ASEAN Summit: Security drill and training set for May 5-7

The Sun30-04-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Security training and simulation ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit, scheduled to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on May 26-27, will be carried out from May 5 to 7 from 8 am to 6 pm.
National Security Council (MKN) deputy director-general (strategic security) Datuk Baharuddin Ahmad said the training was to ensure that the safety of international leaders and guests was at the highest level, in addition to testing the preparedness of the country's security forces.
'There are some simulations for ambushes, and when this training takes place, there will be one or two roads closed and it will involve a lot of machinery, such as the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) troops. So, I ask anyone who is around the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre area to remain calm.
'This training will be carried out like actual situations. For example, we are deploying a helicopter from a base, we want to test which base it should be mobilised from, we also want to test how long it takes for the helicopter to be deployed to another location for rescue,' he said as a guest on Bernama Radio today.
He added that cooperation for the preparation of the ASEAN Summit involves more than 13 agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department as well as various agencies and ministries.
Baharuddin said other preparations that are carried out meticulously and in detail also involve aspects of communications, cyber security and distribution of resources to ensure that there are no elements of sabotage that can tarnish the country's image.
'The objective of the MADANI Government and Malaysia, as the host, is to ensure that this summit runs smoothly so that it produces a good outcome in terms of economics, politics and technology between ASEAN countries and external partners,' he said.
Malaysia will host the 46th ASEAN Summit (May 26-27), while the ASEAN Summit with Dialogue Partners will begin at the end of October, as part of its role as the Chair of ASEAN in 2025.
The 46th ASEAN Summit is expected to convene all 10 ASEAN member state leaders to discuss regional issues as well as foster economic cooperation and champion the principles of inclusiveness and sustainability.
The theme of ASEAN 2025 is 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' as a unifying basis for regional and global engagement and reflects the region's collective commitment to shaping a resilient and equitable future.
Malaysia had previously held the ASEAN Chairmanship post in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

Polish President arrives in Malaysia for official visit

SEPANG: The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, arrived in Malaysia Monday (June 9) for a three-day official visit to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation. The visit, his first to Malaysia since taking office in August 2015, comes at a significant moment, coinciding with Malaysia's Asean 2025 chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025. The special aircraft carrying Duda, his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda and his delegation landed at the Bunga Raya Complex of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport here at 8.21pm. They were received by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. Duda then inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. The Polish President will be accorded an official welcome at Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, on Tuesday, followed by a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The two leaders are expected to deliberate on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including trade and investment, the defence industry, agriculture, the halal sector and agri-commodities. Anwar will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex in honour of Duda and his delegation. According to Wisma Putra, Duda is also scheduled to visit the Second Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps at Kem Sunggala, Port Dickson, and deliver a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya. The visit underscores the robust and friendly relations between Malaysia and Poland, which have been based on mutual respect and close cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971. In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5% to RM5.66bil compared to 2023. Malaysia's primary exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products and transport equipment. - Bernama

Ringgit flat before US-China trade talks

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit traded in a narrow range against the US dollar today amid cautious sentiment in the currency market ahead of US-China trade talks set to take place later today, said an analyst. 'Market participants were awaiting the outcome of the trade negotiation between the two economic superpowers,' said the analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that China's exports fell to 4.8% in May from 8.1% in the previous month, with exports to the US contracting 34.5% in May from a contraction of 21%. 'This suggests that the tariff shocks have taken a toll on bilateral trade between the US and China,' he told Bernama Meanwhile, Afzanizam said Bank Negara Malaysia's foreign exchange (forex) reserves continued to expand, climbing to US$119.6 billion at the end of May from US$119.1 billion in the middle of May. 'This suggests that the flow of funds on the ringgit has been constructive and may have supported the ringgit,' he added. At 6pm, the local note made a small retreat to 4.2290/4.2345 against the greenback compared to Friday's close of 4.2270/4.2360. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It eased against the Japanese yen to 2.9344/2.9384 from Friday's 2.9324/2.9390, depreciated versus the British pound to 5.7392/5.7466 from 5.7212/5.7334, and fell vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8316/4.8379 from 4.8268/4.8371. The local currency traded mixed against most of its Asean peers. It fell versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2908/3.2953 from 3.2862/3.2934 but gained against the Thai baht to 12.9414/12.9642 from 12.9599/12.9947 on Friday. The domestic unit advanced vis-à-vis the Philippine peso to 7.57/7.59 from 7.58/7.60 but was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 259.5/260 from 259.5/260.2 previously.
