From hardliner to man of masses
The latter half of 1990s witnessed two variants of 'vettinirathal' in the CPM as well as the state's social sphere — both spearheaded by VS. One was the almost brutal elimination of the powerful CITU lobby, and the other, an anti-reclamation stir against filling of paddy fields. Both instances bore the unmistakable prints of a seasoned hardliner. Yet, curiously, both episodes aptly capture Achuthanandan's transformation into a mass leader.
Realising that he was losing his iron grip over the party, VS, then a septuagenarian, chose to re-invent and re-emerge as a true champion of the masses.
His interventions, as in Mathikettan, Plachimada, Endosulphan, paddy fields, free software movement, women safety issues and anti-corruption drives went a long way in shaping the mass leader in VS.
Once he zeroed in on the socio-political path to tread, VS knew exactly how to utilise it to his utmost advantage.
He was always at the forefront, when it came to championing causes of the marginalised; all the time, cheekily aware of how well the crowd-puller-hat sat on his head. His public speeches, delivered in typical VS fashion, were instant hits.
Blatantly engaging in theatrics, VS was famous for entertaining listeners with his dramatic intonation, interspersed with throwing of hands in the air, stressing on specific words, accompanied by a liberal peppering of humorous anecdotes, raising witty queries coupled with hilarious observations et al.

CPM, DMK councillors spar over Madurai's Swachh ranking
MADURAI: DMK and CPM councillors engaged in a heated exchange after the former condemned MP Su Venkatesan's remarks about Madurai city's performance in the Swachh Survekshan ranking. Madurai has been placed last among 40 cities in the 10-lakh population category. M Jeyaram, (ward 58) said, "The union government has deliberately given low ranking for TN cities. We do not accept it, the corporation is performing well, and it is condemnable that the Madurai MP has passed adverse remarks. " He said MP Venkatesan must attend the council meetings to know about the work done by the corporation in solving civic issues. "Instead of talking in public, the MP should speak to the union government and get funds so that all work could be carried out in an expeditious manner," Jeyaram added Responding to this, T Kumaravel (ward 23) elaborated about the funds allocated by MP Venkatesan for the city development. Mayor Indirani intervened and pacified the councillors. She acknowledged that Venkatesan has brought in several development projects for the city.

Kerala University crisis deepens as VC & syndicate won't back down
T'puram: Higher education minister R Bindu's attempts to solve the administrative crisis at Kerala University seem to have failed as both vice-chancellor (VC) Mohanan Kunnummal and CPM members in the syndicate continue their fight for control. Adding a new chapter to the tussle on Tuesday, Kunnummal refused to approve a file sent by 'suspended' registrar K S Anil Kumar. The file requested Rs 10 lakh to support university union activities. It is learnt that the VC told university officials to resend the file through the registrar-in-charge Mini Kappen. However, CPM members are said to have used the 'suspended' registrar to build another case against the VC. The delay in releasing funds to the university union could give the SFI a chance to restart its strike. SFI had ended the strike suddenly after the govt tried to pacify both Kunnummal and governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Kunnummal again warned university staff not to take orders from the 'suspended' registrar, who continues to be present in his office every day despite being suspended. Left members in the syndicate and the state govt argue that Kumar's suspension ended after a syndicate meeting, held without the VC, revoked it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Shop Sale Libas Undo The VC also rejected the demand to convene a syndicate meeting. University Statute 6 (1) states that a syndicate meeting should be convened at least once in two months or at the discretion of the VC. Since there is no provision for a special syndicate meeting in university rules, the VC has taken the stand that it would be sufficient to convene the next syndicate meeting by Sept 6. The last meeting was held on July 6. Despite Kunnummal's repeated instructions, university officers have not made arrangements for the acting registrar to access the file link. The ongoing administrative crisis at Kerala University continues as both sides refuse to back down and tensions remain high on campus.

Will take up issues of apple growers with Centre: Sukhu
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister on Tuesday assured that no felling of fruit trees would be allowed after the Supreme Court's stay order and directed the forest department to conduct an inquiry into reports of apple trees being axed in Karsog and Kullu valleys after the apex court's directive on Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After listening to the grievance of a delegation of the 'Seb Utpadak Sangh', led by CPM leader and former MLA Rakesh Singha, the CM said he would raise the issue with the Union minister of environment, forests and climate change. The state govt would formulate a policy in consultation with all stakeholders to address the concerns of apple growers, he said. Earlier in the morning, 'Seb Utpadak Sangh' members from across the state gathered outside the state secretariat in Shimla and carried out a massive protest in the rain, seeking the state govt's attention to pending demands, including five bigha land for landless farmers. Later, the CM listened to a delegation of protesting apple growers and added their demands would be considered sympathetically, highlighting the state govt had already approached the Supreme Court seeking relief for them. Sukhu said the state urged the central govt to allow the allocation of one to five bighas of land for the rehabilitation of disaster-affected families who were rendered landless. With 68% of the state under forest cover, the CM emphasized the need to relax forest norms to facilitate rehabilitation. All BJP MPs from Himachal were requested to pursue this matter with the central govt, he added. Himachal Pradesh revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi also assured support to apple growers and said the state govt would leave no stone unturned in helping them. He said relief could also be considered under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, as was done in the case of Pong dam oustees. Former Shimla mayor Sanjay Chauhan and CPM leader Kuldeep Singh Tanwar were also present during the meeting.
