India Asia Cup 2025 squad: Shubman Gill made vice captain; no Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal
The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI men's selection committee put all speculations to rest by naming Shubman Gill in India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Gill, who did not feature in any of India's last three bilateral T20Is against Bangladesh, South Africa and England, found his way back into the mix on the back of a stellar show as captain and batter in the five-match Test series in England. Gill scored a record 754 runs at an average of 75. The 25-year-old has been named as the vice-captain of the T20I team. Shubman Gill hasn't been picked in the Asia Cup squad. (BCCI - X) Gill's last T20I was in July 2024, but he was the vice captain of the side in that series against Sri Lanka. Before that, he led India for the first time in a T20I series in Zimbabwe. As Gill was an equally important member of the ODI and Test squad, the selectors decided to remove him from the shortest formats. When a big tournament like the Asia Cup comes in, there will never be any doubts about Gill's spot. What actually started the debate was the way Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson performed as an opening pair in Gill's absence. Both Abhishek and Sanju scored a couple of centuries each and pretty much cemented their places in the T20I XI. The selectors, however, have decided to bank on Gill's quality. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have formed a formidable opening pair in T20Is for India over the course of the last eight to ten months. Hence, it is no surprise that the duo retain their place in the squad for the Asia Cup. Jasprit Bumrah had informed the selectors about his availability for the Asia Cup last week. Hence, it is no surprise that the ace speedster is in the main squad for the tournament. Bumrah will be ably supported by Arshdeep Singh, who has slowly and steadily emerged as a force to reckon with in the shortest format. The selectors have also opted to stick with Tilak Varma, who has been in phenomenal form in international T20Is. Tilak Varma scored back-to-back centuries against South Africa last year in the T20I series, and he was also in good form in the five-match series against England. No place for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer The squad has no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. The latter set the stage on fire in the IPL for the Punjab Kings. However, the selectors have opted not to give him a chance for the Asia Cup. India's Asia Cup squad has been announced, and Shubman Gill is well and truly back. The Test captain will serve as the deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in the eight-team tournament, beginning September 9 in the UAE. It was expected that the 25-year-old would find a place in the team after having a strong Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season for the Gujarat Titans, where he led the side into the playoffs. Speaking to the media, Suryakumar Yadav said that Shubman Gill was the vice-captain when India went to Sri Lanka for the T20I series. Stating how a new cycle was started after India's T20 World Cup 2024, the management opted to bring back Gill. 'In my opinion, the last time Shubman Gill played a T20I for India was when we went to Sri Lanka. When I was leading, he was the vice-captain. That's where we started the new cycle for the T20 World Cup. After that, he got busy with all the Test series. He didn't get an opportunity to play T20Is because he was busy with Test cricket and the Champions Trophy,' Suryakumar Yadav told reporters. 'He is in the squad and we are happy to have him. This is the first big tournament we are playing after the T20 World Cup. We played a few bilaterals, but this is a good tournament to test ourselves. There are a lot of T20S before we play the first game of the T20 World Cup. This is where the journey starts for the tournament,' he added. Shubman Gill has steadily built an impressive T20 resume, showcasing both consistency and flair. In 21 T20 Internationals, he has scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a healthy strike rate of 139.27, including one century and three fifties. His ability to anchor and accelerate was further highlighted in IPL 2025, where he amassed 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87, with six fifties. Notably, Gill is among the select few Indians with centuries across all three international formats. Playing in IPL is my priority, no favorite franchise, says Anuj Rawat
New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): East Delhi Rider skipper Anuj Rawat expressed his desire to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as his top priority, and he sees the Gujarat Titans (GT) as a great opportunity. However, Rawat also believes options for different teams are always open, without any favourite franchise. 'The most important thing for me is to play. I think GT is a very good thing for me, but options are always open. There is no such favourite. But definitely, wherever I go, I want to play," Anuj Rawat told ANI. Rawat didn't play any fixture in the IPL 2025 for GT; however, he has been part of 24 matches in the rich league. He has made 318 out of those 24 fixtures at an average of 19.88 and a strike rate of Rawat's captaincy, East Delhi Riders, in the ongoing Delhi Premier League (DPL) season 2, with five victories out of their seven fixtures, are placed second in the DPL points table. Rawat with the bat has been in fine has slammed 232 in seven matches at an average of 46.40 and a strike rate of 184.13, with three fifties under his belt. Rawat also felt that his good performances in DPL would be reflected in the upcoming Indian domestic season, and Rawat believes he is 100 per cent ready to play in IPL.'Whatever I am doing, whatever you can see in DPL, I think that will be seen in domestic too. But I always feel that I am 100 per cent ready to play in IPL," he added. Rawat emphasised the learning he gained from practising with his GT teammate Jos Buttler and assistant coach Parthiv Patel in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.'There are a lot of talks. Jos Butler and Parthiv Patel are also there. So when you practice with them, you get to learn small things. Things that you can't do yourself, you get to learn from them as a batter. I talk to Jos a lot on the field and off the field. And I think I have worked a lot with Parthiv Patel, and I think that thing is helping me this season too," Rawat said. (ANI)
