Socceroos coaching staff delighted with comeback of defender Alessandro Circati

News.com.au21-05-2025

Alessandro Circati's successful return for his Italian club Parma has the 21-year-old defender on the verge of a Socceroos recall for next month's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Saudi Arabia.
Socceroos coaching staff were watching closely on Monday morning (AEDT) when Circati played his first game since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in September last year.
Despite Circati having been named in Parma's match-day squad for more than a month, Monday's match against Serie A leaders Napoli was his first game back in action.
And he didn't disappoint, playing the full match and helping Parma keep a clean sheet in a 0-0 home draw.
'It showed … that he was able to play out comfortably 90 minutes against a side that's challenging for the title, so it means that he's done his work, he's been due diligent, and that he's prepared and done his rehab to a level that's expected when you play in those leagues,' Socceroos assistant coach Hayden Foxe said.
'We know what he's been doing. He's been working ever so hard, doing two or three sessions a day, working with the medical team very closely.
'It's no surprise now that when he comes back, he can play a (full match) and do it comfortably physically, mentally and tactically.'
Circati seems set for more game time in Parma's final match of the season this Monday (AEST) against Atalanta.
'Every case is different. You can't say that he needs to play a certain amount of games before he can get called in or not called in to the national team,' Foxe said.
'We'll see how he goes again this weekend, and then we'll see the decision that's made if he gets selected or not selected for the June camp.'

Capped four times, Circati's availability is timely given the Socceroos will again be without injured centre-backs Harry Souttar and Hayden Matthews for the games against Japan (June 5, Perth) and Saudi Arabia (June 11 AEST, Jeddah).
The Socceroos are in second spot – seven points behind Japan and three points ahead of the third-placed Saudis – in Group C in the third round of AFC World Cup qualifiers.
Should they remain in the top two after next month's matches, the Australians will guarantee themselves a place at next year's World Cup.
Australia's squad is set to be named next week, with a host of established and fringe players at a training camp in the United Arab Emirates.
'This camp is about how we can build some resilience, strength and robustness for these two games coming up against Japan and Saudi Arabia,' Foxe said.
'(Qualification) is in our hands. The boys should be confident. Expectations of the boys will be to qualify directly.'

Arzani keeps focus on World Cup as European move looms

Not easily or by coincidence has Daniel Arzani earned a second shot with the Socceroos. And the Melbourne Victory A-League Men star won't squander his World Cup hopes as he weighs up chasing his European dream again. Arzani is bent on helping Australia rubber stamp their path to the 2026 World Cup with a win over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Wednesday (AEST). After their heroic 1-0 win over Japan in Perth last week, only a highly improbable loss by five goals or more would condemn the Socceroos to ceding second spot and automatic qualification to the Saudis. Arzani is backing himself to prove his mettle after working his way back to the national team. "There's always been a little bit of self-doubt there, especially after the way things unfolded the last few years," Arzani said on Sunday. "It changes very quickly - up and down, up and down; positive, negative. "I'm happy to be in the situation that I'm in now. It hasn't come by easily, nor by coincidence. "I've worked really hard to be here, and it's been a slow process. "I feel like now I've got a good base to really show what I can do and to hopefully go even further." Arzani had lit up the 2018 World Cup for the Socceroos at the tender age of 19. Now 26, the winger is reasserting his case in the national team after losing time to injuries and ill-fated stints in Europe. "It's actually a little bit more special, because for the first time, I'm involved in the qualification process as well," Arzani said. "Being around such a good group of lads, really feeling that connection, everyone working towards one common goal, is always a special feeling. "It's something that I never experienced before, a real eye opener, and one that I'm really enjoying." Off-contract at Victory, Arzani is reportedly weighing a move to Scottish Premiership club Hearts. He is no stranger to the Scottish league, having played for Celtic on a two-year loan from Manchester City in 2018. But his stint was far from ideal, with the then 19-year-old tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on debut. Arzani is well aware he'll need regular game time at club level ahead of the 2026 tournament as he weighs up a potential move. "Any of the boys that are looking to move are off contract. I think that thought process will be in their head," Arzani said. "It's a big deal, a World Cup. It's massive. Everyone wants to be a part of it. It's going to be very competitive. "We know we've got a lot of talent as well coming out of Australia, so I think it's definitely important that if I go, I'll be playing weekly."

Socceroos playmaker Daniel Arzani desperate to make right call about his club future

Daniel Arzani's desire to represent Australia at another FIFA World Cup has him desperate to ensure he makes the right choice about where he plays his club football next season. Arzani and the Socceroos can smell 2026 World Cup qualification ahead of their clash against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Wednesday morning (AEST). To have any chance of denying Australia a guaranteed World Cup spot from a top-two finish in Group C of the AFC's third round of qualifiers, the Saudis must score a minimum of five goals against the Socceroos, who beat Japan 1-0 in Perth last Thursday night. 'The job isn't done yet … and were also here representing Australia, which is not a small deal,' Arzani said from Jeddah on Sunday in stressing that the Socceroos weren't going to take a complacent attitude into the match. However, with the Saudis needing a miracle to claim second spot in Group C ahead of Australia, Arzani has been able to dream of going to another World Cup after playing at the tournament as a teenager in 2018 in Russia. It's why the Melbourne Victory star – who has been linked with a move to Scottish club Hearts – is taking his time deciding on whether to remain in the A-League next season or head overseas. The 26-year-old playmaker has been able to force his way back into the Socceroos squad on the back of good form and regular football for the Victory. With his Victory contract expiring this month, Arzani now must weigh up the gamble of trying his luck overseas or instead taking the perhaps safer option of signing a new deal with the Melbourne club, knowing that Socceroos coach Tony Popovic hasn't been afraid to pick A-League players since his appointment in September last year. 'Any of the boys that are looking to move or who are off contract, that thought process will be in their head,' Arzani said. 'It's a big deal the World Cup. It's massive. Everyone wants to be a part of it. 'It's going to be very competitive (for selection). We know we've got a lot of talent as well coming out of Australia, so it's definitely important that if I go somewhere (abroad), that I'll be playing week in, week out. 'I'm not sure what I'm doing yet, what direction I'm heading in, but that's definitely part of the equation. It's something that I'll consider. for sure.' Feeling fresh after a long flight. ðŸ' @mitchduke8 says the boys have acclimatised well and are raring to go after their first session in Jeddah. 🇸🇦 v 🇦🇰 - 11.6.25, 4:15am AEST ðŸ'±ðŸ'»ðŸ'°: Paramount+ ðŸ'»: ABC Radio via the ABC Listen App #Socceroos #KSAvAUS — Subway Socceroos (@Socceroos) June 8, 2025 Arzani said being chosen for the Socceroos' 2026 World Cup squad, should Australia qualify, would be 'a little bit more special' than his 2018 selection because this time he would have been involving in the qualifying campaign, which he wasn't before the tournament seven years ago. 'Being around such a good group of lads and really feeling that connection with everyone working towards one common goal is always a special feeling,' he said. 'You see the stuff that happens behind the scenes and the stresses, the pressures and everything involved with qualifying for a World Cup. 'It's such a massive deal, and it's something that I never experienced before. It has been a real eye-opener, and one that I'm really enjoying.'
