Pahalgam Terror Attack: Dry Fruits To Get Costlier As Attari-Wagah Border Closes?

While current shipments are in transit and prices remain stable for now, the situation could change after 10 days, says Rajiv Batra, president of Delhi's Khari Baoli traders' body.
With the closure of the the Attari-Wagah border amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam Terror Attack, dry fruit imports from Afghanistan are likely to be hit, triggering a potential spike in prices across India, according to The Times of India report.
Afghanistan is a major supplier of dry fruits like almonds, raisins, and pistachios to India. Trade data shows that in April-January of FY2024-25, India imported $358 million worth of goods from Afghanistan, of which dry fruits formed a significant portion.
According to Rajiv Batra, president of Delhi's Khari Baoli traders' association, as reported by TOI, while current shipments are in transit and prices remain stable for now, the situation could change after 10 days. He warns prices in the national capital may rise by up to 20 per cent once stocks deplete.
With trade through Pakistan suspended — including third-party shipments via Pakistan — India is exploring alternative supply routes through the UAE, Iran, and Iraq, which are expected to partially replace the Afghan supply, said Batra, according to TOI.
The trigger for the trade suspension was a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, prompting India to take a number of steps against Pakistan, including halting cargo movement through the Attari border.

Jyotiraditya Scindia's Son Mahanaryaman To Lead Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association?

Last Updated: Mahanaryaman Scindia, son of Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, is speculated to be the frontrunner for MPCA president in the September 2 election The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) is heading into a crucial election on September 2, and all eyes are on whether Mahanaryaman Scindia, son of Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, will emerge as the next president. Though nothing has been officially declared, strong speculation within cricketing and political circles suggests that Mahanaryaman may be the frontrunner, with some even hinting that he could be headed for an unopposed win. According to a TOI report, sources inside the MPCA say the long-standing rivalry between the Scindia camp and that of senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya no longer exists, since Jyotiraditya Scindia's move to the BJP has bridged earlier divisions. This shift, insiders believe, has cleared the way for Mahanaryaman to step into the role without facing a challenge. Currently serving as vice-president of the Gwalior cricket division, Mahanaryaman has been active in cricket administration. His leadership came into focus after he launched the Madhya Pradesh Premier League Scindia Cup two years ago, a franchise-style tournament modeled on the IPL. The tournament has completed two successful seasons, with one edition initially planned in Indore but later shifted to Gwalior. 'The league has shown that Mahanaryaman has the knack to take up bigger responsibilities," a senior cricketer told TOI. The MPCA, however, is not just about one name. The powerful faction led by former BCCI secretary and ex-MPCA president Sanjay Jagdale is expected to retain control of several important posts. Sources suggest that while the presidency could go uncontested to Mahanaryaman, the secretary's position may witness sharper competition, possibly with a candidate from Jagdale's group in the fray. The incumbent president, Abhilash Khandekar, is completing his second term, and preparations are reportedly underway to field Mahanaryaman as the preferred candidate for the top post. A senior member of the MPCA, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told TOI, 'Since everyone was in Indore, it was an opportunity to meet ahead of the election. The scenario would get clearer in the next couple of days. As of now, it is clear that one name has been decided unopposed for the post of president." If elected, Mahanaryaman Scindia would become the third member of his family to head the MPCA. His grandfather, the late Madhavrao Scindia, served as president for many years, while his father Jyotiraditya Scindia has also held the role in the past. The continuity of the Scindia family in the cricket association adds weight to the speculation that Mahanaryaman's candidacy is more than symbolic. For now, the cricket fraternity in Madhya Pradesh is watching closely. While nothing is final until the formal announcement on September 2, many within the MPCA already see the younger Scindia as the strongest contender for the president's chair. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Workers at risk as Trump's tariff threat grows, exporters push for govt support

Exporters fear large-scale job losses if higher tariffs come into force, and they are pressing the government for measures to protect workers who may be hit by US President Donald Trump 's tariff decisions. At a meeting of export promotion councils called by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations on Monday, businesses said the Centre should be asked for a package aimed at safeguarding employees, ToI reported. One of the suggestions was to push for a Covid-type relief programme, which had previously covered social security benefits along with other support that helped reduce the financial load on employers. A second proposal that came up in the discussions was to use this crisis to upgrade worker skills. In this regard, exporters are likely to demand government support of Rs 15,000 a month per worker to facilitate training and upskilling. While companies are in talks with overseas clients to find ways of coping with the looming crisis, exporters believe that orders from American buyers will stop if Trump moves ahead with plans for an additional 25% duty on Indian goods. This would take the total tariffs to 50%, making it hard for Indian suppliers to maintain their foothold in the American market. Some exporters floated the idea that the government should take on part of the additional tariff burden, but even within the community there is an acknowledgement that such a measure would be very difficult to put into effect. Live Events On its part, the government has resisted immediate action on these requests, saying it prefers to wait until the tariffs are actually imposed. Officials pointed out that the global situation is shifting rapidly, including ongoing negotiations between Russia and the United States on ways to resolve the Ukraine conflict. At the same time, exporters were reminded that shipments to the US had risen by 21% during April to July, compared with overall goods export growth of 3%. As reported earlier by TOI, this surge was mainly because Indian suppliers rushed orders in advance to beat the possibility of higher tariffs.
