Anita Dobson addresses huge Doctor Who twist as she takes on iconic role
Doctor Who's upcoming finale is set to confirm fan suspicion as Anita Dobson has lifted the lid on Mrs Flood's true identity and embodies an iconic villain in the Whoniverse.
Doctor Who fans have been suspicious of Mrs Flood from the get-go - and rightly so! A new twist has now been confirmed with a huge secret set to unravel in the show's double-bill finale.
Anita Dobson is getting good at keeping secrets. After pulling off a surprise comeback in EastEnders for the soap's 40th anniversary, the 76-year-old actress faced another major challenge: keeping her Doctor Who character's true identity under wraps.
'It was hard,' she says. 'You start to say a sentence and think, 'No, I can't go down that road.' It was so exciting, though.' In the current season, Anita plays kind and unassuming Mrs Flood. But underneath that warm exterior lies the Rani, a ruthless, renegade Time Lady.
'She's a classic enemy of the Doctor,' says series creator Russell T Davies. 'Whenever you introduce any woman into any role on Doctor Who , half the internet conjects that she's the Rani. Sometimes, you just have to go with it.'
For long-time fans, the Rani's return is a major moment. Originally introduced in 1985 and played by the late Kate O'Mara, the character was a sharp-witted and glamorous neurochemist who preferred science over ethics. 'She's more interesting than simply being all evil because she was a scientist that was always more amoral than immoral,' Russell adds.
Kate, who died from ovarian cancer in 2014, left a big impression on the Doctor Who fandom, Russell included. 'She was a wonderful woman, I wish I'd known her. We dedicated the readthrough to her,' he says.
Now, four decades after the Rani first graced our screens, Anita is bringing her back – in a big way. But she's not alone. In a groundbreaking moment for the Whoniverse, Anita shares the role with Bend It Like Beckham star Archie Panjabi, who appears as a future incarnation of the Rani in a jaw-dropping bi-generation scene.
Weight loss method backed by Dr Michael Mosley and loved by Davina McCall
'It was so much fun. I saw the one with Ncuti [Gatwa] and David [Tennant], when Ncuti took over as the Doctor,' Anita says. 'When I got told it was going to happen to me and Archie, I was blown away. It was more difficult than you'd think, but it was great fun.'
But the transition took some getting used to. 'When Archie came on board, I didn't understand it all,' says Anita. 'Until I learned we'd be doing the split. Then I got it. We are one, except she plays the bossy one, I sit and make notes. It was an exciting alliance.'
And the chemistry between the two was instant. 'Archie was a dream to work with,' Anita says. 'We clicked on the first day. That's what you hope for. ' Russell recalls, 'We don't have any behind-the-scenes footage of them separately, because they never left each other's sides.'
Anita had her suspicions, but wasn't told she was the Rani until the last minute. 'Throughout the series, my make-up artist and I used to discuss it,' says Anita. 'But I wasn't sure. Once I found out, I had to be even more careful not to give anything away.'
In the two-part season finale – Wish World and The Reality War – both versions of the Rani are unleashed on a universe that has changed in their absence.
With Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor believing he's the last Time Lord, the Rani's power takes seismic proportions. 'She's on her greatest experiment yet,' Russell says.
'She's rarely worked at this level before. What you get now is the two Ranis working together. It's a fantastically servile relationship where she sort of becomes the Igor to the Rani's Frankenstein. The Doctor is up against two enemies instead of one.'
The episode promises twists – and a coalition of evil that includes Jonah Hauer-King 's Conrad, last seen imprisoned. 'He's now part of this big coalition against the Doctor,' teases Russell. Familiar faces including Millie Gibson, Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley and Alexander Devrient also return.
For Anita, the experience has been nothing short of exhilarating. 'When I went in to do some audio dubbing, I watched the episode,' she says. 'I gasped out loud. They even filmed my reaction. I'm proud to be a part of it.'
With secrets revealed, alliances forged and evil ascending, Doctor Who is heading towards a finale packed with heart-pounding drama.
The Doctor steps into a battle unlike any other – but what will become of Ruby? What is the Rani's endgame? And who will survive the chaos she unleashes? All that's left is to board the TARDIS and hold on tight.

Dark EastEnders scenes as Joel makes horror move in story with Tommy
Joel Marshall (Max Murray) continues to prove a bad influence on Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) in upcoming scenes on EastEnders. Joel took Tommy under his wing soon after arriving in Walford, and the pair quickly became thick and thieves. Already lonely and troubled, Tommy found (human) friendship in Joel, bonding as they bullied Barney Mitchell (Lewis Bridgeman) and unleashed all manner of teenage mischief over Albert Square. Newcomer Joel's behaviour has taken an increasingly dark turn however, after he slept with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) and then shamed her for it online. This week, the pair stole Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) credit card, using it to watch a pornographic video online. Dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) are still under the impression that his friendship with Tommy is good for Joel… but are unaware that the situation is about to drastically worsen. Vicki is disturbed when Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd) reveals that no-one wants to be friends with Joel because he shamed Avani online for sleeping with him. Meanwhile, thinking Alfie responsible for the pornographic video on his laptop, Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) finally confronts him. The pair soon work out that it was Tommy who had been watching it. Elsewhere, Vicki tells Ross about Joel's actions toward Avani. The pair agree that he needs more positive male role models in his life. Later, they see Joel helping Tommy with his speech for Kat and Alfie's wedding. The pair breathe a sigh of relief, hoping that the friendship will be good for Joel. The next day, Kat and Alfie prepare to celebrate their wedding. However, concerns over Tommy and the video prevent them from enjoying the day. Alfie promises to talk to Tommy – but is it too little, too late? Elsewhere, Joel shows Tommy a video by a social media influencer who says derogatory things about women. More Trending Is Joel about to lead Tommy down an even darker path? This is just the latest worrying development from Joel, who's consistently proved himself to have an alarming attitude toward women. It was recently revealed that the reason Joel and Ross are no longer welcome back in Australia is due to Joel's past – making an 'upskirting' video without the other party's knowledge or consent. View More » Since arriving in Walford, he wasted little time in reverting to bad habits, making a recording of his time in bed with Avani. Ross discovered the footage, but chose to keep it a secret, so long as Joel kept his nose clean. Freddy Brazier 'missing from brother Bobby's birthday party' amid family drama
Freddy Brazier's dad, Jeff, has reportedly taken legal action against the 20-year-old's nan, Jackiey Budden - who is Jade Goody's mum - in a bid to 'keep him safe' Freddy Brazier failed to turn up to his brother Bobby's birthday yesterday - according to reports - amid rumours of a feud in the family. Freddy, 20, is said to be living at his nan, Jackiey Budden's house, despite doting dad, Jeff Brazier, reportedly taking legal action against Jade Goody's mum in a bid to 'protect' his youngest son. On the weekend, Freddy appeared to defy his dad by posting a TikTok video of himself and Jackiey larking around in the sunshine in her garden in South London. And now it's been reported that he skipped his older brother Bobby's 22nd birthday on Monday. The Sun reports there was "sadness" at the bash after Freddy failed to appear, with a source claiming that Bobby spent the day with dad and stepmum, Kate. They reportedly said: "Bobby celebrated his birthday with dad Jeff and step mum Kate over the weekend. It was a really nice family occasion, but everyone really missed Freddie." Freddy was just four years old and his EastEnders actor brother Bobby was five when their mother Jade tragically died from cervical cancer in 2009. They have been raised by their doting dad, Jeff, who heartbreakingly admitted he didn't see much of his youngest son when the pair appeared in Celebrity Race Across the World last year. According to the Mail on Sunday, Freddy is now living with Jackiey at her flat in Bermondsey. Those reportedly close to the family told the publication: "Jeff was never going to keep Freddy away from his Nanny for very long – they've always had a strong bond. Jeff may hate her for all sorts of reasons going back many years, but Freddy loves her very much." The source added: "They had a great time together, playing with her dog and catching up at her flat – where he has often stayed over the years. Whatever Jeff hoped to achieve with his legal efforts, it hasn't worked." Freddy didn't appear to let reports of his dad's legal action against his nan affect him when he posted a video of himself dancing with Jackiey at the weekend. Despite his dad's concern about his relationship with Jackiey, 67, Freddy posted a TikTok video of the pair dancing in her garden in South London. Seen with his shirt off, sporting shorts, the model larked about in the sunshine while Jackiey, also in shorts, slippers and a mustard-coloured cardigan danced along. Captioning the clip, which concerned dad Jeff was bound to see, Freddy wrote: "#fyp #explore #freddybrazier #jackieybudden #dancetrend.' Responding to the post, one of the lad's followers said: 'She'll make you feel like you have a piece of your mum,' while a second added: 'There's just something about a Nana. That bond is important.'
