Tigers, Blue Jays trending in opposite directions after break
The teams will play the second game of a four-game series on Friday night.
Toronto was held scoreless until the sixth, then racked up all of its runs in a three-inning span. The Blue Jays, who had a 10-game winning streak shortly before the break, have won six of seven games since the Mid-Summer Classic.
"These guys have been relentless," Toronto manager John Schneider said. "I've heard a lot of talk about us being a gritty team that isn't sustainable. I think the exact opposite. I think we're gritty as hell, but I think a lot of the stuff that we're doing is going to lead to a lot of wins."
Jose Berrios (6-4, 3.87 ERA), who will start for the Blue Jays on Friday, has a 2-1 record in four July starts despite a 7.11 ERA. He collected a victory on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants despite being charged with four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Berrios was pulled after just three innings in his previous outing, when he allowed four runs and five hits against the Athletics. Before that, he posted eight quality starts in 10 outings.
The veteran right-hander is 7-3 with a 4.23 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts) against Detroit. He had a no-decision against the Tigers on May 18 after giving up two runs and eight hits in six innings.
Detroit's Keider Montero (4-2, 4.28 ERA) will make his 15th appearance and ninth start of the season. Montero has gotten plenty of chances to seize the No. 5 spot in the rotation, vacated when prized rookie Jackson Jobe required Tommy John surgery, but hasn't secured it.
Following a sharp six-inning stint against Tampa Bay on July 7, Montero gave up three runs and five hits in three-plus innings against the Seattle Mariners on July 12. In his first post-All-Star-break outing, Montero allowed four runs, four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings against the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
The second-year right-hander faced Toronto once last season, surrendering five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Tigers still hold an eight-game lead in the American League Central but they are playing more like cellar-dwellers. They have lost 10 of their last 11 games, including four straight. Detroit is 1-6 since the break, having scored just 13 runs during that span.
The Tigers were limited to a Jahmai Jones solo homer on Thursday until they scored three meaningless runs in the ninth.
The team and its fans were spoiled by a glorious three months, and now the club is dealing with adversity for the first time this season.
"You know, it's been 11 days, but it feels like it's been a lot longer, and I think maybe that's because of the (All-Star) break," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "A lot of it is just the way that baseball is. We can choose to bring that garbage into tomorrow, or we can reset and get back after it.
"I know this team, I know the conversation around it over the last couple weeks. We've got to piece it back together."

Charlie Morton to make Tigers debut in series finale vs. Phillies
August 3 - The Detroit Tigers acquired Charlie Morton just before the trade deadline expired. They'll waste little time to put him into their rotation. Morton will make his Tigers debut when he starts the finale of a three-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Sunday night. Morton was a key member of the Houston rotation when the Astros won the 2017 World Series with A.J. Hinch as their manager. They're back together again with the American League Central leaders. "His presence alone will be really good for this team," Hinch said. "He's steady. He never gets too high or too low. He's done it, seen it, experienced it. He's gotten some of the most important outs and he's also had to fight and claw his way back into being a factor this year." The 41-year-old right-hander appeared to have nothing left to give earlier this season. He had an 0-7 record with a 9.38 ERA in his first nine appearances with Baltimore. After being banished to the bullpen for a short time, Morton (7-8, 5.42 ERA) returned to the Orioles rotation and turned his season around. Over his last 11 starts, he's 7-1 with a 3.88 ERA. "He's going to really help our rotation," Tigers general manager Scott Harris said. "We like Charlie because he's battle-tested. He's been up to 97 mph with his fastball and he's got a swing-and-miss curveball. He's pitched for A.J. before and he really endorsed him." In his last outing with the Orioles, he gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings against Toronto. "He's been on quite a good run," Harris said. "His top-line performance (numbers) are a little misleading. Since the end of April, he's been on a really good run, sub-4.00 ERA and throwing a ton of strikes with a ton of swing and miss." He's 5-7 with a 4.81 ERA in 20 career starts against the Phillies. Philadelphia starter Cristopher Sanchez (9-3, 2.55 ERA) had his streak of nine quality starts snapped in his last outing. The left-hander gave up four runs -- tying his season high -- and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to the Chicago White Sox on Monday. In his previous start, Sanchez notched a complete-game victory while striking out 12 and throwing 106 pitches in a 4-1 win over Boston on July 22. "Didn't know whether it was the travel, or coming off a complete game, the humidity, but the fifth, sixth and seventh, he turned it back on, and he had the finish back to his pitches," manager Rob Thomson said. Sanchez hasn't previously faced Detroit in his career. The teams have split the first two games of the series. Philadelphia rallied for a 5-4 win on Friday and Detroit held on for a 7-5 victory on Saturday. Both games were closed out by the teams' new closers. Jhoan Duran, acquired from Minnesota, got the save for the Phillies in the series opener. Kyle Finnegan recorded the last four outs for the Tigers in their bounce-back win. -Field Level Media

‘So respected and loved by so many': Deputy FM's tribute as footballer dies three weeks after crash on Twelfth
Aaron Moffett (38) was involved in a collision near Markethill, Co Armagh, while making his way back from the Twelfth parade in Keady. The crash happened on the Coolmillish Road at around 4.30pm on July 12. Mr Moffett was being treated in hospital prior to his passing. The defender had retired in 2021 after spending 13 years at Dollingstown FC as a player and captain, and had become club secretary. He won several trophies in his time with the club, including the Intermediate Cup in 2020 and the Bob Radcliffe Cup in 2016. Leading tributes, Emma Little-Pengelly said it was 'an absolute tragedy'. "Aaron was so respected and loved by so many,' she said. "It is a real testimony to him and his character to see the outpouring of grief and all the many poignant reflections on his life and contribution.' Mr Moffett was from the Knocknamuckley area. His former club Dollingstown FC posted poignantly: 'May you rest in peace skipper'. The club added: 'It is with total sadness that we announce the passing of Aaron Moffett. Words simply will never do him justice. 'Moff was simply Mr Dollingstown, loved by all. "(He played) 13 years as captain of the club, winning countless trophies along the way, he then took up the job of secretary where he played a vital role in the running and progress of the club ever since. 'He was respected and admired by clubs all over the island. We thank each and every one of you for the messages and phone calls of support. 'A total gentleman who we will never forget.' After the accident Dollingstown chairperson, Hubert Watson, said Aaron was with the club for 18 years and was loved and admired by everyone. 'For over 13 distinguished years as club captain, he led with unwavering pride and passion, securing countless trophies and unforgettable moments. "In his role as club secretary, he continued to guide and shape the future of our club with tireless dedication and integrity.' Another former club, Loughgall FC, expressed "great sadness' at the news. DUP MLA Jonathan Buckley said that Aaron's family are 'devastated'. Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Buckley said: 'He was a popular young man and they are a well-respected family; it is just devastating,' he said. 'He was known in so many circles and was so highly regarded, it was news no one wanted to hear. 'He fought a brave fight but he has unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and my thoughts go out to his wife Lindsey and mum and dad and sisters- and brothers-in-law and many uncles and aunties.'

Royals' Salvador Perez aims to ride power surge vs. Jays
August 3 - Salvador Perez is on a homer binge, and the visiting Kansas City Royals would like the trend to continue Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The teams have split the first two contests of their series, with Perez hitting a home run in each game. His second homer of the series came against Max Scherzer in the sixth inning of Toronto's 4-2 victory on Saturday. Perez also hit his first career homer against Scherzer on Aug. 29, 2011. He has 11 home runs in his past 21 games. "We need him and other guys to do it, too," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "You provide power in the middle of the lineup, and that is a big threat at any time." Perez became the first Royals player to have nine seasons with 20 or more home runs. Hall of Famer George Brett had eight. With 293 career home runs, he is close to becoming the eighth catcher to reach 300 in his career. The Royals are going for a series win that would give them a good start to their nine-game road trip. They hope that scheduled starter Seth Lugo (8-5, 3.03 ERA) can continue his success against the Blue Jays. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 20 1/3 innings over six career games (two starts) against them. The Blue Jays, who lead the American League East by four games, are expected to counter with right-hander Chris Bassitt (11-5, 4.24). In seven career starts against Kansas City, he is 1-2 with a 3.92 ERA in 39 innings. The Royals picked up two more injuries on Saturday. Second baseman Jonathan India was hit by a pitch on his left wrist and forearm in the third inning. He left the game in the fifth. "It's just a contusion," Quatraro said. "We got an X-ray and nothing is broken. Just sore. He has been battling that wrist, anyway, and he was hit there again." Reliever Steven Cruz left in the seventh with discomfort in his right shoulder and he will have further evaluation. "He felt a little pinching," Quatraro said. "Just kind of some normal throwing discomfort." Blue Jays catcher Tyler Heineman left the game in the fourth inning with what was termed a head contusion. He took a foul ball off his mask in the third inning and was hit on the hand by a pitch in the bottom of the third. Toronto manager John Schneider said that early indications were that he did not have a concussion. "It's more of a head contusion," Schneider said. "When I went out there, it was more kind of a headache, and his jaw got it a little bit. So, we will check him out (Sunday) and, hopefully, dodge a bullet. But he is doing all right." With catcher Alejandro Kirk on the concussion injured list, Ali Sanchez took over behind the plate. Kirk is expected to return to action on Sunday. "(Heineman) wanted to keep going, felt like he could keep going and, unfortunately, you've got to take it out of their hands sometimes," Schneider said. Toronto outfielder George Springer also is out with a concussion after being hit by a pitch against the Baltimore Orioles last week. The Blue Jays returned from a 4-4 road trip for a short homestand.
