Three Bangladeshi nationals escape from Hazaribagh detention center
RANCHI: Three illegal Bangladeshi nationals, who entered India without passports, have fled the detention centre in Jharkhand's Hazaribag.
The escape occurred late Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday morning. In response, security agencies have been placed on high alert.
A special team has been formed, and raids are currently underway to apprehend the three. Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash Singh said that the matter is under investigation and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
All three foreign nationals had been incarcerated for illegal residency in India. Although they had completed their sentences, the Bangladeshi government had not initiated repatriation efforts.
The trio had been transferred to the open jail holding area, referred to as the Detention Centre at Hazaribagh Central Jail. The escapees are identified as, Reena Khan (alias Fina Devi), from Ghazipur, Dhaka. She was transferred from Jamtara Jail to Hazaribagh jail on 4 February 2022.
Nipah Akhtar Khushi, a resident of Chittagong, transferred from Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi to Hazaribagh on 28 September 2024.
Mohammad Nazmul Hang, from Bagerhat, shifted from Dumka Jail to Hazaribagh on 1 March 2025.
It may be noted that over the past two months, two incidents of prisoner suicides have also been reported at JP Central Jail. The latest escape has raised serious concerns regarding the lapse in surveillance, particularly in the monitoring of foreign nationals.

3 incidents in 4 yrs raise concern over H'bag detention centre security
1 2 Hazaribag: The escape of three Bangladeshi nationals from a detention centre located on the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail premises in Hazaribag on Monday morning has raised concern about its security, as two similar incidents occurred in the past. The three persons have, however, been arrested on Tuesday morning. The centre comprising two rooms is dilapidated, with the roof of the building made of asbestos sheets. For external security, barbed wire is installed on the boundary walls. Foreign nationals are kept in these two rooms, while security personnel are deployed in the verandah of the building. A total of four were in the centre, but three escaped. Jail officials said the superintendent of police monitors the security and maintenance of the detention centre, and security personnel are deputed from the district police force. According to the information, the in-charge of the detention centre is a policeman of the rank of a havildar. The district administration deployed six policemen for the security of the Bangladeshis living in the Hazaribag detention centre, and now all six have been suspended. Among them, there were three female security personnel and three men. It is reported that the security personnel closed the door of the detention centre room from outside and slept in the verandah. However, when they woke up and opened the door of the room on Monday morning, the three Bangladeshis were missing. The history of foreign nationals escaping from the detention centre is old. Earlier, three foreign nationals escaped from here. Hazaribag police have not found any of them till date. On March 8, 2021, Jahid Hussain and Md Javed alias Md Noor escaped by breaking the window of the detention centre. An FIR was registered in this regard at Lohsinghana police station. On Sept 13, 2021, a foreign national lodged in the detention centre escaped. The police have not succeeded in finding him either. Officials of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail said that illegal foreign citizens are kept in detention centres. Under Section 3(2)(c) of the Foreigners Act of India, the central govt has the right to expel any illegal citizen from the country. During the process of deportation, such people are kept in these detention centres. In fact, those who do not have documents to stay in the country are kept here and sent back to their country. In the case of the three who escaped, they also completed their sentence. No effort was being made by the Bangladesh govt to bring them back to the country, added jail sources. Therefore, all of them were kept in the detention centre of Hazaribag. Hazaribag SP Anjani Anjan said earlier such incidents occurred at this detention centre. He said, "The three escaped by making their way through the barbed wire on the boundary walls. We are assessing the condition and security of the centre and will take all possible steps to make the security foolproof soon." He added that it was the responsibility of the six jawans deployed there to guard the centre. "All six were suspended due to negligence," he said.

3 Bangladeshis who escaped from H'bag detention centre held
Hazaribag: All three Bangladeshi nationals, who had escaped from the detention centre on the central jail campus in Hazaribag on Monday, were traced and arrested from different locations including Bengal border following a massive manhunt, Hazaribag SP Anjani Anjan said on Tuesday. Those who had escaped are Reena Khan a.k.a Fina Devi from Ghazipur in Bangladesh, Nipah Akhtar Khushi from Chattogram and Mohammad Nazmul Hang from Bagerhat. They were brought to the detention centre from different jails in Jharkhand at different points in time. Addressing the media, SP said that the trio had planned the escape on June 8. He added that considering the seriousness of the incident, they are also probing whether any outsiders helped them escape from the camp. "We promptly formed an SIT under the leadership of Amit Kumar Anand, additional SP-cum-DSP headquarters, who conducted raids based on technical inputs and nabbed all three," he said, adding that Kolkata and Bengal Police too assisted them. Two of the female detainees were held from Bongao in North 24 Parganas in Bengal along the Bangladesh border. One of them was arrested at Dhanbad railway station. "Teams were sent in different directions based on the pre-emptive routes and inputs," he said. The SP said that teams were sent to Tisri in Giridih and Mihijam in Jamtara. The team present in the detention centre kept collecting information and giving necessary instructions to the teams sent out. "Soon a central monitoring team was also formed in my office with the help of which two teams were sent to Bongao and Kolkata in West Bengal. Two arrests were made from Bongao and one from Dhanbad railway station," he added. The SP said the trio travelled the whole night to Dhanbad railway station and then to the Bangladesh border at Bongao. The team which went to Bongao arrested Nipah and Nazmul with the help of Bengal and local police. The team which went to Kolkata chased Reena Khan alias Reena Devi on the basis of information received from SP Hazaribag and technical Cell and other human inputs. This team was being led by sub-inspector Rana Manu Pratap Singh, in-charge of Padma OP, who with the help of GRP Dhanbad and Kolkata Police chased and arrested Reena from Dhanbad railway station. When asked about the intention of the detainees to escape, the SP said their term of punishment was ending, and they wanted to stay in India. He said, "They will now be tried in court under Indian law as cases against them were filed for violation of the Foreigners Act. They will not be sent to the foreigner's detention camp. Instead, they have now been sent to Jai Prakash Narayan Central Jail at Hazaribag as directed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Hazaribag." (Additional inputs from Vishvendu Jaipuriar)
