MP questions Sabah's energy future after pipeline suspension

Kuala Lumpur: The suspension of a key section of the Kimanis-Bintulu gas pipeline has sparked debate in Parliament, with Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Madius Tangau questioning potential financial losses for Petronas and the broader implications for Sabah's energy security. During last Thursday's Dewan Rakyat session, Madius pressed the Prime Minister to disclose how much Petronas has lost since operations were halted on the 500-kilometre pipeline linking Kimanis, Sabah, to Bintulu, Sarawak.
Advertisement He also questioned why the project was pursued despite known geotechnical risks, reiterating longstanding objections from his party, Upko. Madius said Upko had opposed the pipeline from the start, warning it would divert Sabah's gas resources and undermine the state's ability to meet local electricity needs. After the 12th General Election, Upko had made cancellation of the pipeline a condition of its support for the fifth Prime Minister. The party proposed rerouting the project through Sandakan or Lahad Datu to prioritise domestic gas use, with surplus supply directed to support petrochemical development at the POIC Lahad Datu. However, the original route was retained. Adding to the controversy, Madius revealed that Sabah's promised 25 per cent equity in the Bintulu LNG project was not a free stake as initially assumed. Responding to the concerns, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said clarified that only the Sarawak segment — covering Lawas, Limbang, Miri, and Bintulu — has been suspended. Pipeline operations within Sabah remain active. Azalina explained the suspension was prompted by technical and safety assessments, which revealed significant geotechnical risks, including unstable terrain and recurring land movement threatening the structural integrity of the pipeline. 'Public safety is a priority,' she said, adding that Petronas remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted energy supply via alternative, safer routes. She noted the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline, launched in 2011, was based on feasibility studies evaluating safety, cost, and commercial viability. However, a series of pipeline failures between 2014 and 2022, coupled with worsening land instability, led to the partial suspension. FB page apologises for linking Sabah minister to Zara case

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The administrator of a Facebook page named Sabahan News Online has apologised to Sabah minister Arifin Arif for linking him to the case involving Zara Qairina Mahathir, who died last month. In a Facebook post, the admin said it retracted every statement it had made against Arifin related to the case, adding that the state science, technology and innovation minister was a 'victim of misunderstanding all this while'. It also apologised for linking Sabah governor Musa Aman to the case through Arifin, who is Musa's son-in-law. 'We wholeheartedly apologise and will make this post a point of reference for the public so that all parties would understand (that Arifin is not linked to the case in any way). 'Every effort and attempt to link the governor and others to the case was a mistake and we deeply regret doing so,' it said. It also expressed hope that this would alleviate the unhappiness of netizens with the page for making the allegations. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day. Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying. This morning, five teenage girls claimed trial in the children's court in Kota Kinabalu to uttering abusive words against the victim which could have caused her distress.

Ex-Sabah minister fails to secure retrial of forgery case

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA: Convicted former Sabah minister Peter Anthony today failed in his bid to secure a retrial of his forgery charge after the Court of Appeal dismissed his application for a review, filed on March 14. Justice Azman Abdullah, chairing a three-judge panel, said there was no failure of justice regarding a police report lodged by prosecution witness Shukur Din, which was argued extensively in the final appeal last year. Advertisement '(Peter) was given the right to be heard. The application for review is rejected. 'The previous appeal bench's failure to include (Shukur's police report as fresh evidence) in its broad grounds does not amount to a failure of justice,' he said. Also on the panel hearing the review application were Justices Noorin Badarudin and Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz. On March 4, a Court of Appeal panel comprising Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin delivered its broad oral grounds of judgment on Peter's appeal. The full judgment, written by Zaini and made available to parties early this week, explained why the fresh evidence did not help to exonerate Peter. Shukur had alleged that a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigating officer concocted the last paragraph of his police report to implicate Peter in using Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to mislead then prime minister Najib Razak into securing a contract. Peter contended that Shukur's police report on Aug 9, 2018 exonerated him. He said the non-disclosure of the evidence at trial had prejudiced him. The former state minister in the Warisan-led Sabah government between 2018 and 2020 contended that he was deprived of the right to a fair trial by not being able to cross-examine Shukur on the report. The Court of Appeal last year granted Peter's application to admit Shukur's police report as additional evidence, noting that he had only come across it through a friend. The former Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat president's review application had sought to set aside the Court of Appeal's final ruling convicting him of the offence, and for the ordering of a retrial. Earlier today, lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, appearing for Peter, told the court that the 16-page broad grounds made no reference to the fresh evidence admitted.
