Clashes, rail blockades, and protests mark Bharat Bandh in Bengal over anti-worker, anti-farmer policies
The bandh, which was part of a larger nationwide protest, led to significant disruption in public transport, clashes with police, and the detention of several protesters across districts.
From early morning, Left Front supporters hit the streets in large numbers, particularly in Kolkata and South Bengal districts, blocking railway tracks and attempting to shut down markets and offices. According to the police, 20 people have been arrested so far for destroying government property and breaking the law and order situation in the state.
Violent scuffles broke out at several locations, with the most high-profile incident taking place at Gangulibagan in Jadavpur, South Kolkata, where SFI's All India General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya was allegedly injured during a confrontation with police.
According to party sources, Bhattacharya was dragged away from the protest site, his shirt torn in the melee. He later accused the police of manhandling him and slammed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for attempting to sabotage the strike to appease the BJP.
In response, TMC remained firm in its opposition to the bandh. The state government had earlier issued a notification mandating attendance in government offices and ordered all schools to remain open, indicating its intent to maintain normalcy.
In multiple areas, including Belgharia and Barrackpore in the North 24 Parganas district, Krishnanagar in the Nadia district, and Jadavpur, protesters blocked railway lines, forcing trains to a halt and causing major delays during peak office hours.
A similar disruption was reported at Talpur station in Tarakeshwar, where Left-affiliated agricultural workers obstructed the Arambagh-bound local train.
The unrest was not confined to Kolkata. In South Dinajpur's Buniadpur, tensions escalated when a local CPM leader, Majedur Rahman, was allegedly slapped by the Officer-in-Charge of Banshihari police station during a picketing protest.
Rahman was later detained, sparking angry demonstrations and fresh allegations of police excess and political vendetta. Left leaders decried the act as a 'blatant misuse of power' and threatened a larger statewide agitation.
The bandh was part of a coordinated nationwide strike involving more than 250 million workers, aimed at highlighting long-standing grievances, including price rises, erosion of labour rights, and declining rural employment opportunities like MGNREGA.
Speaking to the media, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said, 'We were compelled to take to the streets because the government continues to ignore our 17-point charter of demands. In the past decade, not even one annual labour conference has been held.'
Essential services across India—including banking, postal services, coal mining, and government-run industries—faced disruptions.
In Bengal, however, the spotlight remained firmly on the streets, where political confrontation and public resistance clashed head-on with state authority.

Sanjay Raut calls Fadnavis "Joker of Politics" over graft allegations
Mumbai Aug 17 ( UNI) Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) MP Sanjay Raut today launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that while Fadnavis has handed over prime plots in Mumbai, including Dharavi, to industrialist Gautam Adani, he ironically accuses Shiv Sena of corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). "After U.S. President Donald Trump, Fadnavis is the joker of politics," Raut remarked. Fadnavis, while attending the Parivartan Dahi Handi event at Mumbai's Jamboree Maidan, has said that change in the upcoming municipal elections is inevitable, claiming that corruption under Shiv Sena's long rule in the BMC will be exposed and development will prevail. Responding to this, Raut countered that during Shiv Sena's tenure, deposits worth Rs 90,000 crore were safely placed in banks. He alleged that corruption occurred under the BJ-led government, with leaders from Fadnavis's side "misappropriating" these funds. "Those indulging in corruption are within your cabinet. Don't shield the thieves, crooks, and looters around you. Otherwise, Maharashtra will not forgive you," Raut warned Fadnavis. He further alleged that while the state treasury is empty and no clarity exists on who has been awarded which projects, commission worth 25% from contracts totalling ₹2 lakh crore has reached people close to Fadnavis. Delhi-bound Air India flight aborts take off at Kochi airport due to technical issue
A Delhi-bound Air India plane aborted take off at the Kochi airport on Sunday (August 17, 2025) evening due to a technical issue, officials said. A Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) spokesperson told PTI that a technical issue caused the Air India flight to abort the take off. Lok Sabha member and Congress leader Hibi Eden was among those on board the flight. Flight AI504 operating from Kochi to Delhi has been rescheduled to depart later this evening, necessitated by a technical issue detected during the take-off roll, an Air India spokesperson said in a statement. "The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run following standard operating procedures and brought the aircraft back to the bay for maintenance checks," the spokesperson said. The CIAL spokesperson also said the airline is changing the aircraft and the flight is now expected to depart at 1 a.m. on Monday. Details about the number of passengers on board the flight could not be immediately ascertained. In a Facebook post, Eden said there was something unusual about Flight AI 504. "Something unusual with this flight AI 504... it just felt like the flight skid on the runway... and hasn't taken off yet...," the Ernakulam MP said. Regretting the inconvenience caused to the passengers, the Air India spokesperson said, "All passengers have disembarked and our ground colleagues in Kochi are extending support to them." The flight AI 504 was to be operated with an Airbus A321 aircraft, according to information available on flight tracking website In a statement issued earlier on Sunday, Air India said it cancelled its Milan-Delhi flight of August 16 after detecting a maintenance issue at the last minute. "Flight AI138 operating from Milan to Delhi on August 16 was cancelled due to a maintenance task identified during pushback," the statement said. In recent weeks, some Air India planes have faced technical issues. A Delhi-bound flight from Bhubaneswar was cancelled just prior to its departure on August 3 due to high cabin temperature. On July 31, an Air India Boeing 787-9 aircraft flying to London had to abort take off at Delhi airport and return to the bay due to a technical issue.
