'Party' flat where suspected sex work took place shut down

BBC News04-07-2025
A holiday rental flat which was frequently used for late-night parties and suspected "drug activity" and sex work has been shut down by the council.A closure order was made to allow the leaseholder to "regain control" of the two-bedroom, first-floor apartment on City Road in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. The order means the flat will be closed to anyone but authorised personnel for three months, Trafford Council said. The local authority said the flat was the subject of complaints by nearby residents after it was used for months for parties, suspected sex work and "visits from masked individuals on electric bikes".
It said the flat was being sublet by a property firm using an online booking platform. This, the council said, was a breach of its lease. Councillor Rose Thompson, executive member for communities and safety, said: "No-one should have to put up with the levels of disruption and fear experienced by neighbours in this case."We will continue to do all we can to protect residents and uphold community safety."

Girl under 16 ‘sexually assaulted at city centre nightclub' as 18-year-old arrested

A GIRL under 16 has been "sexually assaulted" at a city centre nightclub. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of raping the girl at a nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham last Sunday. West Midlands Police have launched an urgent investigation into the assault. The man has since been released on bail while inquiries continue. The force said: "On Sunday, July 27, the venue was open and trading. 'During the nights trading a serious assault took place inside the venue. 'This matter is a serious crime by virtue of the sentence tariff for the offence alleged. 'West Midlands Police have serious concerns for the promotion of the licensing objectives at this premises. West Ham midfielder Paqueta cleared of alleged betting breaches by FA

LONDON, July 31 (Reuters) - West Ham United's Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of four alleged breaches of betting rules after an independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Football Association said on Thursday. Last year, the 27-year-old was charged with deliberately seeking to receive a booking during four Premier League games between November 2022 to August 2023 against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bournemouth. The FA said it was alleged that Paqueta sought to influence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in those matches by deliberately trying to get booked to manipulate the betting market for the benefit of others. "Paqueta denied the charges against him, and a Regulatory Commission found them to be not proven following a hearing," the FA said in a statement. The Brazilian has been charged with two breaches in relation to alleged failures to comply with his obligations to answer questions and provide information to the FA investigation. Paqueta, who was facing the risk of a lifetime ban, denied the alleged spot-fixing charges and expressed frustration over media coverage of the matter , which he said was misleading. "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations," Paqueta said in a statement on Thursday. "I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face. To my wife, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me, thank you." The FA began their investigation of the alleged betting breaches in August 2023. In October last year , Paqueta urged the FA to investigate how information from its case against him had been leaked to the media. "We are pleased Lucas has been cleared ... as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process," West Ham Vice-Chair Karren Brady said. "Despite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout." West Ham, who struggled to a disappointing 14th-place finish last season, begin their 2025–26 Premier League campaign at promoted Sunderland on August 16.

Peaceful protest outside Epping asylum hotel

A peaceful protest has taken place outside a hotel housing asylum seekers in Epping. Essex Police said a group of people protesting against The Bell Hotel in Epping formed at about 6pm on Thursday. Officers then facilitated a march in the town's High Street, by the same group, and no arrests were made. Multiple demonstrations have been held outside The Bell Hotel since July 13 after an asylum seeker was charged with allegedly attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl. Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, who was charged with sexual assault, denies the charges. He is due to stand trial in August. Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow said: 'The calm and peaceful nature of tonight's protest meant that we have not arrested anyone during the march, and I want to thank those who attended and made that possible. 'As a force, we will continue to facilitate the right to protest when it is both peaceful and lawful.' Police put a dispersal order in place ahead of the protest from 3pm on Thursday to 8am on Friday, giving officers the power to direct anyone suspected of committing anti-social behaviour to leave the area. A Section 60AA order, which prevents people from wearing face coverings, is also in place from 3pm on Thursday until 3pm on Friday. Essex Police previously said 14 people have been charged in connection with recent protests at the site and there have been 23 arrests. Concerns about the use of the Bell Hotel to house asylum seekers were expressed in an open letter sent to the Home Secretary from political leaders in Essex on Wednesday. In the letter, the politicians say housing migrants at the site is 'proving to be entirely unsuitable' and 'placing an unsustainable strain on police resources'. Protesters also gathered outside the Stanwell Hotel in Spelthorne, Surrey on Thursday. Spelthorne Borough Council previously said it had 'expressed strong opposition' to the Home Office's intention to change the client group at the hotel to provide only for male asylum seekers. In a letter to the Home Secretary, Councillor Joanne Sexton said the council was 'determined to avoid circumstances that could lead to civil unrest'. Spelthorne Borough Council said on Thursday that the Home Office had agreed to speak to the council on Friday to 'discuss the proposals in greater detail'. In a statement, the council said: 'We want to reassure residents that the council is fully aware of the concerns expressed by the community and is committed to raising these directly with the Home Office during the meeting.'
