Raighar nursing student's death: BJD to observe bandh today

UMERKOTE/BHUBANESWAR: The BJD has called a 12-hour bandh in Raighar block of Nabarangpur district on Monday in protest against the death of the 21-year-old nursing student at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. The woman had allegedly consumed poison on July 17 following circulation of her private photos by a youth, who is said to have been in a one-sided love with her. She died during treatment at AIIMS-BBS on Saturday. Addressing the media on Sunday, BJD general secretary and former Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi remarked that the BJP government has failed to protect women in the state. He further sought resignation of deputy chief minister-cum-Women and Child Development minister Pravati Parida in this connection, and compensation of Rs 1 crore for the deceased's family. Media coordinator Priyabrata Majhi said the residents of Raighar block in Nabarangpur district have been requested to extend full support to the hartal. Government and private institutions, shops, markets, transport, schools and colleges have been requested to support the bandh. He, however, added that emergency services will not be disrupted during the strike. The woman's body is expected to reach her native village Dumurimunda by midnight. Raighar IIC Raghunath Majhi said, 'Police are on alert for maintenance of law and order. Patrolling has been tightened and more police forces will be deployed in sensitive areas.'

Malnutrition shadow on WCD minister Nirmala Bhuria's backyard Malwa-Nimar

Bhopal: Fresh data from the Centre has placed three districts from the state's Malwa-Nimar belt, home turf of state women and child development minister Nirmala Bhuria, among the 10 worst-affected in the country for child malnutrition. Figures tabled in the Lok Sabha on July 25 show that 42.54% of children attending anganwadis in Dhar are underweight, ranking it third in the country. Khargone (formerly West Nimar) follows with 36.19%, and Barwani with 36.04%. The findings underscore a grim irony: the state's WCD minister hails from this very region. Bhuria, who is from Petlawad in Jhabua district, leads the state's nutrition drive while the crisis remains most acute in her own political backyard. Nationally, Nandurbar in Maharashtra tops the list with 48.26% underweight children, followed by West Singhbhum in Jharkhand (44.80%). Dhar ranks third, with Khargone and Barwani also in the top 10. The data highlights Madhya Pradesh's disproportionate share of the national malnutrition burden. In the same reply to a question by Bihar MP Sudama Prasad, Union minister of state for WCD Savitri Thakur detailed funds released under Mission Poshan 2.0. Madhya Pradesh received Rs 4,364.69 crore between 2021-22 and 2024-25. When contacted, Bhuria said: "We are regularly monitoring the data and initiating several innovative interventions. As a pilot in Jhabua district, we launched a drive named 'Motihai' (Badi Maa in the local language). At every anganwadi, a woman was deployed to massage the kids and provide traditional nutrition. We prepared files for each child who needed care, and even children migrating with their parents are being tracked. This innovation has given very good results in Jhabua. We will be initiating such initiatives in other districts like Dhar, Khargone, Barwani, and wherever such interventions are required." Breastfeeding centres to be set up in railway stations, bus stands in Odisha: DyCM

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up breastfeeding centres in various public places, including railway stations and bus stands, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said here on Wednesday. "We will open dedicated centres for breastfeeding in public places. In the railway stations, a lady attendant will be deployed at the breastfeeding centre so that lactating mothers can breastfeed their babies in a women-friendly atmosphere," Parida told media persons after gracing the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 here. The DyCM, who is in charge of Women and Child Development Department , said there is an emotional and physical bond between mother and child. Breastfeeding brings the child closer to the mother's heart, she said. She stressed the significant health benefits of breastfeeding, both for mothers and infants, including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers in women and improved mental well-being for both during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding. Parida called upon all stakeholders to increase the rate of breastfeeding centres across Odisha and encouraged collective societal responsibility in promoting breastfeeding. She virtually inaugurated the first public breastfeeding room at the office of the Odisha State Commission for Women. The deputy chief minister recommended that similar breastfeeding spaces should be established in all public and private institutions across the state to support working and lactating mothers. During the event, 'Lok Kalyan' - an online web link form for NGO registration - was officially launched by Parida. PTI
