SAFVA seeks legal clarity, fair deal for Sabah creatives on Borneo.TV

Published on: Thursday, July 10, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 10, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Film and Visual Association (SAFVA) has raised critical legal concerns over operations, despite welcoming the state-backed platform's aim to promote local talent. SAFVA Legal Advisor Yong Yit Jee questioned whether income from Sabah-made content is being fairly channeled back to the state, given that is owned by a Peninsular-based company. 'We want transparency on how revenue is allocated .Sabah's creative output must benefit Sabah,' he said. He also called for clear protection of local artists' intellectual property and royalties. 'There must be explicit terms ensuring Sabah talents receive fair compensation and retain rights over their work.' Yong warned that IB Media Consultant Works Sdn Bhd, which operates must confirm its broadcasting licenses and compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). 'Without proper licensing, all parties involved risk legal exposure. The same applies if PDPA compliance is not met,' he stressed. SAFVA further emphasized the need for consent from indigenous communities before featuring cultural content. 'Free, Prior, and Informed Consent is non-negotiable when indigenous identity is involved,' he said. The association is also calling for the public release of the agreement between the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Secretariat and IB Media, urging full transparency. 'We need to see if this deal truly protects local creatives,' Yong said, adding that SAFVA seeks a joint dialogue with SMJ, IB Media, and other stakeholders to address these concerns constructively. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah China Chamber of Commerce and Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Research to tap China marts

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: Datuk Frankie Liew (right) presents a souvenir to Director of the Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Research, Siti Noor Aini Abdullah (centre). Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) and the Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) have decided to work together to promote Sabah's small and medium enterprise (SME) products to China and broader international markets. SCCC President Datuk Frankie Liew and Deputy President Brett Chua said this following a courtesy visit and discussion with DIDR Director Siti Noor Aini Abdullah. Liew said the SCCC briefed the Director on its upcoming trade promotion activities, including participation in the 14th China Henan Investment and Trade Fair (CHITF), scheduled to take place in Zhengzhou from Sept 26 to 28 as well as the planned 2025 Malaysia (Sabah) – China Business Summit to be held in Sabah in November. 'We hope DIDR will help encourage and support local SMEs and entrepreneurs to bring Sabah-made specialty and native products to markets such as Zhengzhou. 'At the same time, we aim to increase international awareness of Sabah's products and potential,' said Liew. The Henan fair emphasises two-way openness, domestic-international linkages, and integration of investment, trade, and consumption. It serves the construction of a unified national market and the dual domestic-international circulation system. A wide range of economic and trade exchange activities will be held, including industry matchmaking, project negotiations, exhibitions, and international/regional cooperation. 'The CHITF is the only state-approved economic and trade event hosted by the Henan Provincial Government. Having been successfully held 14 times, it is the largest, most prestigious, and most influential international trade event in Henan.' Liew said the 14th CHITF attracted high-level delegations from 24 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities) across China and 29,000 business delegates from 43 countries and regions. 'The event included an opening ceremony, a high-level forum on openness, and more than 20 trade-related activities. It featured comprehensive and specialized exhibition zones covering a total area of 60,000 square meters, with over 600 top domestic and international enterprises showcasing their products — setting new records in exhibitor quality, exhibit space, and product diversity.' The planned exhibition area will be about 65,000 square meters, comprising general and specialized zones such as provincial showcases, international/domestic cooperation areas, and zones for new energy vehicles, food, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, digital economy, new retail, premium export goods, and imported specialty products. SCCC participated in last year's Sabah–China Expo, organised by the Ministry of Industrial Development, which received an overwhelming response. This year, the Chamber plans to collaborate with other trade associations and organizations to host a similar event – the 2025 Malaysia (Sabah)–China Business Summit, providing a platform for local specialty agricultural and native products to enter international markets. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? TikTok Shop, Tekun Nasional celebrate local entrepreneurs with Sabah carnival

KOTA BELUD: TikTok Shop marked the second year of its partnership with Tekun Nasional at the Karnival Tekun Madani, reinforcing its commitment to empower local entrepreneurs through digital transformation. The carnival, held from May 15 to 17 at Dewan Kadamaian Square, held a range of digital-first activities aimed at promoting Sabah-made products and homegrown talents. Among the key attractions were TikTok Shop's signature LIVE Studio, interactive LIVE Selling Kiosk, and game segments that drew strong interest from visitors. DIGITAL SUPPORT FOR ENTREPRENEURS One of the main highlights was the TikTok Shop x Tekun Nasional Award Ceremony, which celebrated 80 Sabahan entrepreneurs who completed the Promosi Perniagaan Online (POP) workshop series. Five participants were recognised for their outstanding performance in applying digital tools to grow their businesses online. In its bid to support the Malaysian government's efforts to grow the economy and reduce poverty, TikTok Shop continues to spotlight Sabahan creators and small businesses on its platform, offering greater online visibility. This includes investments such as the TikTok Shop Live Hub in Penampang, a purpose-built studio launched on Feb 16 by Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick to help local sellers reduce costs and diversify their sales channels. To date, more than 100 entrepreneurs have used the facility, producing over 600 hours of livestream content and boosting their reach and sales capabilities. ENCOURAGING SUCCESS STORIES The collaboration with Tekun Nasional has yielded strong results. Through the #JomLokal campaign, traditional sellers in Sabah have seen over 200 per cent revenue growth, contributing to a seven-figure sales milestone. Year–on-year, revenue in the state rose by 500 per cent. Since January, 80 entrepreneurs from Sabah have been mentored under the initiative, promoting a diverse range of locally produced items from agriculture and food to crafts, personal care and fashion. Within just 60 days of the Live Hub's launch, Sabahan sellers recorded more than 8 million views and sold over 10,000 local products, underscoring growing interest from online audiences and the potential of digital platforms to boost rural entrepreneurship. The Kota Belud event drew a highly-positive response from the local community, with strong turnout and participation. TikTok Shop will continue this momentum in other regions, with Johor set to host the next Live Hub as part of ongoing efforts to equip local entrepreneurs with digital tools and training. Those interested in digital entrepreneurship can learn more about #JomLokal at this website, and can also visit the ongoing Karnival Tekun Madani in Kota Belud until May 17.
