Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) and the Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) have decided to work together to promote Sabah's small and medium enterprise (SME) products to China and broader international markets. SCCC President Datuk Frankie Liew and Deputy President Brett Chua said this following a courtesy visit and discussion with DIDR Director Siti Noor Aini Abdullah. Liew said the SCCC briefed the Director on its upcoming trade promotion activities, including participation in the 14th China Henan Investment and Trade Fair (CHITF), scheduled to take place in Zhengzhou from Sept 26 to 28 as well as the planned 2025 Malaysia (Sabah) – China Business Summit to be held in Sabah in November. 'We hope DIDR will help encourage and support local SMEs and entrepreneurs to bring Sabah-made specialty and native products to markets such as Zhengzhou. 'At the same time, we aim to increase international awareness of Sabah's products and potential,' said Liew. The Henan fair emphasises two-way openness, domestic-international linkages, and integration of investment, trade, and consumption. It serves the construction of a unified national market and the dual domestic-international circulation system. A wide range of economic and trade exchange activities will be held, including industry matchmaking, project negotiations, exhibitions, and international/regional cooperation. 'The CHITF is the only state-approved economic and trade event hosted by the Henan Provincial Government. Having been successfully held 14 times, it is the largest, most prestigious, and most influential international trade event in Henan.' Liew said the 14th CHITF attracted high-level delegations from 24 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) across China and 29,000 business delegates from 43 countries and regions. 'The event included an opening ceremony, a high-level forum on openness, and more than 20 trade-related activities. It featured comprehensive and specialized exhibition zones covering a total area of 60,000 square meters, with over 600 top domestic and international enterprises showcasing their products — setting new records in exhibitor quality, exhibit space, and product diversity.' The planned exhibition area will be about 65,000 square meters, comprising general and specialized zones such as provincial showcases, international/domestic cooperation areas, and zones for new energy vehicles, food, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, digital economy, new retail, premium export goods, and imported specialty products. SCCC participated in last year's Sabah–China Expo, organised by the Ministry of Industrial Development, which received an overwhelming response. This year, the Chamber plans to collaborate with other trade associations and organizations to host a similar event – the 2025 Malaysia (Sabah)–China Business Summit, providing a platform for local specialty agricultural and native products to enter international markets. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fadillah: Malaysia could go nuclear within 10 years, if public gives green light

KUCHING, Aug 3 — The government is studying the possibility of implementing nuclear energy projects in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah due to the high demand for stable energy in both regions, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), said the suitability of locations near water sources such as rivers, seas or large lakes was a key consideration in the ongoing feasibility study for nuclear plant cooling systems. 'For Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, nuclear projects are viable because what we need now is a constant energy source. 'In Sarawak, there is no issue because hydropower already contributes almost 70 per cent, while in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, hydropower resources are not as abundant due to their heavier reliance on gas and diesel, which are still based on non-clean sources,' he told reporters after officiating the MUSCS Pickleball Arena here today. He said no final decisions had been made regarding the technology, location or capacity to be used, as the government was still conducting a comprehensive study coordinated by MyPower Corporation, the implementing agency of the National Nuclear Energy Programme. Fadillah said in addition to technical requirements, the study would also examine the most suitable technology, development of local expertise, safety aspects, environmental impact, and the overall financing capability of the project. 'All of these aspects must be carefully assessed. Only when we are satisfied and the public accepts the use of nuclear energy will we proceed to finalise the implementation… our projection is that the earliest it could be implemented is within the next 10 years,' he said. He added that the government was also exploring new technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and was planning several working visits abroad to identify the best, safest, and most cost-effective technologies for Malaysia. 'That's why I visited Russia and France, and God willing, I will also visit South Korea, Japan, China, and finally the United States,' he said. Yesterday, PETRA said in a statement that nuclear energy development was being studied as a clean, stable and competitive energy source for Malaysia's future, with a gradual approach based on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines. — Bernama

Coming soon: Domestic Trade Ministry to crack down on middlemen with new price and supply tracker

PENAMPANG, Aug 3 — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) will develop a Price and Supply Repository System during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Its minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, said the system would enable the government to monitor prices and supply comprehensively from producers and wholesalers to retailers and consumers. 'With this supply and pricing data chain, the government can monitor more effectively and detect manipulation by middlemen who inflate prices. 'KPDN will collaborate with various ministries, including the Economy Ministry and the Finance Ministry,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the Madani Nationhood Seminar organised by Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) here today. Armizan said the system will not only strengthen the food supply chain but also help detect exactly where price hikes or manipulation occur within the distribution process. At the same time, a study on the factors behind price differences in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan was launched this year. A separate Price Stability Committee has been established for each state. He said that the committee, co-chaired by himself and Sabah Minister of Community Development and People's Well-being, Datuk James Ratib, will evaluate five key items in Sabah, including chicken prices. Armizan also said a preliminary report had already been presented by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for Sabah and Labuan, while Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is conducting the study for Sarawak. 'UMS has proposed five essential items that can be addressed in the short term to solve the issue. We will examine their initial findings before proceeding to the second phase of the study,' he said. — Bernama

13MP: RM2 bln flood mitigation works in Kuching to start early next year, says Fadillah

KUCHING (Aug 2): A large-scale RM2 billion flood mitigation project in Kuching City is set to be tendered this year, with physical implementation expected to begin next year, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the project comprises three main components — the construction of a canal, a bridge, and a new barrage at Sungai Salak — aimed at controlling water overflow and preventing saltwater intrusion from the sea during high tides. 'Two initial packages of the project have already been approved under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), although they do not include the construction of the barrage. 'For the full project, now under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), it will involve all three packages including the barrage and is expected to be tendered this year. Physical implementation is anticipated to commence next year. 'This is the largest allocation under 13MP hoped for by Sarawak,' he said when speaking to reporters after officiating the opening of the HE Clinic Kuching branch here today. Fadillah explained that the barrage will be built at the end of Sungai Salak to prevent saltwater intrusion and to control high tides by closing the barrage gates when necessary. Commenting on the 13MP announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday, he said this is among the projects to be implemented under the plan. He also noted that several other infrastructure projects will continue under 13MP, such as the extension of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah, the Trans Borneo project in Sarawak, and the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road. 'There are also other infrastructure projects that will proceed under 13MP, including the Pan Borneo Highway extension in Sabah, the Trans Borneo project in Sarawak, and the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road, all of which have already been allocated funding. 'In addition, development in border areas between Malaysia and Indonesia, and Malaysia and Brunei, will also be prioritised, including upgrading Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes, road networks, and other supporting facilities,' he added. Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, said several other mitigation projects, such as erosion control in Sibu, Miri, and several coastal areas, have been identified, with details to be announced once next year's budget estimates are finalised. Meanwhile, various infrastructure and public facility projects involving flood mitigation and improved road accessibility are among the people-centric initiatives under 13MP for the 2026–2030 period. During the tabling in the Dewan Rakyat on July 31, Anwar stated that RM20 billion has been allocated to implement 103 Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) projects to reduce the risks and impacts of such disasters. Among the RTB projects to be implemented are those at Sungai Langat and Sungai Buloh in Selangor; Sungai Golok in Kelantan; Sungai Gemencheh in Negeri Sembilan; Sungai Baru in Melaka; the Johor and Muar River Basins in Johor; the Pahang River Basin; and Kuching City. 13MP fadillah yusof flood mitigation project Kuching lead
