Manchester United eye new midfielder as Ruben Amorim looks to fix key problem: Report
are looking to sign a new midfielder this summer, with two main targets being considered. According to the Independent, United's new ownership group, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is ready to invest in either Morten Hjulmand or Joao Palhinha to strengthen their squad.
Both these players reportedly have the approval of head coach Ruben Amorim, who has already bought a few players this summer, but the midfield still remains a concern. Reports suggest that Kobbie Mainoo, who impressed last season, may leave Old Trafford and go to another club this summer.

Why are United concerned about the midfield?
If Mainoo does leave, United will need someone to play in midfield alongside captain Bruno Fernandes. This has put Morten Hjulmand and Joao Palhinha in the spotlight. They are reportedly being considered for the job, but a final decision is still awaited.
Danish midfielder Hjulmand, who scored against England at Euro 2024, currently plays for Sporting CP and has three years left on his contract. Amorim knows him well from his time as coach of Sporting and would like to bring him to Manchester United.
More from Football
The second option is Joao Palhinha, who moved from Fulham to Bayern Munich for £47.4 million last year. He helped Bayern win the Bundesliga but had some injury troubles. United still believe he could be a good fit in Amorim's team and would like to bring him to the Premier League.
Meanwhile, United are also making room in the squad by letting players go. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan, while Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho could both be sold this summer. They have bought forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon has also joined the squad.
The team is currently in the United States for pre-season camp. They beat West Ham 2-1 on Sunday and are set to play Bournemouth and Everton next.
United endured one of their worst seasons in recent memory, finishing 15th in the 2024-25 Premier League table with just 42 points. The Red Devils managed only 11 wins from 38 games, suffering a staggering 18 losses. The club also missed out on European football.

Liverpool planning a grand gesture for Alexander Isak as a deal with Newcastle expected to reach
Liverpool are ready to welcome Alexander Isak to the club from Newcastle United. The player finished the 2024/25 season with second most goals in the league. read more Having made a spree of signings already, the Premier League champions Liverpool are not yet done with the and are working their way to rope in Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak. The Reds are willing to splurge as much as £100 million to land the player and are set to submit the sum as their first bid. Newcastle, on the other hand, would demand an incoming of £150 million. It is expected that a common ground will be reached, and the player will soon shift his base to Anfield from St. James' Park. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Should the deal successfully take place, Liverpool have planned a huge gift for the potential recruit. The club is reportedly ready to vacate the No.14 jersey and hand it to Isak. No.14 and Isak have a long-term connection. The player has worn the number during the entirety of his Newcastle stint. The Swede was a No.14 at Dortmund as well. However, he donned the No.19 at Real Sociedad. More from Football He will most likely wear the No.14 jersey of Liverpool too. But the jersey is not free at the moment. It currently belongs to Federico Chiesa. The Italian arrived with big hopes last summer, but struggled for minutes throughout the season, and hence he is linked to a return to Serie A. Why Isak fancies the No.14 jersey? As Chiesa's future is uncertain, Liverpool are considering giving his number to Isak. Chiesa prefers to wear the No.14 jersey because his idol Thierry Henry used to don the same jersey number when he was active. 'I would probably stay with No.14, yeah,' Isak said. 'I think it's a difficult one because I've been successful with No.14, and it would probably not be an easy decision.' He revealed to Alan Shearer the significance of wearing 14, which may be waiting for him at Liverpool: 'He [Henry] was definitely one player I liked a bit extra. 'Many great players have had number 14, you have [David] Ginola from Newcastle as well. When I signed for Newcastle, out of the numbers that was available, I think 14 was the most iconic one.' Newcastle Reject Massive Bid From Liverpool For Alexander Isak: Reports
Newcastle have rejected Liverpool's opening bid to sign unsettled Sweden striker Alexander Isak, according to reports on Friday. Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million ($159 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour, with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On Thursday, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. It was reported on Friday that Newcastle had told Isak he could agree a new deal containing a get-out clause for next year, but he responded by insisting he wants to move now. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back to back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said: "He is still our player. He's contracted to us. "We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. "My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control." Liverpool have spent over £250 million so far in the summer window, with Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili joining Wirtz and Ekitike at Anfield.
