Luis Gil's return to the mound ends in disappointment as Yankees are swept by Marlins

Washington Post2 days ago
MIAMI — Luis Gil waited several long months to return to the mound. His start Sunday hardly went the way he would have hoped.
The Yankees' young right-hander lasted just 3 1/3 innings after allowing five hits and five runs in a 7-3 loss to the Marlins that marked the first Miami sweep of New York in franchise history.
'Obviously, a struggle,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'Just no real command today. ... He flashed some of his stuff. I thought he did some good things down in the zone at times, especially with some of their lefties. But too inconsistent with the strike throwing and (it) got to be a long day for him.'
Gil last year became the fourth pitcher in franchise history to be voted AL Rookie of the Year. But his 2025 campaign was placed on hold after being diagnosed in March with a high-grade lat strain in his pitching shoulder.
'From the moment I got hurt, I immediately just wanted to be out there,' Gil said Saturday, a day before he was set to make his season debut. 'It's been a long process. It's a long process, but I think I've done a really good job at following the planning to get back on the field, to get healthy again.'
Gil's four-seam fastball averaged 96.4 mph and peaked at 98.5 mph. He avoided giving up a home run but issued four walks and was lifted at 77 pitches in the fourth.
'The command didn't help. I wasn't commanding the way I wanted,' Gil said through an interpreter. 'But looking back, you know, it was the first start in the big leagues since October last year. So I'm sure I'll be able to make the adjustments.'
Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder, and an MRI later revealed the lat strain. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest.
He went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings.
Gil's shaky debut comes at a rough point in the season for the Yankees, whose inconsistency has prompted a rash of criticism, the latest coming from former Yankees stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez on Fox's pregame show Saturday night.
'They make way too many mistakes,' Jeter said. 'Way too many mistakes, and you can't get away with making that number of mistakes against great teams.'
Added Rodriguez: 'Where's the accountability?'
Boone addressed those criticisms before Sunday's game, saying it comes with the territory of being the Yankees, but he added after the loss that it's 'gut-check' time for his club.
New York's weekend series at Miami included the Yankees blowing a six-run lead in a wild 13-12 loss on Friday, before a 2-0 loss on Saturday.
The Yankees had a seven-game lead in the AL East in late May. By July 2, the lead was gone and the Yankees have been looking up at Toronto in the division ever since. The red-hot Boston Red Sox, who were more than 10 games behind the Yankees about two months ago, have overtaken their rival for the second spot in the AL East and AL wild-card lead.
'It's getting late,' Boone said. 'And it's certainly not too late for us. I am confident that we're going to get it together. But that's all it is right now is, you know, it's empty until we start doing it.'

Chicago Bulls bringing back historic pinstripe jerseys

How much of a statement their play will make next season is up for debate, but the Chicago Bulls' statement uniforms are winners. The Bulls are bringing back the pinstripes. This design is inspired by the jerseys worn by the team during the Jordan comeback championship era from 1995-97, as well as in 2007-08 and 2012-13. Chicago brought back Dennis Rodman to show off the vintage look jerseys. The team will wear the jersey on select Statement Edition game nights, which will be announced at a later date (after the NBA releases the upcoming league schedule in the next few weeks). I'll tune into those games just to see the jerseys back on the court.

Commanders' Terry McLaurin Drawing Trade Interest from Iconic Franchise

Commanders' Terry McLaurin Drawing Trade Interest from Iconic Franchise originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders are navigating a tricky situation with star receiver Terry McLaurin after he formally requested a trade on Thursday amid his drawn-out contract negotiations. McLaurin is entering the final year of his three-year contract and is due to make $15.5 million in 2025. A six-year vet with Washington, McLaurin is seeking a raise that would pay him near top-of-market value. After yet another 1,000+ yard season (his fifth straight) and his first All-Pro selection, it's obvious that he deserves it. However, if the organization continues balking at a new high-priced contract, it's worth investigating some trade options from around the league. One rumor that has began circulating involves one of the league's most iconic franchises: the Pittsburgh Steelers. Steelers writer Chris Halicke reports that Pittsburgh reached out to Washington inquiring about a trade involving McLaurin, although the full package was not disclosed. Halicke also learned some insight on how McLaurin feels about this potential career move. "In reaching out to the Commanders, the Steelers learned that McLaurin not only wants to be paid like a true No. 1 receiver, which is expected, he wants to be a true No. 1 receiver on whatever team he plays on in 2025 and beyond," Halicke said. In this case, the Steelers won't be much of a fit. Pittsburgh landed DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and immediately committed to his future as WR1 by handing him a four-year, $132 million contract. McLaurin is also said to be seeking a higher price than that - with $35 million APY being a target number. As a whole, the Steelers have been no stranger to blockbuster moves this offseason. After acquiring Metcalf and trading former No. 1 option pass-catcher George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, they finally landed future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to be the next starting quarterback. Defensively, the team also dealt safety Minkah Fitzpatrick for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a swap with the Miami Dolphins that included tight end Jonnu Smith. A move to land McLaurin would certainly be another shakeup to Mike Tomlin's squad, but initial rumblings here have likely died down after considering the logistics. Not only is McLaurin going to demand a raise wherever he goes, it appears he also wants to prominently be featured in the offense. The easiest solution to both of those wishes is for Washington to give him an extension, but as his training camp "hold in" continues, only time will tell how this relationship evolves moving forward. Cincinnati Reds pitching depth tested as Nick Lodolo (finger blister) lands on IL

CHICAGO – The Cincinnati Reds won't push starter Nick Lodolo to try to pitch through a finger blister at the risk of making it worse with fewer than 50 games left in the season. Consequently, they'll push the limits of their pitching depth. Lodolo, who left his Aug. 4 start in the second inning because of a left index finger blister that developed suddenly on a breaking ball thrown to the Chicago Cubs' Justin Turner, landed on the 15-day injured list, as expected, Aug. 5. Reliever Yosver Zulueta was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to join the bullpen and take Lodolo's place on the roster. Nick Nick Martinez, who got seven outs in relief of Lodolo Aug. 4, likely will take the lefty Lodolo's spot in the rotation for his next turn, probably Aug. 9 in Pittsburgh. If there's a silver lining to the move for the Reds, it's that they might be better equipped to weather such a pitching storm than they were a week ago, after acquiring right-hander Zack Littell from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline. Little was scheduled to start against the Cubs Aug. 5. Lodolo, who has been the workhorse of the Reds' pitching staff this season, lands on the IL for the first time this season. He spent two weeks on the IL last season with a similar blister problem. This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Nick Lodolo injury: Reds LHP on IL as pitching depth tested
