
International designers shine in Paris pop-up stores ahead of fashion weeks
The Africa Now pop-up will run on the third floor of Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann from June 18 to July 8, 2025. The 'Canex Presents Africa' initiative, led by Afreximbank and supported by Tranoï, organizes the event. The pop-up features the brands Boyedoe, Late for Work, We Are Nbo, and Wuman. The labels will showcase ready-to-wear and accessories in a 90-square-meter space.
Boyedoe is a Ghanaian "afro-luxe" brand that explores spirit, silhouette, sustainability and sophistication themes. Founded in 2020 by designer David Boye-Doe, a 2025 LVMH Prize semi-finalist, the label extensively uses denim, combining patchwork, stripes, oversized cuts and tailored jackets.
Late for Work is a womenswear brand by Moroccan designer Youssef Drissi. The label reinterprets formal pieces such as suits and shirts, blending, cropping and cinching them to create fresh silhouettes.
We Are Nbo is a jewelry brand based in Nairobi, Kenya. Designer Michael Nguthu works in partnership with artisans from disadvantaged backgrounds. The pieces are crafted from recycled and upcycled materials such as copper, bone and wood, drawing inspiration from natural forms and Kenya's cultural heritage.
Wuman is a Nigerian label founded by Ekwerike Chukwuma, a 2023 Amiri Prize finalist. The designer creates pieces that blend traditional Nigerian and Western garments, incorporating hand-drawn and geometric prints.
The pop-up will also include brands selected by the Adama Paris collective, Africa Fashion Up and Studio Ka, including Nene Yaya (Senegal), Adama Paris, Ibrahim Fernandez (Côte d'Ivoire), Sisters of Afrika (Senegal), Banke Kuku (Nigeria), Algueye (Senegal), Bandama (Côte d'Ivoire), and Collé Sow Ardo (Senegal).
The Paris Korean Club organizes the Korean Wave pop-up, which runs on the sixth floor of BHV Le Marais from June 11 to July 13. The space celebrates Korean lifestyle as a whole and features several beauty brands and one fashion label, Moon Younghee, which greets visitors at the entrance.
Founded in the 1990s by the designer of the same name, Moon Younghee operates a boutique at 19, quai Malaquais, in Paris' 6th arrondissement. After initially hesitating, the designer ultimately agreed to present archival pieces from her brand at the event. The racks on display feature a variety of one-of-a-kind garments, all crafted in the French capital.
The beauty section features Korean beauty (K-beauty) brands, which are enjoying strong momentum. Mi-Rê Cosmetics bridges Korean innovation and French expertise. The brand promotes the concept of "pro-age active makeup" with its flagship product, BiBi Nova Cushion—a hydrating, UV-protective foundation. The Korean Wave event also features Nüd, a young brand founded by Yaël Gozlan and Cyril Mourali, drawing on K-beauty principles.
L'Îlot 7
The third pop-up, L'Îlot 7, is located at 7, rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie in Paris' 3rd arrondissement, and will run from June 5 to July 6, 2025. The concept store brings together about ten brands from Singapore spanning fashion, accessories, design and lifestyle.
In ready-to-wear, Chota House offers a denim wardrobe influenced by American fashion and East Asian workwear. Su By Hand presents lightweight, timeless womenswear made by hand, using materials sourced from regenerative, organic agriculture or deadstock.
The Olive Basics label offers functional clothing for all stages of a woman's life, including pregnancy and breastfeeding. Sabrinagoh delivers airy designs, often crafted from linen.
Leather goods brand Stone for Gold offers cardholders, watch straps, and leather pouches and collaborates with Ray-Ban, Rolex, and Tiffany & Co. The pop-up also features jewelry brands, including Flin Lee, which uses faceted stones, and Risis, which transforms real orchids into jewelry by covering them in gold. Justine Jewelry offers discreet pieces combining stones and metals.
Footwear brand Kibo crafts its shoes using apple leather and recycled plastic. Recent designs include smile motifs created in collaboration with Smiley. Finally, retailer Dors presents a selection of ready-to-wear pieces and accessories.

When Ithell Colquhoun passed away in 1988 at the age of 81, her death went unnoticed. This summer, Tate Britain is giving her a comprehensive retrospective in London, following its initial presentation at Tate St Ives in Cornwall, where the artist spent much of her life. This recognition is as overdue as it is well-deserved. In France, where she is not very well known, her reputation is just starting to grow. A few of her works appeared in the "Feminine Surrealism?" exhibition at the Montmartre Museum in 2023 and in the "Surrealism" exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2024. These exhibitions may be the first signs of a larger French exhibition to come. After visiting Tate Britain, one leaves convinced that few of Colquhoun's contemporaries demonstrated as much consistency, determination and boldness in their artistic explorations. Colquhoun cared more about exploring her thoughts and questions to their limits than about being understood. As early as the late 1920s, she dared to paint and exhibit works that rejected conventional rules of decency and ordinary principles of rationality – even though, as a woman artist, she inevitably faced additional disapproval. One of her most transgressive paintings takes its title from ancient mythology: 1938's Scylla, from her Méditerranée series.

As the school year drew to a close, he prepared for his end-of-year exams and reassured himself by thinking about the excellent score (90 out of 100) he received in the mock math test. To unwind, this 15 year old is one of the few in his group to play badminton in his free time. His friends at school prefer the video game Roblox. And while @Fidel also sometimes spent hours each day in front of his laptop, it's not for gaming: From his bedroom, which he has to himself in the family apartment, he manages an illegal streaming site. On this site – let's call it "Vizix" (the name has been changed) – French internet users can watch thousands of pirated movies and series without downloading them. In a player similar to those on YouTube or Dailymotion, videos load in French or in the original language with subtitles, often in very good quality. Most of the content comes from paid platforms (Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+), but a few films still in theaters can also be found: Minecraft, Mission: Impossible and Lilo & Stitch were among the "trending" titles in May. The only catch is that each video is preceded by an ad, which can be disabled with a €2 monthly subscription.

How Drag Race attempts to reconcile entertaintment and politics
After three publicly acclaimed seasons, some of the most beloved Drag Race France cast members returned to TV screens last month for France's first All Stars edition. However, audiences were surprised to see that singer and DJ Kiddy Smile, who had been a main judge since the show's first season, would not reprise his role. Fans speculated that his past positions against cultural appropriation and in defence of racially oppressed people had made him too political for the publicly-broadcast programme. But the event exemplified the competing imperatives of a franchise that has brought the art of drag well into mainstream culture while attempting to preserve its deeply political roots. Drag queen RuPaul Charles created RuPaul's Drag Race in 2009 to look for 'America's next drag superstar.' The series resembled classic reality television contests. It included challenges, eliminations and all the drama you could hope for - but with an extra dose of glitter, lavish wigs and gravity-defying heels. The programme has since exceeded expectations. The original US version has aired for 17 seasons, and the franchise now includes international declinations in more than 15 countries, as well as various spin-offs and events. Commodifying drag Drag Race's multimedia empire has revealed prominent artists, from Trixie Mattel and Vanessa Vanije in the US to Philippines' Marina Summers and the UK's Lawrence Chaney. Iconic drag culture phrases have trickled down from the show to Gen Z vernacular. When you say that someone 'slayed', 'ate' or is 'mother,' you're speaking drag. But for some within the drag and LGBTQ+ communities, this success has also led to the commodification of an originally subversive art. For French drag queen Emily Tante, Drag Race keeps raising the expectations placed on artists. 'Judges want more and more fashion and extravagance,' she writes in the online queer Friction Magazine. 'The queens of the Drag Race franchise have gone into debt in the hope of winning this TV contest. This also leads to higher expectations from the audience.' But in real life, doing drag is often financially unstable and many live performers struggle to get paid for their gigs. Drag Race's spotlight then becomes a precious but rare opportunity. 'I still need a little more visibility to succeed in my projects,' drag queen Magnetica shared as she was facing elimination in the first episode of the current Drag Race France All Stars season. 'Drag has been girdled by the logic of competitive individualism and the free market,' researchers Zeena Feldman and Jamie Hakim wrote in a 2020 analysis. They argued that the show's mainstreaming of this art perpetuates 'a culture that positions drag as an economic vehicle rather [than] as a means of mocking, querying or dismantling dominant power structures.' 'Not just an aesthetic' The contest has often been accused of promoting a specific vision of drag, especially due to its exclusion of drag kings. RuPaul also came under fire in the show's earlier seasons for his reluctance to include post-transition trans women. Multiple transgender and non-binary contestants have since competed in the programme. Drag's inherent political nature is at the heart of Drag Race's relationship with its viewers. Some consider that the show is too politicised. Others, not enough. For former judge Kiddy Smile, drag is 'not just an aesthetic,' but an art form that embodies queer history. For instance, drag queens were central characters in the 1969 Stonewall riots, and since then, they have kept on fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and helped create safe spaces for marginalised groups. 'Drag subverts gender norms,' Kiddy Smile said in an Instagram post. 'In communities where these norms are strongly valued, the mere presence of a drag queen becomes a gentle but extremely radical act of confrontation.' Today, Drag Race is possibly the most widespread and popular expression of drag culture. The show is broadcast on public networks in several countries, including in France, Belgium and the UK. It entertains audiences but also tackles questions like mental health, HIV and conversion therapy. Drag Race contestants also raise awareness on LGBTQ+ issues off screen, with the show's US stars slamming Donald Trump's 'two genders' policy. Several cast members also criticised the UK Supreme Court's April ruling on the definition of the term "woman". For those directly involved, the Drag Race franchise remains a political space where, according to three-time participant Soa de Muse, 'we are woke, we will stay woke, and we are proud of it.'
