Reds Lead MLB in Hitting With Runners in Scoring Position
So far in 2025, the Cincinnati Reds have had the most puzzling offense in baseball. The 24 runs scored this past weekend against the Baltimore Orioles have made many forget the team was shut out for three straight days. The inconsistencies at the plate have made for the offense being one of the most unpredictable in baseball, yet, if there is one thing for certain every game, it is that the Reds will hit once runners are halfway to home base.
23 games into their season, the Reds lead the MLB with a .315 batting average with runners in scoring position. The next closest average is .281, leaving no doubt Cincinnati's lineup has featured the most clutch hitting in the young 2025 season. It is also worth noting that the Reds even held this title before their 24-run outburst.

Now tied for the third-most runs scored in baseball this season with 120, the Reds have only gotten stronger. Veteran Austin Hays has returned healthy to the lineup after missing the first couple of weeks and has been on base in 15 of 32 at-bats. Leadoff hitter TJ Friedl has emerged following a slow start and is batting .350 with runners in scoring position.

The spark of it all is none other than Elly De La Cruz, who is off to an amazing start once his teammates get on base. In 31 at-bats with runners halfway to home plate, De La Cruz has nine hits, three home runs, three walks, and a .290 batting average. Currently, De La Cruz has 19 runs batted in with runners in scoring position, 10 more than the next Red, Austin Wynns.
Will the team continue to hit over .300 the rest of 2025 with runners at second and/or third? Probably not, as it has only been a 23-game sample size within a 162-game season. Nonetheless, it is hard not to be optimistic about the Reds long-term if the offense continues to produce runs once in scoring position, combined with their top-five pitching staff.

Blue Jays put Anthony Santander on 10-day IL with left shoulder inflammation, recall Alan Roden
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays put slugger Anthony Santander on the 10-day injured list Friday because of left shoulder inflammation and recalled outfielder Alan Roden from Triple-A Buffalo. Santander is batting .179 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 50 games. The veteran switch hitter has missed a handful of games because of left hip and left shoulder soreness over the past three weeks. Advertisement Santander signed a $92.5 million, five-year contract with Toronto in January after eight seasons with Baltimore. He hit a career-best 44 home runs for the Orioles last season. The outfielder had an MRI after Thursday's 12-0 win over the Athletics, when he was 0 for 2 with two strikeouts and two walks, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. The team was still determining whether the next steps would include a cortisone injection or rehabilitation, the manager said. 'I think it just got to the point to where it was bothering him,' Schneider said before Friday's game against the Athletics. 'You can't really put the work that you want to put in volume-wise, and we just think it's best for him right now.' Roden rejoins the Blue Jays after batting .178 with one home run and five RBIs in 28 games for Toronto earlier this season, his first in the majors. Roden hit .361 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 18 games at Buffalo after being sent down May 7. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle expected to miss 8-12 weeks with hamstring strain
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks with a right hamstring strain that has already landed him on the injured list. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Friday that an MRI revealed a Grade 2 strain. Mountcastle was injured May 30 in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox . 'It's incredibly disappointing,' Mansolino said. 'I feel for him, the group feels for him, but we've got to move forward. We've got some good players here that will step up and pick up the slack.' The Orioles got the news on Mountcastle before they had a season-best, six-game winning streak stopped in a 5-4 loss to the Athletics on Friday night. Mountcastle is hitting .246 with 13 doubles, two homers, 15 RBIs and a .628 OPS through 52 games. He was hitting .298 in May with seven hits in his previous 12 at-bats before the injury. Ryan O'Hearn and top prospect Coby Mayo will split time at first base. The 23-year-old Mayo appeared in his ninth game of the season on Friday after playing in 17 games while making his big league debut a year ago. ___ AP MLB:
