McDonald's global sales top estimates as affordable meal options boost demand

[CHICAGO] McDonald's global comparable sales beat Wall Street expectations for second quarter, as affordable meal bundles and promotions drew in budget-conscious diners looking to stretch their US dollars amid persistent economic uncertainty.
Strong demand in the US and international markets powered a 3.8 per cent rise in global same-store sales, above expectations of a 2.4 per cent rise, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Shares of the Chicago, Illinois-based company rose about 3 per cent in premarket trading.
Fast-food chains have seen competition heat up as companies such as McDonald's, Domino's Pizza and Taco Bell owner Yum Brands double down on value meals to counter a slowdown in demand, mainly among the lower-income households.
To improve sales, McDonald's launched a limited-time Happy Meal offer for kids and adults tied to the 'Minecraft' Movie promotion in April. In May, it introduced McCrispy Chicken Strips as a permanent menu item.
These promotions are in addition to the US$5 meal deal and the buy-one, add-one for US$1 offers launched last year.

Menu innovation and promotions had also helped Domino's report upbeat US same-store sales, while weakening demand hurt sales at Yum Brands and Chipotle Mexican Grill.
For the second quarter, McDonald's outperformed the wider quick-service restaurant category, with visits rising 0.8 per cent from a year ago and compared to a 0.7 per cent dip in the QSR space, data from foot traffic tracking firm Placer.ai showed.
The launch of Snack Wraps on July 10 boosted visits to US stores at the start of the third quarter, Placer.ai analyst RJ Hottovy said.
Comparable sales in US, McDonald's biggest market, grew 2.5 per cent, compared with a 0.7 per cent decline a year ago.
Sales in its business segment where restaurants are operated by local partners, jumped 5.6 per cent, led by Japan, while international markets sales rose 4 per cent, owing to a demand recovery in the UK, Canada and France.
Adjusted net income came in at US$2.29 billion, or US$3.19 per share, up 7 per cent from a year ago. REUTERS

Singapore's KPB Biosciences fails in bid to unfreeze assets in US$830 million Novo Nordisk legal battle

[SINGAPORE] Locally headquartered biotech firm KPB Biosciences has failed to set aside a court order for its assets to be frozen, with the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) having dismissed its application on Tuesday (Aug 12). The worldwide freezing order had been obtained by Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk, which is claiming up to S$830 million in damages from KPB, over allegations that the Singapore-based biotech firm had misled it about a drug for hypertension and kidney disease. Novo Nordisk had acquired the drug from KBP in late 2023 in a deal worth up to US$1.3 billion. But less than a year later, the pharmaceutical giant halted clinical trials because the treatment was proven to be ineffective. Novo Nordisk, best known for Ozempic, the blockbuster diabetes drug, subsequently announced an impairment loss of around US$800 million. In February, Judge Philip Jeyaretnam granted the worldwide freezing order in support of the suit, which is being arbitrated in New York. The judge determined there was a real risk that KBP would place its assets beyond Novo's legal reach. Transfers of US$339.1 million from KBP to its holding company, as well as US$578.5 million paid out in dividends, indicate that its founder, Huang Zhenhua, had the intention of moving assets out of Novo's reach in anticipation of a claim, he said. Sign Up Sign Up The freeze encompasses KBP's Singapore-based assets, which include the company's DBS fixed deposit account containing US$218 million as of Dec 31, 2023, and Huang's Sennett Estate property, valued at US$7 million at purchase. The case at hand KPB had sought to set aside the freeze order on four main grounds: It argued that Novo lacked a strong legal case, and that there was no real risk of asset misuse; it further argued that Novo had failed to provide full and frank disclosure of the freeze order. The company's lawyers also contended that the application did not satisfy the legal requirements under Section 12A of the International Arbitration Act 1994, which allows the Court to grant interim measures supporting international arbitration proceedings. But in his judgement, Judge Jeyaratnam found that Novo had a good arguable case, as the evidence sufficiently established that both KBP and Huang had misled it on the efficacy of its kidney-disease drug. He also ruled that the risk that KBP and Huang would move the assets out of Novo's reach was real. The monies Huang received have remained in his personal bank accounts. But when viewed in the context of Novo's lawsuit against KBP, these funds were found to have passed through multiple intermediaries before reaching him. The evidence thus suggested that Huang had expected Novo to file claims against KBP, but not against him personally. As for whether Novo's application fulfilled Section 12A, the judge said the requirements were established as the emergency arbitrator could not grant the freezing order, which was sought without notifying the other party to prevent asset transfers. For these and other reasons, the Court declined to set aside the freeze order. Who is KBP's founder Huang Zhenhua? The native of Shandong, China, now a Singaporean citizen, has been described in the media as a 'serial entrepreneur', with more than 20 years' experience in drug research and development. After earning his PhD from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, he founded Xuanzhu Biopharm in 2002. A decade later, he sold it to Sihuan Pharmaceutical Holdings. He served as executive director and shareholder at Sihuan before it delisted from the SGX in 2009 and then relisted in Hong Kong the following year. Huang established KBP in 2011 in Shandong. Court documents show he owns a 40 per cent stake in the company, now incorporated in Singapore, with its global headquarters in International Plaza on Anson Road, and its operations in China and the US.

ComfortDelGro's H1 2025 earnings rise 11.2% to S$106 million

[SINGAPORE] Transport operator ComfortDelGro (CDG) reported on Wednesday (Aug 13) an 11.2 per cent increase in earnings for the first half of 2025 to S$106 million, from S$95.3 million in the year-ago period. Revenue for the period rose 14.4 per cent to S$2.4 billion, from S$2.1 billion in the year prior, due to contributions from its overseas revenue, which contributed more than half of its total revenue for the first time. Overseas revenue contributions, which amounted to S$1.3 billion, increased to 54.3 per cent of the overall revenue, up from 46.3 per cent in the year-ago period. Full-year contributions from its acquisitions of UK private-hire service Addison Lee, UK-based ground transport management specialist CMAC, and Australian taxi network A2B in 2024 helped boost CDG's overseas operating profit by 67.8 per cent compared with a year ago. Revenue from Singapore, on the other hand, dipped slightly by 2.6 per cent to S$1.1 billion over the same period. Sign Up Sign Up Revenue from the public-transport business rose 29.6 per cent to S$1.6 billion in H1 2025, from S$1.5 billion in H1 2024, due to increased revenues from renewals of its UK bus contract at improved margins, as well as the commencement of its four bus franchises in Greater Manchester. For its taxi and private-hire segment, revenue rose to S$519.7 million, rising 58.7 per cent from S$327.5 million a year ago. However, operating costs for this segment also increased by 67.5 per cent – from S$265.9 million in H1 2024 to S$445.4 million in H1 2025. As for its other private-transport segment, revenue for H1 stood at S$214.5 million, up 23.6 per cent, from S$173.5 million a year ago. Overall operating profit for H1 grew to S$172.5 million, or 22.8 per cent higher than S$140.5 million from a year ago. Cheng Siak Kian, the group chief executive officer of CDG, said that the increase in overseas earnings reflects CDG's focus on pursuing profitable international growth. 'The international public transport business continues to do well, underpinned by our ability to collaborate effectively with our clients to deliver valued services to support their transport goals,' he said. Outlook In terms of business outlook for Singapore, CDG said that rail revenue is projected to increase with a steady growth in ridership, although manpower costs are anticipated to rise in a tight labour market. As for its overseas markets, the company expects the renewal of its London public bus contracts to continue at improved margins. It also noted that the driver shortage in Australia is slowly reducing. 'Although the group has no direct exposure to recently introduced trade tariffs, with recent geopolitical and trade tensions, the group continues to monitor foreign exchange and interest rates closely and take appropriate measures as necessary while continuing to execute its strategy,' it added. An interim dividend of S$0.0391 per share was declared by the board, to be paid on Aug 28. Shares of CDG closed 0.6 per cent or S$0.01 higher at S$1.58 on Wednesday, before the announcement.
