelance a little bit, escape pressure and make magic happen and that's not a camp setting but he was still great. Oregon, BYU, Michigan and others continue after him. It's hard to believe that Wade is a 2028 prospect because he has all the tools and is physically developed enough that it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if he reclassified because he doesn't need three more high school seasons. He's now the guy at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and he should shine because he is a special prospect who will clearly be under five-star consideration. Wade was arguably the best quarterback at the loaded Los Angeles event, which is always so deep at the position. Even still, the 2028 prospect stood out. He has the total package from decision-making to arm talent and beyond. Oregon, Texas and others have already made an impression.
