Hong Kong – Canary in a goldmine
THE perception of Hong Kong's decline as a financial hub and desirable place to live is both understandable yet overstated. During a recent business trip to Europe, one consistent reaction stood out: Clients' faces flashed with concern and sympathy when I mentioned I was based in Hong Kong.
I get it. For years, the narrative around Hong Kong has been relentlessly downbeat: falling property prices; the 2019 protests; Covid lockdowns; expat departures; strained US-China relations; and renewed worries about the stability of the HKD-USD peg. The concerns are valid but, as I argue below, also misplaced.
Which major equity market has outperformed most others in 2025? Which market ranks fourth globally by capitalisation, trailing only the United States, mainland China, and Japan? Which market raised more in IPOs than Europe's exchanges combined this year? And which economy welcomed more tourists than Japan from January to May 2025? If you answered Hong Kong to all, you're absolutely correct. Surprised? Let me explain.
Golden goose
My optimism about Hong Kong's future hinges on its currency: the Hong Kong dollar (HKD). Within the Greater China region, no other city matches its currency's liquidity and convertibility (with apologies to Macau's pataca). Corporate China's unquenchable demand to recycle hard currency is well known, and until the renminbi becomes convertible – likely a distant prospect – Hong Kong's role as China's premier funding conduit remains secure.
But what about the HKD-USD peg's vulnerabilities? Recent media reports have highlighted pressures on the peg, and these concerns are reasonable. Yet, the strain isn't from capital flight; it's the opposite. Inflows from IPOs, dividends, and investment opportunities are so robust that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) had to sell some HK$47 billion (S$7.6 billion) in May 2025 to temper HKD appreciation.
Of course, an appreciating currency is a nice problem to have, as are interest rates at – or close to – record lows. But, either way, both are still problems if allowed to endure, potentially distorting the allocation of capital.

To be fair, the allure of a USD carry trade (selling HKD and investing in US money market funds for example) has seen the HKD's value normalise. But even two weeks on from the last mega-IPO, the monetary system remains awash with liquidity, allowing banks to reset mortgages rate lower and allowing refinancing opportunities for the beleaguered commercial real estate sector.
Local hero
With roughly comparable populations, land mass, and economic size, the friendly competition between Hong Kong and Singapore as rival business centres is as storied as it is long-running. Anyone who has recently visited Singapore will have been mightily impressed by the energy, opportunity, and confidence that the city state currently exudes; and might conclude – reasonably – that Hong Kong has (temporarily) lost its mojo to its ascendent challenger.
Yet, Hong Kong's role as China's financial gateway also gives it both a role and an edge, certainly in the ability to offer local companies liquidity for financing purposes. For example, Hong Kong's stock market has a total market capitalisation of US$6.3 trillion, entirely dwarfing Singapore's at merely US$0.5 trillion, a 13-fold difference. As China corporates consider delisting from the US or dual list in Hong Kong, one can assume Hong Kong's market capitalisation may likely increase.
Admittedly something of a stealth rally, the Hang Seng Index (HSI)'s year-to-date performance – largely complementing and reflecting renewed interest in China – may also have attracted international investors. At time of writing, the HSI was up 21 per cent on the year, outperforming the majority of competitor markets. My sense is as investors rotate thematically from US exceptionalism to – among other things – (China-centric) emerging market opportunities, local equities may further benefit in the months and quarters to come.
Canary's fragility
Yet for all Hong Kong's recent positives, as a financial entrepot it is both sensitive and vulnerable to the volatilities of global trade. And that is unlikely to change anytime soon. Thus, strained trade relations between the US and China – and the risk of high tariffs being imposed by the former on the latter – will negatively impact the city's fortunes.
Inevitably, Hong Kong reliance on mainland inflows – with some 80 per cent of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing's market cap tied to Chinese firms – exposes it to China's economic slowdown risks. Escalating geopolitical tensions or a faltering Chinese economy could trigger occasional liquidity shocks, potentially derailing Hong Kong's markets for a while.
At Lombard Odier, we are overweight equities, including those in emerging markets. Our preferred way to access China risk is via Hong Kong's H Share market. Thus far, it has been a satisfactory trade. But Hong Kong's East-West history positions it – somewhat uniquely – in the crosshairs of tensions between the world's two great superpowers. Hong Kong's resilience is well known and well regarded; but shouldn't be taken for granted.

Blackstone said to be in talks to buy embattled Allegiant resort
BLACKSTONE is in talks to purchase Allegiant Travel's Sunseeker resort, moving the parent of Allegiant Airlines closer to shedding the beleaguered retreat that had been a drag on earnings, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The two companies are still negotiating and talks could fall apart, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is not public. It was not immediately clear what price is being discussed. Representatives for Allegiant and Blackstone declined to comment. Blackstone last month registered an entity named Sunseeker Resort Owner LLC with the Florida Division of Corporations, along with others named Sunseeker Expansion I LLC, Sunseeker Expansion II LLC and Sunseeker Golf Owner LLC. Allegiant built the resort in Port Charlotte, Florida, as part of an effort by former chief executive officer John Redmond to extend Allegiant Travel's hold on consumers beyond arranging trips and flying passengers. The 785-room compound was troubled from the start, with construction suspended during the coronavirus pandemic and damage from hurricanes that further delayed work. The resort was finished four years late and US$200 million over budget, and occupancy rates did not meet projections. Overall, the campus cost US$720 million to build. Allegiant said in July it had hired Prospect Hotel Advisors LLC to advise it on options for the resort, including a sale of all or part of the sprawling property. Blackstone is a longtime lodging industry investor. Last year, the company struck deals for the W Fort Lauderdale and the Hyatt Regency Clearwater. It often makes significant investments to upgrade hotels after it buys them. BLOOMBERG

Singapore start-up on a green mission to keep mobile phones in use for longer

PHOTO: ALBA GROUP Singapore start-up on a green mission to keep mobile phones in use for longer SINGAPORE – Singaporeans are replacing their phones every 2.7 years , contributing to some 2.9 million mobile phones being stowed away, a new study shows. But one Singapore start-up is hoping to change this and keep phones in circulation for five years here. This will be even longer than the global smartphone replacement cycle of 3.5 years on average. Cinch plans to meet this target by renting out instead of selling the devices to consumers, ensuring that the returned units at the end of the rental period are refurbished to get a new lease of life with another user. 'We're trying to extend the useful life of these devices beyond the average refresh rate,' said Mr Mahir Hamid, chief executive and co-founder of Cinch , which commissioned the study to better understand consumer behaviour. Its study, conducted between late 2024 and early 2025 , involved interviews with firms that handle e-waste and used devices, as well as a survey of 500 Singapore-based respondents. Fresh from raising US$28.8 million (S$37 million) in funding led by Monk's Hill Ventures, Cinch is now actively pursuing consumers, letting them pay a monthly fee to rent the latest premium models of phones, laptops and other devices. Cinch will also foot 90 per cent of the repair cost of devices damaged due to accidents. For instance, the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge with 512GB storage is available from Cinch for a rental fee of $70 a month over two years . At the end of two years, consumers would have paid $1,680 . The same model can be bought from Samsung for $1,808 . An Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage can be rented from Cinch for $120 a month over 12 months . This will amount to a total of $1,440 at the end of the year. The same model costs $2,199 upfront from the Apple store. Customers can also buy direct from Samsung and Apple with an interest-free instalment plan, but it would require them to have a credit card from specific banks such as DBS, OCBC or UOB. 'There is a massive segment of the population for which a $2,000 to $3,000 purchase can be a significant proportion of their monthly salary,' said Mr Hamid. 'A subscription model allows them to access the premium device.' Cinch, which has been operating here since 2023 , has been leasing mostly to businesses such as those in the retail, logistics, information technology and public relations sectors. Around 10,000 devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets have been leased, most of which were returned and refurbished for a second or third customer. 'Every refurbished unit needs to be as good as new,' said Mr Hamid. 'If it doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't go back into circulation.' He said that all returned devices undergo a professional diagnostic sweep and complete data wipe so users do not have to worry about privacy leaks. Customers can buy their rented devices from Cinch if they wish, but it would likely cost more than buying from retailers such as Shopee or Lazada, said Mr Hamid, urging users to rent instead. Cinch has also partnered with waste management firm Alba Group since the start of 2025 to collect and recycle devices that can no longer be refurbished for new leases. During recycling, valuable materials such as precious metals and plastics are extracted from the e-waste. Singapore generates more than 60,000 tonnes of e-waste a year , according to a report by the National Environment Agency in 2018 . This is equivalent to 73 mobile phones disposed of per person in Singapore. Slowing down the device replacement cycle will reduce the overall volume of electronic waste that needs to be collected, sorted and processed, an Alba spokesperson told The Straits Times. 'Alba supports efforts like Cinch's to keep electronic devices in circulation for a longer period, as it aligns with our mission to reduce e-waste and promote a circular economy in Singapore,' said the spokesperson. PHOTO: CINCH The leasing of laptops, smartphones and tablets has become a standard practice among some businesses, as it allows them to access the latest technology without incurring huge upfront costs. Leasing is also a way of reducing depreciating assets. Leasing firms typically cover a device's configuration, maintenance, repair and eco-friendly disposal. Telcos Singtel and StarHub have been leasing devices to businesses since 2020 and 2021 respectively, while M1 does so only as part of a more comprehensive suite of tech services. Singtel started leasing devices to consumers in 2018 , but ceased the programme in 2022. Mr Keith Leong, Singtel's managing director of enterprise, said consumers find that they get better value from buying devices bundled with mobile plans. But businesses in sectors such as government, infocomm and aviation continue to lease from Singtel. While the device leasing meets the specific needs of some businesses, many consumers still choose to buy devices as it gives them full ownership and control, which can be cost-effective over the long run, said Mr Leong. 'Ultimately, both models provide valuable pathways to equip a mobile workforce effectively,' he said. Other rental firms such as Circular and have also been in the market since 2021 to wean consumers from device ownership. Apart from renting out phones, laptop, and gaming consoles, also rents out home appliances such as digital door locks and washing machines. Leasing an iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage space would cost between $69 and $82 a month for two years from Circular, depending on the phone's condition. The same model would cost between $92 and $99 a month for two years from Cinch's adviser Arvin Singh said that Netflix and Grab have proven that ownership of storage discs and cars, respectively, is not essential. 'Netflix for many years now has disrupted ownership of DVDs and hardware... So I think it's not a strange concept for consumers. When it comes to phones, maybe a bit more education is required , ' said Mr Singh. However, Ms Tracy Tsai, vice-president analyst of consulting firm Gartner , said that phones cannot be compared to DVDs, cars or bicycles as phones carry confidential personal data. The cost-effectiveness of renting also comes into question if users upgrade frequently, she added. 'But if users want to chase the latest phone every year, renting might be less of an issue.' Me & My Money: Early start in investing compounded into financial confidence
SINGAPORE – Finance professional Paul Chong got a head start in investing before even stepping into the workforce. His parents gave him $10,000 for investment in his final year of university, which he put into a portfolio of stocks. His prudent upbringing shaped his financial values – he was also brought up to never spend more than what he had. Fresh out of school in 2007, he started his investment management career with Fidelity International in Hong Kong, where he worked as an investment analyst for five years focusing on fundamental research in the Asia ex-Japan region. He then worked as a portfolio manager of Eastspring Investment's global emerging markets equity team before moving on to head the Greater China equity strategy at the same company. In mid-2024, Mr Chong, 43, with his 18 years of investment management experience, then co-founded investment management firm Bonham Investments. Bonham Investments, which Mr Chong does portfolio management for as well, helps its clients preserve and grow their capital over the long term through the funds that it offers. 'Our key differentiation is that our founders invest more than 80 per cent of their net worth into the funds that we manage to ensure that we have strong alignment of interest with our clients and significant skin in the game in the funds that we manage,' he said. Mr Chong holds a bachelor's degree in business management, majoring in finance from Singapore Management University. He is married with two sons aged eight and four. His wife, 36, works as an account manager. Q: Do you invest in anything? If yes, what do you invest in and why? I mostly invest my money in the stock market. Over the past 18 years, I have consistently invested over 80 per cent of my net worth in a portfolio of 15 to 30 stocks. I tend to put all my eggs into one basket and watch the basket very closely. The volatility is manageable but inevitable given it's a portfolio of stocks. However, if I had a long runway I tend to believe that volatility is not a risk, but permanent capital loss from picking the wrong stock is. The portfolio has been compounding at close to 15 per cent per annum over the past 18 years. What was a small portfolio 18 years ago has snowballed into the Bonham Asia Fund that I manage today. Q: What's your biggest or most valuable asset right now? My investment in the Bonham Asia Fund is by far the biggest asset I have right now. Q: What's your approach to growing your money? I am a firm believer of compounding, largely influenced by the books I read on Warren Buffett. I even made a trip to Omaha in 2024 before starting my own firm Bonham Investments. My journey in investment began quite early when I was in my final year of university when my parents 'seeded' me $10,000 to invest Q: Did you collect anything when you were younger? I have always enjoyed red wine but it was during the Covid-19 pandemic that I started buying red wine in larger quantities, thinking that I could sell them if I don't drink them. I bought mostly highly rated red wine at reasonable prices, which is quite similar to my investment style. Unfortunately, I ended up consuming most of them and selling a very limited number of them. I have over 100 bottles of wine at home at any point of time. Q: What has been your biggest financial mistake? I was in the thick of the bull market when I joined Fidelity fresh out of school in 2007. My first assignment as a young analyst was to cover the small capitalisation companies in Asia. Many of the companies that I looked at were trading at elevated valuations without much differentiation in the quality of the business. There was this small cement company that I really liked, and I pitched to a few portfolio managers to invest in it. When the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) came, the share price of this company corrected 50 per cent within a short period of time. It was then I was able to fully appreciate what Warren Buffett always says: 'Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked.' I believe we lost a few million US dollars for our clients in the funds. Since then, I have learnt the importance of deep fundamental research and investing with a margin of safety to avoid large capital loss Q: What has been your best financial decision? I was fortunate to learn from many experienced investors in Fidelity, not just in Asia but globally. One incident was particularly vivid. In the midst of pessimism during the GFC, an experienced and successful portfolio manager from our London office came to the Hong Kong office to share his experience in handling crisis, and the investment opportunities that could arise in a crisis. Many of the investors, myself included, went back to the drawing board to pick out high-quality companies with strong balance sheets and competitive advantages that could emerge stronger from a crisis. We eventually made a few hundred million US dollars for our clients on just one stock. It was also then that the contrarian investor in me started to develop Q: Money wise, what were your growing-up years like? I grew up in a middle-income family. My parents have always been prudent on finances. My siblings and I are instilled the value from a very young age not to spend more than what we have. Although I have never run into deficit, I do not have much savings before I started working. A good night out with my buddies or a good meal with my girlfriend could then easily deplete 30 per cent of my savings. I was only able to save substantially more after I started working, most of which would be channelled into investments as cash does not generate much interest, or even worse, the value could be eroded by inflation. Now, my family of four stays in a freehold three-bedroom apartment in the East, which we bought three years ago. I am driving a Kia Sorento, which is more of a family car. We switched to this car when my younger son was born and just before the COE supply was expected to tighten. I do not have much affiliation with cars, as I see them only as a mode of transportation. That said, I did have a dream of driving a convertible when I was younger, which I managed to fulfil when I was working in Hong Kong, where the cost of owning a car is much lower. Q. What was your first job? My first job was a research associate with Fidelity in Hong Kong. I was extremely fortunate because Fidelity only hired two fresh graduates in Asia, and apparently they received thousands of applications. Q. Did you do any part-time jobs? During my army and university days, I worked part-time as a tutor, table tennis coach, and umpire during my free time to cover some of my expenses. Q. What would you do if you suddenly had a windfall of $1 million? I would invest the money in the Bonham Asia Fund and let it compound. I don't think the windfall would change my lifestyle nor my spending habits. Right now, I am more focused on building the track record of the fund and generating the returns for my clients. Q. If you suddenly only had $100 to your name, what would you do with it? I would still invest the money in the stock market because I think one should always stay invested, regardless of the size. However, the amount is really not much in the bigger scheme of things. I will probably have to update my CV and start looking for a job in the asset management industry, where I have developed my skill set and network over the past 18 years.
