Lorde reveals gender fluidity and says 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man'

Express Tribune16-05-2025

In a recent Rolling Stone interview with journalist Brittany Spanos, singer-songwriter Lorde opened up about her evolving sense of gender identity, revealing how it informs her upcoming album Virgin, due out June 27.
The album's opening track features the lyric, 'Some days I'm a woman / Some days I'm a man.' When asked about this line and her current identity, Lorde shared a candid moment with fellow artist Chappell Roan. 'She was like, 'So, are you nonbinary now?' And I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man.' I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up,' she said.
While Lorde continues to identify as a cisgender woman and uses she/her pronouns, she described herself as feeling 'in the middle gender-wise.' She emphasized her comfort with fluidity, noting that she often feels connected to her teenage self—especially in the way she dressed and moved through the world when most of her friends were boys.
A turning point came in 2023 when Lorde tried on a pair of men's jeans at clothing store C'H'C'M' and sent a photo to Virgin producer Jim-E Stack. 'He was like, 'I want to see the you that's in this picture represented in the music.'' She credits that moment as a creative spark that influenced the project's direction.
With Virgin set to release June 27, followed by a global tour, Lorde's exploration of gender identity is poised to shape both her personal narrative and the next phase of her musical journey.

Lorde sneaks into Sydney club to party with fans ahead of upcoming album release

Lorde made an unexpected appearance at a Lorde-themed club night in Sydney on Sunday, delighting fans at Mary's Underground. The event was a celebration of the New Zealand artist's discography, but few expected the singer herself to show up. According to attendees, she entered incognito before revealing herself on the dancefloor. EMI Australia confirmed the visit was Lorde's 'impromptu decision,' with no label coordination. Fan Andrew Fraser said she mingled with attendees, dancing, greeting fans, and listening to stories about how her music impacted them. 'She almost refused to leave when her management were trying to usher her out,' the venue added. Photo: Cester/Suga Rush/Emma Parke During the night, Lorde joined the DJ booth and lip-synced to her remix of Girl, so confusing. She also sang along to her current single What Was That, which debuted last month at another surprise fan event in New York's Washington Square Park. That gathering had to be shut down by police due to crowd size, and footage from it later featured in the single's official video. Lorde's Sydney appearance comes just a month before the release of her highly anticipated new album Virgin, set for June 27. It will be her first studio album in four years.

Lorde announces Ultrasound tour dates in support of upcoming album 'Virgin'

Lorde has officially announced the dates for her Ultrasound Tour, set to kick off in North America and Europe later this year. The announcement, made on May 8 via Instagram, comes ahead of the release of her highly anticipated album Virgin, slated for June 27. The tour will begin on September 17 in Austin, Texas, with shows across the U.S. and Canada, including stops in Chicago, Nashville, Toronto, Boston, New York City, Las Vegas, and Seattle. After wrapping up the North American leg in late October, Lorde will head to Europe for performances in Luxembourg, Paris, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Berlin, with the final show in Stockholm on December 9. Lorde expressed her excitement in the post, sharing that she would be bringing along talented artists such as Blood Orange's Dev Hynes, The Japanese House, Nilüfer Yanya, Chanel Beads, Empress Of, and Oklou for select dates. She also teased her fans with a reference to her album's cover art, saying, 'Come see what's under the skin.' Tickets for the tour will go on sale on May 16, with a pre-sale starting on May 14 at 10 a.m. local time. Fans can register for early access on Lorde's official website. This tour marks Lorde's first major arena tour since her 2017-2018 Melodrama World Tour. It also follows her 2021 Solar Power Tour, which saw her performing in more intimate venues. The announcement comes on the heels of Lorde's recent single 'What Was That,' which served as a precursor to Virgin.
