Shovana appointed Odisha SCW chief
'In pursuance of Section-3(1) and Section-3(2) (b) of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993, the State government have been pleased to appoint Smt. Shovana Mohanty, At-Karanjia, Remuna, Dist-Balasore, as Chairperson, Odisha State Commission for Women, Bhubaneswar,' reads the notification issued by the State Women and Child Development Department. As per the notification, Mohanty will hold the office of chairperson of the SCW for three years. After being appointed the chairperson of the SCW, Mohanty thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and State BJP president Manmohan Samal for placing their faith in her. 'I will put in all my efforts to ensure that the neglected and oppressed women of State get justice,' said Mohanty.
The State government has also nominated four new members to the State Commission for Women, as per the provisions under Section 3 (1) and Section 3 (2)(c) of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993 (Odisha Act 19 of 1994). The Women and Child Development Department announced Prativa Satpathy, Urmila Mohapatra, Kalpana Mallick and Mukta Sahu as the new members of the SCW, Odisha.
The SCW acts to safeguard and promote the rights and interests of women in the State, addressing issues related to gender equality, safety and empowerment through advocacy, policy recommendations and grievance redressal.
In another significant development, the State government appointed Babita Patra as the chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR). Patra will hold the office for three years from the date of assuming office or till attaining the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. The State government also appointed Sukeshi Oram, Kalpana Lenka, Chandana Das, Kasturi Mishra, Manasmita Khuntia and Sujata Nayak as members of the OSCPCR for three years.

State women and child rights panels get new chairpersons, members
Bhubaneswar: State govt on Tuesday appointed Shovana Mohanty as chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) and Babita Patro as chair of the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR). I will try to ensure that women of all categories and sections don't feel lonely, and SCW will stand by them during any distress. Many women are not aware about the rights and laws to protect them. I would try to create more awareness among women about various provisions in the law for them," said Mohanty, a senior BJP member from Remuna in Balasore district. Mohanty was appointed under the provisions of the Odisha State Commission for Women Act, 1993, for a term of three years. The post of chairperson of SCW was vacant since Nov 2024 after the govt removed her predecessor, Minati Behera, on grounds of unsatisfactory performance. Apart from Mohanty, the govt appointed — Prativa Satpathy, Urmila Mohapatra, Kalpana Mallick and Mukta Sahu — as members of the commission. In a separate notification, the govt named Patro from Berhampur, a known face in southern Odisha's social and political circles, as the new chairperson of OSCPCR. Patro, who was the general secretary of state BJP Mahila Morcha, will be tasked with upholding and promoting child rights in the state. She will advise the govt on policy matters and monitor the implementation of laws related to children's welfare and protection. The post of SCPCR chairperson was vacant since March. Sukeshi Oram, Kalpana Lenka, Chandana Das, Kasturi Mishra, Manasmita Khuntia and Sujata Nayak have been appointed as new members of OSCPCR.

BJD seeks SME Minister Nityananda Gond's resignation over OTET question paper leak
BHUBANESWAR: BJD on Friday launched a scathing attack on the state BJP government over Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) question paper leak demanding the resignation of Minister for School and Mass Education Nityananda Gond. Addressing mediapersons here, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said the recent arrests in connection with the OTET leak has once again exposed the irregularities plaguing the state's examination system. 'The protectors have become predators. The government is merely targeting low-level employees like data entry operators and subordinate staff, while shielding those in key positions. The Board of Secondary Education (BSE) authorities and the minister must be held accountable,' he said. Mohanty alleged that the BJP government has failed to conduct even a single examination properly since coming to power and there have been administrative failures and question paper leaks in at least 13 examinations in last 13 months. 'From OPSC to OSSC and OSSSC, all recruitment bodies have been marred by controversy. Examinations such as RI, amin, ICDS supervisor, excise and police sub-inspector, Odisha Civil Services, SDIPRO and now OTET have witnessed administrative lapses, paper leaks or flawed evaluation processes,' he said. Referring to the Odisha Judicial Service Exam controversy in February this year, the BJD leader reminded that the Orissa High Court had directed the OPSC to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to each affected candidate due to faulty grading. 'Even that order is yet to be implemented, proving the government's apathy towards students,' he said. Mohanty also alleged that there were allegations of involvement of a BJP leader in the RI and Amin examination fiasco, but no action has been initiated.
