QuickCheck: Will motorcyclists have to pay a toll on highways soon?

The Stara day ago
Rumours travel fast on social media, especially when wallets are involved.
One such rumour that zoomed across a variety of platforms recently was the claim that motorcyclists would have to pay a toll when travelling on Malaysian highways from October.
Is this claim – one that has sparked debate and some concern – actually true?
VERDICT:
FALSE
In a statement, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has denied and expressed deep regret over a misleading social media post claiming motorcyclists will pay tolls from Oct 2025.
The post, titled "Motorcyclists Can Experience Paying Tolls Starting October 2025", was uploaded by the account ebidmotor on Aug 9, 2025, across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
In the statement, LLM said that it contained inaccurate information that could have misled highway users, particularly motorcyclists.
It added that the claim has harmed the reputations of the Government, the Works Ministry, LLM and the concessionaires involved.
LLM then explained that PLUS Malaysia Berhad is currently conducting tests on an open toll system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
'If the test is successful, implementation will be carried out in stages on highways operated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad.
The main objective of this system is to streamline traffic flow, enhance user comfort, and reduce congestion at toll plazas,' said LLM
'There are no changes to the categories of vehicles subject to tolls at this time, including motorcyclists. Therefore, the post uploaded by ebidmotor is untrue, misleading, and can cause unnecessary concern among motorcyclists,' it added.
It then said that the public, especially toll highway users, is urged to not believe or spread false or misleading information.
'Instead, refer to official sources and statements verified by the authorities,' said LLM.

The Prime Minister said these areas were among the key topics discussed during a courtesy call by Senegal's Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall, earlier Monday (Aug 11). "We also exchanged views on various regional and international issues of mutual concern, including developments in the Middle East and the African continent," Anwar said in a Facebook post. Fall is in Malaysia for a two-day official visit starting Monday as a reciprocation of the official visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to Senegal in May 2024. Cable reels fall on NKVE highway after trailer hits flyover

A dangerous incident on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) last Thursday saw enormous cable reels scatter across multiple lanes after the transport trailer carrying them collided with a flyover structure. The dramatic event unfolded at the 8.7-kilometer mark along the Damansara-Setia Alam section of the expressway, creating hazardous conditions for motorists traveling on the busy four-lane route. Dashcam footage circulated through the DashCam Malaysia Facebook community page captured the alarming sequence as the heavy-duty trailer approached the overhead structure while transporting two substantial industrial cable reels. The collision occurred when the trailer's cargo clearance proved insufficient for the flyover height, resulting in the cable reels' upper portions striking the concrete structure above. The impact immediately dislodged both reels from their securing mechanisms. Following the collision, the massive industrial equipment tumbled onto the active highway lanes, forcing nearby vehicles to take immediate evasive action. Drivers were compelled to reduce speed dramatically and navigate around the fallen cargo to avoid potential collisions. According to Oriental Daily, in the aftermath of the incident, both cable reels were left across the expressway's central and outer lanes, creating significant obstruction to traffic flow. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about cargo transportation safety and load height verification procedures on Malaysia's highway network. The NKVE serves as a critical arterial route connecting multiple urban centers and industrial zones throughout the Klang Valley region. Such incidents underscore the importance of proper load measurement and route planning for commercial vehicles transporting oversized cargo through areas with overhead infrastructure limitations. The scattered cable reels created immediate traffic disruption along one of Malaysia's most utilised expressways, though no immediate reports of injuries or secondary accidents have emerged from the incident. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether proper height clearance protocols were followed prior to the truck's departure and route selection.

Malaysia aims to expand cocoa cultivation to 10,000 hectares by 2030

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) has set a target to expand Malaysia's cocoa cultivation area to 10,000 hectares by 2030. This initiative aims to meet rising demand for high-quality Malaysian cocoa, up from the current 5,985 hectares. Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin highlighted the Cocoa Cultivation Promotion Programme as a key strategy. The programme, led by KPK and the Malaysian Cocoa Board, focuses on boosting cultivation through the plantation sector. Chan also announced an upcoming engagement programme in Tawau to promote cocoa farming in Sabah. He shared this during a Dewan Rakyat session in response to a question from Datuk Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau). Recent data shows dried cocoa bean prices surged by 141 per cent to RM24,274 per metric tonne in 2024. This marks a significant rise from RM10,073 in 2023, reflecting growing market demand. When asked about cocoa-based products, Chan emphasised KPK's focus on branding premium local cocoa. The ministry promotes single-origin and fine-flavoured cocoa to attract global chocolate makers. KPK also provides tailored support to farmers, including fertilisers and pest control measures. These efforts aim to enhance soil fertility and reduce crop losses from pests and diseases. The expansion plan aligns with Malaysia's goal to strengthen its position in the global cocoa market. Farmers will benefit from targeted assistance to sustain and grow their cocoa cultivation. The initiative underscores Malaysia's commitment to high-quality cocoa production and agricultural sustainability. With rising prices and demand, the sector presents new opportunities for local producers. The government's support aims to ensure long-term growth and competitiveness in the cocoa industry. - Bernama
