Ex-MLB player Darin Ruf sues Reds, claims their uncovered tarp caused his career-ending injury
The lawsuit was reportedly filed Thursday in the Hamilton County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas. It reportedly accuses the Reds of negligence for failing to maintain safe field conditions, specifically noting the risks presented by an unpadded metal tarp roller at Great American Ball Park.
Ruf encountered that tarp while playing first base for the Milwaukee Brewers on June 2, 2023. He tracked a foul ball toward the first-base stands and hit the tarp hard, leaving him with a deep laceration in his right knee and a non-displaced patella fracture.
His lawsuit reportedly describes the damage as 'permanent and substantial deformities to his knee.'

Ruf attempted to return later that season, hitting .120 in seven games on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, but never played another MLB game again. He did not sign with a team after becoming a free agent that winter.
He now blames the Reds for leaving a large metal object in the field of play, via the AP:
'This didn't need to happen,' Ruf said in a statement. 'I wish it didn't happen. Players shouldn't have to worry about hidden hazards like that on a major league field.'
His lawyer said the same:
'This was an obvious and avoidable risk,' Tad Thomas, Ruf's attorney, said in a release announcing the lawsuit. 'There are basic safety protocols every MLB team should follow. Leaving an unpadded metal roller on the edge of the field is inexcusable.'
Ruf played a total of nine seasons total in his MLB career. He began his career mostly as a bench bat at the corners for the Philadelphia Phillies before moving to South Korea's KBO and finding immense success with the Samsung Lions.
That success continued upon Ruf's return to MLB, as he enjoyed the two best seasons of his career with the San Francisco Giants in 2021. He was one of many overperforming bats that powered the Giants to a 107-win season that unseated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Ruf struggled after that, in stints with the Giants, Brewers and New York Mets across 2022 and 2023. It was unclear how much further he could have gone while hitting .224 in his age-36 season, but no player wants to end his career like he did.

However, losing a right-handed bat with a 120 OPS+, when the team is already lacking right-handed juice, would be very tough to justify.

MLB drops plan to start World Series early if both League Championship Series end by Game 5
NEW YORK — Major League Baseball dropped its plan to start the World Series early if both League Championship Series are short, announcing this year's Fall Classic will start on Oct. 24. MLB last year said Game 1 would move up from Oct. 25 to Oct. 22 if the LCS ended by Oct. 19, when both leagues were scheduled to be through Game 5. But the New York Mets won Game 5 of the NL Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6. Since the LCS expanded to best-of-seven in 1985, both leagues ended in four or five games in 1989, 2001, 2002, 2014 and 2022. Last year was the first in which MLB announced a flexible schedule. Game 7 of this year's World Series would be on Nov. 1. The World Series ended in November in 2001, '09, '10, '15, '16, '17, '21 and '22 and '23, going as late as Nov. 5 in 2022. The World Series is scheduled to start on a Friday for the fifth straight year. Before 2022, the Series had not started on a Friday since 1915. NL Division Series will have an extra scheduled off day between Games 1 and 2, a format that allows a team to have the same pitchers start Games 1 and 4, and Games 2 and 5 on normal four days' rest. Last year, AL Division Series had the extra off day. All four best-of-three Wild Card Series are scheduled for consecutive days from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the side of the higher seed. Twelve teams make the playoffs under the format that began in 2022. The top two teams in each league get first-round byes, while the No. 3 seed faces No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5. Browns All-Pro DE Myles Garrett ticketed after police say he drove 100 mph in Cleveland suburb
STRONGSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett has been accused of driving a Ferrari 100 mph on a suburban Cleveland interstate. The Strongsville Police Department stopped Garrett just after 2 a.m. Saturday in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 71 near the Ohio Turnpike, according to a citation. Garrett is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday but he could pay a $250 fine without appearing. Garrett is expected to be with the Browns in Philadelphia for a joint workout with the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles. Garrett was stopped less than an hour after the Browns landed at Hopkins International Airport after their 30-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. It is the second time in less than two months a Browns player has been stopped by Strongsville Police for speeding. On June 17, Shedeur Sanders was stopped for going 101 mph near the same stretch of highway as Garrett. In 2022, Garrett flipped his Porsche when he veered off a rural road near his home following practice.
