Breastfeeding centres to be set up in railway stations, bus stands in Odisha: DyCM
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will set up breastfeeding centres in various public places, including railway stations and bus stands, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said here on Wednesday. "We will open dedicated centres for breastfeeding in public places. In the railway stations, a lady attendant will be deployed at the breastfeeding centre so that lactating mothers can breastfeed their babies in a women-friendly atmosphere," Parida told media persons after gracing the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 here. The DyCM, who is in charge of Women and Child Development Department , said there is an emotional and physical bond between mother and child. Breastfeeding brings the child closer to the mother's heart, she said. She stressed the significant health benefits of breastfeeding, both for mothers and infants, including reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers in women and improved mental well-being for both during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding. Parida called upon all stakeholders to increase the rate of breastfeeding centres across Odisha and encouraged collective societal responsibility in promoting breastfeeding. She virtually inaugurated the first public breastfeeding room at the office of the Odisha State Commission for Women. The deputy chief minister recommended that similar breastfeeding spaces should be established in all public and private institutions across the state to support working and lactating mothers. During the event, 'Lok Kalyan' - an online web link form for NGO registration - was officially launched by Parida. PTI

Odisha's first breastfeeding centre opens in capital
BHUBANESWAR: Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the state's first public breastfeeding centre at the Odisha State Commission for Women during the state-level celebration of World Breastfeeding Week on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Parida said the state government will set up similar centres at railway stations, bus stands, markets and other public places that are frequented by women. 'These centres will provide a safe and peaceful space where new mothers can nurse their children comfortably in complete privacy,' said the deputy CM who is also the Women and Child Development (WCD) minister. In railway stations, particularly, a female attendant will be deployed at each station to assist nursing mothers, she informed. Parida further added that the government also has plans to open breastfeeding centres at all its offices and other public service centres where woman visit regularly for grievance redressal. Stating that breastfeeding is not just beneficial for newborns but also the new mothers, the deputy CM said it has significant health benefits like reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women and improved mental well-being for both mother and child.

First public breastfeeding room inaugurated in city
Bhubaneswar: Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday inaugurated the first public breastfeeding room at the Odisha State Commission for Women office here. At the state-level event marking World Breastfeeding Week 2025, she urged all public and private institutions to set up similar spaces to support working and lactating mothers. Parida, who heads the women and child development (WCD) department, emphasised the need for collective societal efforts to promote breastfeeding. She called upon all stakeholders to increase the number of breastfeeding centres across the state. On the occasion, she also launched Lok Kalyan, an online, web-based NGO registration platform developed by the Odisha State Social Welfare Board under the WCD Department. The platform aims to improve transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in NGO operations across the state.

Shovana appointed Odisha SCW chief
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Tuesday appointed BJP leader Shovana Mohanty as the new chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW). The post of chairperson was lying vacant following the removal of former chairperson Minati Behera and four other members of the commission in November 2024. 'In pursuance of Section-3(1) and Section-3(2) (b) of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993, the State government have been pleased to appoint Smt. Shovana Mohanty, At-Karanjia, Remuna, Dist-Balasore, as Chairperson, Odisha State Commission for Women, Bhubaneswar,' reads the notification issued by the State Women and Child Development Department. As per the notification, Mohanty will hold the office of chairperson of the SCW for three years. After being appointed the chairperson of the SCW, Mohanty thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and State BJP president Manmohan Samal for placing their faith in her. 'I will put in all my efforts to ensure that the neglected and oppressed women of State get justice,' said Mohanty. The State government has also nominated four new members to the State Commission for Women, as per the provisions under Section 3 (1) and Section 3 (2)(c) of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993 (Odisha Act 19 of 1994). The Women and Child Development Department announced Prativa Satpathy, Urmila Mohapatra, Kalpana Mallick and Mukta Sahu as the new members of the SCW, Odisha. The SCW acts to safeguard and promote the rights and interests of women in the State, addressing issues related to gender equality, safety and empowerment through advocacy, policy recommendations and grievance redressal. In another significant development, the State government appointed Babita Patra as the chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR). Patra will hold the office for three years from the date of assuming office or till attaining the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. The State government also appointed Sukeshi Oram, Kalpana Lenka, Chandana Das, Kasturi Mishra, Manasmita Khuntia and Sujata Nayak as members of the OSCPCR for three years.
