All-Star Tatis leads the Padres to a 4-1 win against the Rangers
Tatis, named to the National League All-Star team for the third time, reached base four times.
With runners on first and second and two outs in the fourth, Tatis doubled into the left field corner to bring in Trenton Brooks for a 2-1 lead. Martín Maldonado came around from first, slid headfirst and originally was called safe on Marcus Semien's relay throw to catcher Jonah Heim, but the Rangers challenged and the call was overturned.
The Padres failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the bottom of the first against Jack Leiter (4-6). But they tied it two innings later when Tatis reached on a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Luis Arraez's two-out single to center.
Maldonado and Jake Cronenworth singled in runs in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Padres rookie opener David Morgan had a rough first inning but allowed the only run thanks to a play at the plate and a great diving catch by Cronenworth with the bases loaded.
Leiter allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.
Key moment
Tatis' RBI double came one pitch after he was brushed back and lost hold of his bat.
Key stat
Manny Machado, who needs two hits to reach 2,000 for his career, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
Up next
Rangers RHP Jacob deGrom (9-2, 2.13 ERA), who was named to the American League All-Star team, is scheduled to start Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at the Los Angeles Angels. Padres RHP Yu Darvish, out with elbow inflammation since spring training, makes his season debut.

Yankees unsure of the severity of All-Star Max Fried's blister on index finger
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was unsure of the severity of Max Fried's blister on his left index finger, a day after the All-Star left-hander left his start after three innings. 'It's just that (a blister),' Boone said before the Yankees faced the Cubs on Sunday. 'So he'll be kind of leaning into all the modalities and all of the tricks that you try and do to deal with blisters. Then we'll see how it lines up for what we want to line them up coming out of the break, based on just how that's recovered.' Fried allowed four runs — three earned — six hits and a season-high three walks in his shortest start since signing a n eight-year, $218 million contract with the Yankees in December. Nine of 18 hitters reached base, Fried threw only 39 of 73 pitches for strikes and fell behind with first-pitch balls to nine batters. The three-time All-Star felt the blister on his 72nd pitch while facing Jon Berti and ended his outing by getting the infielder on a force out. 'Every case is it's own thing,' Fried said Saturday. 'Definitely didn't want to do too much where I wanted to catch it, hopefully before it became a real big, big deal. It definitely was uncomfortable enough to the point where I didn't want to risk more and it was going to affect my pitches. So, yeah, just the next couple of days are going to be big in just being able to evaluate on how long I need.' He made four trips to the injured list because of blisters on that finger during his time with the Atlanta Braves. He went 23 days between starts in 2018, 12 days each in 2019 and 2021 and 18 in 2023, including a gap between the regular season and playoffs. Fried is 11-3 with a 2.43 ERA and become the Yankees ace after Gerrit Cole needed Tommy John surgery . He was 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA in 15 starts through June 15, but has a 4.33 ERA in his past four outings. Fried was selected to the AL All-Star team before getting replaced on the roster by Carlos Rodón, who pitched eight innings in Friday's 11-0 win. Fried will attend the festivities in Atlanta and the Yankees may start him in a three-game series at AL East-leading Toronto on July 21-23 after opening the second half by visiting the Braves. ___ AP MLB:

Astros' Isaac Paredes will miss the All-Star Game because of a family matter
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes has dropped out of next week's All-Star Game to attend to a family matter. Paredes was added to the roster Wednesday after Cleveland's José Ramírez opted out to rest a nagging Achilles tendon injury. Paredes was in the Astros' lineup at designated hitter Sunday for the finale of a series against the Texas Rangers and manager Joe Espada said he wouldn't miss any time after the break because of the issue. 'Oh yeah, he'll be back,' Espada said. 'He just needs to go and spend some time and take care of some family matters, but … he's fine.' It was the second straight season Paredes had been named an All-Star. The 26-year-old is in his first season with the Astros after a trade from the Cubs. He entered Sunday hitting .254 with 19 homers and 49 RBIs. ___ AP MLB:

Padres Reportedly Extremely Interested in Red Sox's Jarren Duran
Padres Reportedly Extremely Interested in Red Sox's Jarren Duran originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has recently been in the middle of trade talks. Duran is 28 years old and coming off an All-Star season. His numbers have dipped a little this year, but he's still put up a strong start to 2025. Advertisement With the Red Sox's recent hot streak, they'll likely be a mix of buyers and sellers at the MLB trade deadline. Recently, the Padres have become the favorite to land Duran if the Red Sox decide to move the outfielder at the deadline. ESPN's Jeff Passan believes the Padres' best move at the deadline would be to acquire Duran to play left field and solidify their outfield. "No player and team have been linked as strongly as Duran and the Padres -- and that's without any knowledge of how the Red Sox intend to handle the deadline," Passan wrote. "Roman Anthony's emergence has put Boston in a position to float Duran and Wilyer Abreu in trade discussions, and whether it's now or over the winter, Boston wants to use its surplus of bats to fill voids elsewhere." Advertisement The Red Sox also have Masataka Yoshida back healthy, and although he's playing more of a DH role, Boston simply has too many guys to play each night. With the young developing talent the Red Sox have, moving on from Duran may be their best option, especially if they can get a haul in return. As for the Padres, it seems like the dream move. Passan mentions the Padres' struggle to find a reliable left fielder this season, and Duran could be the perfect solution. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora (13) talks with the media before the teamís game against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Matt Marton-Imagn Images "Left field in San Diego is among the biggest voids in the game. The Padres have tried eight players in left this season, and collectively they're barely have an OPS of over .600. A Duran-Jackson Merrill-Fernando Tatis Jr. outfield would be a factory of dynamism that would be under team control through the end of the 2028 season," Passan added. "The Padres might need to get creative -- beyond shortstop Leo De Vries (who's believed to be off-limits) and catcher Ethan Salas, their farm system is middling -- but nobody does creativity like GM A.J. Preller. Advertisement "And whether that means facilitating a deal through a third team or including one of their high-leverage relievers such as closer Robert Suárez, San Diego is willing to go places most other organizations would never consider." San Diego currently sit five and a half games back in their division and a half game back in the wild card race. The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 12 games to put themselves in nearly an identical spot. Boston is five games back in their division and hold the final wild card spot. Boston trading Duran to the Padres seems like a win-win for both sides, but it could come at a steep price. However, as mentioned above, that hasn't stopped San Diego in the past.
