
From belly dancing in Egypt to normalization with Israel
In the mid-twentieth century, Arab artists were deeply connected to the struggles around them. Voices from Cairo, Baghdad, Damascus, and beyond stood openly with Palestine. Singers voiced their support. Poets recited in public squares. Theatre served as a tool for awareness, not a means of escape. There was little room for confusion, and occupation was named for what it was.
Today, the landscape has shifted. Some artists have become envoys for normalization, collaborating with Israeli counterparts under slogans like 'building bridges' or 'breaking barriers' — as if decades of displacement and repression were simply a misunderstanding. Of course, not everyone engaging across divides does so cynically. Some may truly believe that dialogue, even under conditions of injustice, can plant the seeds of something better. But we must be honest about the power dynamics at play — and about the risk of confusing normalization with justice.
Carioca stood truly and firmly with the oppressed. She understood that recasting injustice as dialogue is a form of betrayal. Many today sugarcoat silence as realism. Worse than silence is the deliberate twisting of truth to fit the aggressor's narrative. Supporting Palestine today can lead to censorship, exclusion, or quiet blacklisting.
Aligning with Israel, by contrast, often unlocks access to funding, favorable media coverage, polite applause — and the occasional crumbs of financial reward. I have experienced this dynamic myself. Not everyone responds this way. Some have engaged me with real curiosity, even when we disagreed. But increasingly, what should be honest disagreement gets recast as hostility — or worse, antisemitism — simply for questioning the narrative. In one exchange, after calmly presenting documented facts, human rights findings, and a call for accountability on all sides, I received this reply: 'You are spreading fake information, wrong numbers and hatred. I will not enter the debate as it's a social media antisemitic tsunami… a narrative battle Israel lost long ago.'
When this is the response to reasonable questions, the problem is no longer disagreement — it is the unwillingness to engage at all. There was a time when Arab artists, writers, and public voices stood openly for Palestine. Today, many turn away from the atrocities Palestinians endure. But if even the image of slight harm befalls an Israeli, the outrage among many Arabs is immediate, the sympathy unconditional, and the moral framing absolute.
The world does not lack the ability to feel. It chooses where to look. This is not a call to sever dialogue. On the contrary, we need more of it, but rooted in truth, not selective empathy. Real peace isn't born from politeness. It begins with the courage to name injustice, to confront what each side holds as truth, and to seek not an illusion of balance, but a shared solution that ends suffering, not prolongs it with ambiguity.

ADDIS ABABA: UN chief Antonio Guterres on Monday said food must not be used as a weapon of war as world leaders gathered for a food summit in Africa, where 280 million people face chronic hunger. The African Union urged donors to provide greater support for the world's poorest continent, which is struggling with poverty, unrest and the effects of climate change. A new report co-authored by several United Nations agencies found global hunger fell slightly in 2024 thanks to progress in Asia and South America. But 8.2 percent of the world—an estimated 638 to 720 million people—still faced hunger last year, and the situation was worsening particularly in Africa, where the figure is 20.2 percent. 'Hunger fuels instability and undermines peace. We must never accept hunger as a weapon of war,' Antonio Guterres told the UN Food Systems Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa via video link. 'Climate change is disrupting harvests, supply chains and humanitarian aid,' he said. He highlighted the worsening crises in Sudan and Gaza. The World Health Organization has warned that malnutrition in the occupied Palestinian territory has reached 'alarming levels' since Zionist entity imposed a total blockade on Gaza on March 2. In late May, Zionist entity began allowing a trickle of aid to enter, but more than 100 NGOs have warned that 'mass starvation' is spreading. The summit takes place against the backdrop of aid cuts by the United States and other Western nations that are badly affecting much of the developing world. 'At this crucial moment, how many children and mothers on the continent are sleeping hungry? Millions, certainly,' he said. Youssouf said more than 280 million Africans were malnourished, with 'nearly 3.4 million... on the brink of famine' and some 10 million displaced by drought, floods and cyclones. He urged AU member states to devote 10 percent of their gross domestic product to agriculture to help foster 'nutritional resilience'. 'But we cannot do this alone. We call on our partners to honor their commitments to finance and support African solutions,' he said. The UN report made clear how far there was to go to meet its goal of ending world hunger by 2030. Current projections suggest some 512 million people will still be undernourished by the end of the decade, 60 percent of them in Africa. 'Global hunger figures have slightly improved compared to 2022 and 2023,' Alvaro Lario, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, told AFP. 'But we have not come back to the levels of five years ago. This is not very good news.' Four of the worst five countries for food security are in Africa: Nigeria, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia. The UN report highlights 'persistent inequalities', with women and rural communities most affected, and the gap widening further over the previous year. 'Despite adequate global food production, millions of people go hungry or are malnourished because safe and nutritious food is not available, not accessible or, more often, not affordable,' it said. It found the response to price spikes between 2021 and 2023 was 'more coordinated, informed and restrained' than the previous inflationary shock during the 2007-08 financial crisis. DEVELOPING countries amid a troubling international situation is a difficult equation. Nevertheless, this has not been the case for King Mohammed VI of Morocco, who has faced challenges throughout 26 years of tireless work. He exerted tremendous efforts to establish a capable and strong kingdom. Events have proven that the trees he planted have borne fruit on more than one level, while his efforts continue to achieve further gains in other areas. The Moroccan monarch pointed out that 'whatever the country has achieved is not a coincidence, as it is the result of sound major development choices and the fruit of political and institutional stability.' I have been saying for a long time that Morocco is the golden gateway to Africa. Therefore, Morocco has been working hard at all levels to lead the region in terms of development. King Mohammed VI is fully aware that his country cannot achieve miracles alone, but rather requires two wings to take off -- the Arab and African wings. The Kingdom of Morocco has long played this role, gaining the world's trust in the Kingdom as an active investment hub at all levels. Today, Morocco is a leading hub in several industries, including automotive assembly, aircraft component manufacturing, renewable energy, and more. These industrial projects have contributed to minimizing unemployment and enhancing food self-sufficiency. 'Building on this solid foundation, a more competitive, diversified, and open economy has been established,' King Mohammed VI asserted during his speech from the Throne. The Moroccan economy today is the center of power in Africa, significantly boosting the gross domestic product and diversifying sources of income. Despite the natural challenges like drought and international crises, Morocco managed to maintain an upward trajectory at all levels and achieved significant growth, positively impacting the standard of living of the citizens and creating new job opportunities. These achievements would not have been possible without a developed and advanced infrastructure, encompassing all service facilities. Despite all that has been achieved over the past two and a half decades, the energetic King was frank with his people when he said, 'I will not be satisfied – regardless of the level of economic and infrastructure development – if it does not contribute to improving the living conditions of citizens in all social classes and in all areas.' This sincerity has been maintained by King Mohammed VI since assuming power, making it the foundation of Morocco's relations with the entire world. Thus, the many roles that Rabat has played throughout history have been based on its unwavering positions and its extension of friendship and cooperation to everyone, especially its natural geographical neighbors. Consequently, King Mohammed VI stresses, on every occasion, the close relations with the Algerian people. He affirmed, 'We have a strong commitment to extend a helping hand to our brothers in Algeria.' The Western Sahara issue has long been a source of concern and trouble for Rabat. However, thanks to King Mohammed VI's wisdom, diplomacy, and sagacity, he managed to steer the compass towards the right direction. King Mohammed VI has always been keen on clearly stating Moroccan rights within the framework of the Kingdom's sovereignty over the Sahara, which has strengthened the positions of many countries regarding the issue. Today, 26 years after assuming power, King Mohammed VI succeeded in taking his country to new horizons. On this occasion, one cannot forget what the late King Hassan II once said about his son: 'I prepared him to carry the nation. I did not teach him to be a prince, but rather a servant of his country.' Indeed, King Mohammed VI is the best servant of his country, his homeland and his people. King Mohammed VI is the man capable of solving the most difficult problems.

Kuwait-Benin ties 5 decades strong
KUWAIT CITY, July 30: Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Ambassador Nayef Al-Mudhaf said the relationship between Kuwait and Benin spans more than 50 years, characterized by strong ties and fruitful cooperation in many areas. In a statement to the press when he attended the recent celebration of the 65th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Benin, Al-Mudhaf disclosed that the two countries signed 11 agreements, including the skilled labor agreement; in addition to the existence of a joint committee, ongoing political consultations, and other agreements that support the frameworks of bilateral cooperation. Al-Mudhaf disclosed that the Republic of Benin opened its embassy in Kuwait in 2009, while Kuwait opened its embassy in Cotonou in 2012, a manifestation of the strength of bilateral relations. He confirmed that coordination is underway to arrange the visit of the Benin Foreign Affairs Minister to the State of Kuwait, which will be announced in due course. Regarding the domestic worker agreement, Al-Mudhaf explained that it is still under negotiation between the two sides, hoping that an agreement will be reached soon. He added that the number of Benin citizens in Kuwait exceeds 10,000, and most of them are domestic workers. He pointed out that Kuwait, through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), has so far provided 14 development loans to the Republic of Benin, a total of around KD42 million. He asserted this reflects the depth of the development partnership between the two countries. On the other hand, Ambassador of the Republic of Benin to Kuwait Prof. Baderou Dine Aguemon pointed out that the 65th anniversary of his country's independence is a glorious national occasion to celebrate not only freedom and sovereignty, but also the collective commitment of Benin to move toward a more prosperous, peaceful, and internationally cooperative future. He emphasized that the new Republic of Benin is open and ambitious, ready to forge fruitful strategic partnerships with sisterly and friendly countries, especially Kuwait. He said the Beninese Embassy in Kuwait is ready to serve the community and provide the necessary support to anyone wishing to learn about the opportunities available in his country, urging everyone to contact the embassy whenever necessary. He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled for their support and commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
