Does your dog or cat have allergies? Common symptoms and what you can do to help

About five years ago, Gail Friedman noticed her Parson Russell Terrier was constantly licking his paws and seemed extremely uncomfortable.
'The poor dog. I would put baby socks on his feet so that he wouldn't lick them or bite at them,' said Friedman, who lives in Oak Brook, in the US state of Illinois. 'I was constantly changing the socks, washing his feet a lot. Nothing worked.'
It turned out her canine companion, Mr Friedman, had allergies.
Allergies are a common and tricky problem in pets. They are caused by various things such as pollen, dust, mould, chemicals and food. But veterinarians say there are several ways to ease animals' suffering.

What sorts of allergies do dogs and cats get?
Allergies happen when the immune system overreacts to a foreign substance. Cats and dogs react to many of the same things that people do, as well as pests like fleas.

5 dog food buying tips to ensure the best nutrition for your pet given its breed and size

Choosing your dog's food can feel overwhelming because of the array of options available, all claiming to be the best on the market. Wading through these choices to find a brand that is healthy, affordable and appealing to your pet can be frustrating. The American Kennel Club offers tips on how to choose the best dog food for your pet. Nutritional needs It is important to remember that not every dog has the same nutritional needs. Large dogs and puppies have different nutritional requirements from small dogs and puppies. The nutritional needs of a puppy are different from an adult, which is why it's a good idea to give them a puppy formula or an 'all life stages' food. There are a lot of claims surrounding dog food, so check that nutritional information is supported by a credible source. Photo: Shutterstock Myths and misinformation The internet is full of claims about dog nutrition with scientific evidence to back them up. While doing your research, check to see if the information is supported by a credible source, like a vet, canine nutritionist or scientific study. Dog food labels

Jon Hamm has earned a reputation for playing renegade characters – the kind of guys who seem perfectly put together and in control, yet are always just one misstep away from unravelling. Case in point: his latest hit, the Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors. Hamm stars as Andrew 'Coop' Cooper, a hedge fund manager who, after losing his job and torpedoing his career, turns to stealing from his wealthy friends and neighbours to keep up his lavish lifestyle. His loot of choice? High-priced, status symbol items – including some seriously coveted watches, like a Patek Philippe Nautilus with an ice-blue dial, which boasts a resale value of about US$169,000. Off-screen, Hamm has been spotted wearing a few steal-worthy timepieces of his own at red carpet events and media appearances. Here's a look at some of the best luxury watches Jon Hamm has been known to wear – presumably all acquired the old-fashioned way, with a receipt and/or full consent. Vacheron Constantin Historique 222 The Vacheron Constantin Historique 222. Photo: Handout The actor sparked serious buzz among watch lovers earlier this year when he showed up at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party wearing a yellow-gold Vacheron Constantin 222, which GQ referred to as the 'big, bold bad boy of high-end sports watches'. One of the most sought-after reissues in recent memory, it oozes the vintage charm of the original 222, which was introduced in 1977 to celebrate Vacheron's 222nd anniversary. After it was discontinued in the mid-80s, it became a rare collector's grail. The modern version, relaunched in 2022 as the Historiques 222, pays faithful tribute to the original, right down to the 37mm case and integrated bracelet – though it now houses a modern in-house movement. With its throwback styling and quietly confident presence, it's no surprise the piece looks right at home on the wrist of the man who played super-slick ad exec Don Draper in Mad Men. Meet George and Amal Clooney's glamorous niece, Mia Hamiyeh: she was a flower girl at the Clooneys' 2014 wedding in Venice and has since joined the couple on red carpets wearing Giambattista Valli

George Clooney and his wife Amal are no strangers to life in the limelight. But when the celebrity couple hit New York for the Clooney Foundation for Justice's The Albies in October, someone else stole the show. That person was Mia Hamiyeh, Clooney's niece. Standing almost as tall as her aunt, the young woman, who turns 23 this year, made a glamorous appearance in a red dress with a sweetheart neckline, silver heels and a gold clutch – and was almost unrecognisable from the first time she appeared in public. Back in 2015, when she was only 13, Hamiyeh joined the Clooneys on the red carpet for the premiere of Tomorrowland wearing Giambattista Valli, flats and braces on her teeth. That cheerful little girl is now following in her aunt's footsteps, working as a legal intern at the Clooney Foundation for Justice. So, what else do we know about Mia Hamiyeh? Who are her parents? Mia Hamiyeh's mum, Tala Alamuddin, is Amal Clooney's sister. Photo: @talaalamuddin/Instagram Advertisement Hamiyeh is the daughter of Amal Clooney's sister Tala Alamuddin and her ex-husband, Nagi Hamiyeh. She was born in 2002. Her mother is a style influencer and the founder of Totally Tala, a Singapore-based fashion label that focuses on sustainability and ethical production. Her father is a businessman. She has three siblings – twins Jad and Sari Hamiyeh, and another brother whose name has not been disclosed. Alamuddin married Italian businessman Nico Le Tallec after her split from Hamiyeh. What are her educational qualifications? Mia Hamiyeh is training to be a lawyer. Photo: @ericdavidbeauty/Instagram Mia Hamiyeh has a law degree from SOAS University of London and is currently qualifying as a lawyer through Leeds' BPP Law School. Before working with the Clooney Foundation for Justice, she was a Junior Fellow at the Center for International Governance and Dispute Resolution at King's College London, served as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and was a legal intern at the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She was the flower girl at the Clooneys' wedding George and Amal Clooney on their wedding day in Italy, in 2014. Photo: @ George and Amal Clooney's 2014 Italian wedding was a star-studded affair, and on the big day, Hamiyeh was her aunt's flower girl. She was also tasked with helping the bride with the train of her Oscar de la Renta wedding dress, but given how heavy it was, she needed a hand from her mum.
