Foreign investors infuse ₹3,346.94 cr in Indian markets this week, but June still sees net outflow
New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pumped ₹ 3,346.94 crore into Indian stock markets this week, boosted by positive sentiment after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a rate cut, according to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).
The rate cut by the RBI supported investor confidence and led to strong FPI inflows for the first three trading sessions of the week from June 9 to June 13. However, geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran weighed on investor mood toward the end of the week.
On the last trading day of the week, Friday, FPIs pulled out a significant ₹ 3,275.76 crore from Indian equities. This large outflow reduced the net investment figure for the week to ₹ 3,346.94 crore.
In times of geopolitical tension, such as the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, investors tend to shift their money to safer assets like gold, which can reduce flows into emerging markets like India.
Despite the positive inflows during the week, the overall FPI investment trend for June remains negative. So far in June, FPIs have withdrawn ₹ 5,402 crore from Indian equity markets, as per NSDL data.
Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) on June 6th announced a surprise rate cut of 50 basis points. The repo rate was reduced to 5.5 per cent, which gave a strong push to investor confidence.
Earlier in May, the net foreign portfolio investment (FPI) inflows remained in positive and stood at ₹ 19,860 crore, making May the best-performing month so far this year in terms of foreign investment.
In previous months' data also showed that FPIs had sold stocks worth ₹ 3,973 crore in March. In January and February, they had sold equities worth ₹ 78,027 crore and ₹ 34,574 crore, respectively. (ANI)

5 foreign universities awarded LOIs to start campuses in Navi Mumbai; fees 25% lower than overseas
Mumbai: Five foreign universities that were awarded letters of intent (LOIs) to set up full-fledged campuses in Navi Mumbai will offer courses at fees at least 25-30% lower than what students currently pay to study abroad, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced at an event on Saturday. The idea is to make foreign education both accessible and affordable to Indian students, he added. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who was also in Mumbai for the event, said including the five in Navi Mumbai, nine foreign universities have already been given permission to start operations in the country, and six more are in the pipeline. Two have already started offering their programmes in Gujarat's Gift City, he added. The University of Aberdeen (UK), the University of York (UK), the University of Western Australia, the Illinois Institute of Technology (US), and the Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy) were granted the LOIs under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, at the 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' event held in Colaba on Saturday. Officials said the five universities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have been given an 18-month window to start operations in the country and will enjoy full autonomy in deciding the programmes, the academic session, curriculum, fees, among other things. These will be open to international students as well. Fadnavis said the entry of the five foreign universities will launch the state's dream of making Mumbai and Maharashtra an international education hub. The idea is to host at least 10 leading international universities in the Education City, he said, adding talks are on with a few more universities. These foreign institutions will not only make global education affordable for Indian students, but also help in creating a global workforce, he said. Fadnavis added the state will only be facilitating the universities' plans to set up campuses but will not bear any financial responsibility. The foreign universities will not be following any constitutional reservations, and scholarship policies will be as per their individual policies, said the CM. Other state universities will be free to collaborate with these universities to offer joint programmes. For instance, said Fadnavis, Gondwana University in Gadchiroli, which is setting up a mining hub, has already collaborated with an Australian university and will be using their expertise in mining. The 250-acre EduCity, being developed by Cidco, is within a five-km radius of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, and this region will soon also be developed as a medicity, a sports city, and a yet-to-be-announced innovation city – a one-of-its-kind innovation ecosystem in the country. Pradhan said that NEP will allow global institutions to establish branches in India and Indian institutions to open campuses abroad. He spoke about Indian universities setting up campuses abroad, including IIT-Madras (in Zanzibar), IIT-Delhi (in Abu Dhabi), and IIM-Ahmedabad (in Dubai). The entry of foreign universities will accelerate India's progress in education and development, he added. Vineet Joshi, acting chairman of UGC, Cidco MD Vijay Singhal, were present at the event along with Consul Generals from respective countries and academic officials from the five foreign universities. Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): Stressing that the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), envisions India as a global study destination, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Saturday, emphasised that with this initiative, they aim to realise the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to position India as a global knowledge hub. The Ministry of Education has taken a major step towards realising the goals of internationalisation of education as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In a ceremonial event titled 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' held in Mumbai today, Letters of Intent (LoIs) were issued to five globally reputed universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States of America and Italy. The establishment of the branch campuses of University of York, University of Aberdeen, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology and Instituto Europeo Di Design (IED), Italy, reflects a deep and growing trust in India's education ecosystem and is a major milestone as we mark five transformative years of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that NEP 2020 envisions India as a global study destination, offering premium education at an affordable cost. He added that with this initiative, we aim to realise the Prime Minister's vision of positioning India as a global knowledge hub. 'India is encouraging top international universities to establish campuses here, while empowering Indian Higher education institutions to expand globally,' he said. Union Minister Pradhan further added that this initiative reflects a growing two-way movement of ideas, talent and trust. He further said that we are not just inviting foreign universities; we are co-creating ecosystems of innovation, entrepreneurship and research. 'As we mark five years of implementing the NEP 2020, this milestone exemplifies the spirit of Sankalp se Siddhi, the journey from resolution to realisation. It strengthens our shared goal of empowering youth and enabling innovation-led growth through education leading to Viksit Bharat,' the Union Minister said. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the swift issuance of LoIs reflects the speed and commitment of the Government. He thanked the PM for NEP 2020, which has a provision for foreign universities to be a part of the Indian education sector. The five universities, he noted, have added immense value to the State and NEP 2020 has truly opened doors for top global institutions to establish campuses in India. He further stated that talented Indian students who faced accessibility and affordability issues in pursuing foreign education can now do so in India at reduced costs. 'The Government aims to make accessible, global quality education across various domains and further talks are ongoing with 5 more universities,' Fadnavis stated. The LoIs handed over today allow the universities to establish their offshore branch campus in India. All five universities from UK, USA, Australia and Italy, receiving the LoIs are ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings, signifying strong global academic credibility. The University of Western Australia will establish two campuses, one each in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai and Chennai, reflecting the growing confidence of top institutions in India's regulatory and academic landscape. This is the first-time foreign universities will establish a presence in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, with some expected to set up campuses in the upcoming Education City in Navi Mumbai under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. The establishment of these university campuses in India will be beneficial for students, in terms of extending global course curriculum and study opportunities in India and for research, knowledge exchange, enterprise and engagement. Courses at the Mumbai/Navi Mumbai/Chennai campus will be offered at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in areas such as business, economics, computer science, public health, data science, design, and more. These are the disciplines that will drive India's development in the years ahead and shape the workforce of a 'Viksit Bharat.'
