King urges Lionesses to target World Cup glory after ‘great pride' of Euros win

The Prince of Wales was spotted in the stands applauding and celebrating with those around him – including his daughter Princess Charlotte.
William was among those to heap praise on striker Michelle Agyemang, who was named young player of the tournament.
As the presentation ceremony took place, William exchanged words with Agyemang, appearing to say, 'Well played, fantastic, well done'.
William later wrote on X: 'What a game! @lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team.
'Enjoy this moment @england. W & Charlotte.'

Sir Keir Starmer also offered his congratulations after England's victory in Switzerland.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: 'Champions! Congratulations @Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama.
'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.'
Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: 'What an absolutely extraordinary achievement by our Lionesses – once again they have made history and united the country with pride and joy.
'The Lionesses have not just won a tournament – they have inspired millions with their skill, determination and heart. Huge congratulations to Sarina Wiegman, her brilliant squad, and everyone who has supported them on this incredible journey.'
Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham paid tribute to the Lionesses' creating English football history and said a victory parade in London on Tuesday would 'give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players'.
He said: 'Our history-making Lionesses are champions of Europe for the second successive time, and have become the first England Senior team in history to win a tournament overseas.
'We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement.
'They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history.
'We've had amazing support from our fans both in Switzerland and at home throughout the tournament, and we look forward to celebrating together and creating some lifelong memories.'

He's won 26 major honours at Parkhead and picked up 39 caps for his country to date James Forrest insists he'll never close the door on playing for Scotland and the chance to fulfil his World Cup dream. Celtic's most decorated servant has done almost all there is to do in the game having lifted an astonishing 26 major honours at Parkhead. Capped 39 times for his country, he was also named in both of Steve Clarke's Scotland squads for the European Championships in 2021 and 2024. One of the few achievements still to be ticked off the 34-year-old's bucket list, however, is a World Cup appearance. Clarke's team will kick off their bid to reach next summer's North American finals when they face both Denmark and Belarus in next month's double header. And while it's now 14 months since his last international appearance, Forrest is refusing to rule out playing a part this time round. He said: "I spoke to Steve Clarke a couple of times at the start of last season but then I got a really bad injury in December which kept me out for a few months. 'But the main thing for me has always been making sure I'm playing well for Celtic and then if Scotland comes along, great. 'But no, I've not spoken to Steve this season. I just want to do well for Celtic in the games coming up and then we'll just kind of see from there. 'When I had the conversation with Steve last year, it was a good one. It was after I'd gone to the Euros and didn't play. He said if he needed me, then he'd give me the call and it was just kind of left like that. 'So as I said, it's always kind of open and I would never shut the door." Next year's World Cup will be the biggest football extravaganza FIFA have ever thrown after expanding the tournament to 48 teams. And Forrest would hate to miss out. "I think as with any player, you want to play in the top competitions,' he said. 'You want to play Champions League, you want to play for your national team. 'Obviously I've done a lot of stuff already in my career. 'But the World Cup is at the end of the season, there's qualifiers and that as well, so I don't want to think too far." But Forrest believes he can still make a major contribution for club and country, even though he's now reached veteran territory. He said: 'The sports scientists, the manager, they look at training every day and see that when I come on at the weekend, I made a contribution. I want to keep performing for Celtic and I think I can keep offering that." Forrest missed out on what would have been a 27th winners' medal in May when Aberdeen crashed the Hoops Treble party to snatch the Scottish Cup. But Forrest insists revenge won't be on his mind as the Premiership and League Cup winners head to Pittodrie this weekend. 'The cup final was hard. I've had a couple of those disappointments at the start of my career but then we went on to have a really good spell. 'It shows you how well all the different teams over the years have done, winning and being so successful. 'But Aberdeen are one of the best teams in Scotland and I think every time you play them, there's a rivalry there anyway. 'You go to Pittodrie and we all know it's a hard game, so I don't think we'll look much into the cup final. 'It's a new season and we want to get off to a good start and just keep the momentum going, and hopefully get another three points."

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig with Rasmus Hojlund's future increasingly uncertain as a result Rasmus Hojlund has 'liked' a post confirming Manchester United's agreement to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian has been at the centre of a rollercoaster transfer saga, but he is now set to sign for the Red Devils after snubbing Newcastle's more lucrative offer. Ruben Amorim is now nearing his third significant summer signing, with Sesko now in Manchester to complete his medical and sign his contract. The Athletic reports that a deal worth €75.6million (£65.5m), plus €8.5m (£7.4m) in add-ons, has been agreed to strengthen United's attacking line-up. Steve Tandy: 'There's no magic wand or quick fix – but I believe in Welsh talent'
New head coach Steve Tandy says Wales must show ambition to restore national pride after sliding down the world order. Tonmawr-born Tandy, a former Ospreys player and coach, has ended a six-year stay as Scotland defence coach to return home to Wales. Tandy becomes the first Welshman to coach the national side since 2007, at a time when Wales have slipped to 12th in the world rankings and had lost 17 successive matches before beating Japan last month in the final game of Matt Sherratt's interim reign. 'The privilege and the honour to be head coach of your national country is massive,' Tandy said. 'Being in the changing rooms is even better. I've got huge pride as a sense of family and what a great rugby nation it is. 'So, it's a feeling of absolute pride and an honour.' Wales were 2019 World Cup semi-finalists under Warren Gatland and Wayne Pivac's side won the 2021 Six Nations Championship. But Pivac's reign quickly unravelled and Gatland's return – the Kiwi had overseen a glorious chapter between 2007 and 2019 – produced no upturn in fortunes, with his departure coming during the 2025 Six Nations in February. The Welsh Rugby Union has stated it wants to see Wales in the top five in the world by 2029. But is that a realistic target given the problems facing the Welsh game at a time when four regions could be cut to two and the talent pool is shallow compared to rival nations? Tandy said: 'I believe in the talent we have in Wales, to get us to where we want to go. 'There's not going to be a magic wand or a quick fix and then it all changes, but I do believe in the pathway. 'Ultimately you want to have ambition. We want to have ambition to meet those targets, but ultimately there's a process to get to that as well. 'We have to build performances incrementally. From campaign to campaign we have to be better and looking at how we can build that performance through the exciting group we've got.' Tandy won the Pro12 competition in six years at Ospreys but left the Welsh region in 2018. He worked for NSW Waratahs in Australia before moving to Scotland, while Gatland made him defence coach on the British and Irish Lions' 2021 tour of South Africa. 'The one thing that has really driven me from the start is I want to be the best person and the best coach I can possibly be,' Tandy said. 'Did I ever think I'd be a Lions coach? No. Did I ever think I'd coach the Waratahs? No. 'But I think it's surprising what happens when you have the mindset to be better and to understand as well you have got blind spots and you have got things to work on.' Tandy takes up his role on September 1 and will prepare for autumn home games against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. He will shape his backroom team along with WRU performance director Dave Reddin, saying there is a 'blank canvas' after Gethin Jenkins (defence), Danny Wilson (forwards), Adam Jones (scrum), Rhys Thomas (assistant forwards coach) and Leigh Halfpenny (kicking) assisted Sherratt in Japan.
