Storm Chances This Weekend Skies will remain mostly cloudy Friday night with a chance for showers and thunderstorms developing overnight. Temperatures will remain mild, with lows dipping into the low 70s. Saturday will bring another chance for showers and storms, especially during the afternoon hours. Daytime highs will climb into the low to mid-80s, and humidity will steadily increase into Saturday night as temperatures hold in the mid-70s.
Hot and Humid Sunday Sunday will feel more like midsummer, with hot and humid conditions settling over the area. Scattered showers and storms are again possible, primarily in the afternoon. High temperatures will rise into the low 90s, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees.
Cooler, Drier Air Arrives Monday A cold front will sweep through the region early Monday, bringing an end to the oppressive humidity. The front will usher in a stretch of pleasant, dry weather. Monday's highs will be in the mid-80s under mostly sunny skies, and overnight lows will drop into the mid-60s.
Comfortable Midweek, More Humid Late Week The calm weather continues Tuesday with ample sunshine, low humidity, and highs in the 80s. Conditions will turn more humid on Wednesday as highs rise into the mid to upper 80s.
By Thursday and Friday, heat and humidity will return. Scattered afternoon storms are likely each day. Highs on Thursday will top out around 90, while Friday could see highs in the mid-90s with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees once again.

Transformer failure causes Chicago power outage in Belmont Cragin, ComEd says
A transformer failure on Chicago's Northwest Side caused several thousand residents to lose power overnight as temperatures struggled to dip below 80 degrees. The outage happened in the city's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. ComEd said a transformer "went bad" in the area of Diversey and Cicero, causing power outages in the neighborhood. Some residents were forced outside into a warm night to get a break from the heat inside their homes. Others went to their cars to have air conditioning. Still others left the area to find relief elsewhere. One neighbor said first the lights went out and then it started to heat up inside her home. ComEd crews were at the scene to get power back on for those customers and said power had been restored as of 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Chicago is under a Heat Advisory for dangerous temperatures and humidity today. Overnight, air temperatures barely got below 80 degrees in many areas, with humidity making it feel warmer. The city of Chicago and Cook County operate cooling centers that are free for all to access if they need air conditioning. Most locations open at 9 a.m.

Drier air moves in after round of scattered showers across South Florida
Scattered showers and storms will move across South Florida on Thursday before drier air moves in just in time for the weekend. The chance of rain will be highest in the morning through the midday hours, with the potential for some heavy downpours and localized flooding. The atmosphere remains juicy and unstable due to an upper-level area of low pressure which has led to all the wet weather over the last few days. Afternoon highs will climb to the low 90s, but when the humidity is factored in, it will feel like the upper 90s and 100s. There is a moderate risk of rip currents along the Atlantic beaches and the UV index is extreme. There are no alerts or advisories for boaters over the Atlantic or Keys waters. Late Thursday afternoon, a plume of Saharan dust will begin to move and storms will push inland and to the west. The drier air and high pressure will bring drier, hotter conditions on Friday and through the weekend. It will be a scorcher due to the lack of rain and cloud coverage. Highs will soar to the low 90s and it will feel like the triple-digits. The National Weather Service may issue heat advisories. Early to middle of next week the chance of rain rises with the potential for passing showers and a few storms. The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a trough of low pressure over the north-central Gulf that has a low potential (10% chance) of development as it moves generally westward across the north-central portion of the Gulf. Regardless of development, this system is expected to bring heavy rain and the potential for flooding along the Gulf coast.

Severe storms possible in Southeast Michigan Thursday afternoon and evening
Thursday is a NEXT Weather Alert Day due to the extreme heat throughout Southeast Michigan. While temperatures are one part of the equation, high dew points are another. The dew points will reach into the 70s, making it feel "swampy" outside and allowing added energy to fuel storms. Storms are forecasted to reach Southeast Michigan between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday. Some of these storms could be strong to severe. Our greatest threat with these storms will be heavy rainfall in a short period of time followed by strong winds up to 60 mph. Secondary threats will include hail and isolated tornado chances. Showers and storms, along with heat and humidity, will continue into Friday and the weekend, but the risk of severe weather will be diminished.
