Ben Roethlisberger believes 2025 will be Aaron Rodgers's last year
This year, Aaron Rodgers will become the latest successor to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. And Roethlisberger believes it will be a one-year arrangement.
'I don't think he's got much more after this year,' Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, via Andrew Vasquez of USA Today. 'I think this might be it for him — personally. I have no reason — you could ask, 'Well, how do you know?' I don't know. I'm just guessing in terms of you coming off an Achilles [tear]. Coming off my elbow [injury], my first year back I felt like I was 100. I wasn't even — you don't realize you're not 100 until the next year when you are 100.'
Rodgers started all 17 games in 2024, a year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon on the fourth play of the first game of the season.
'He's going to feel better, but it doesn't mean that he's going to have two or three years left,' Roethlisberger said. 'I think this might be his last go.'
Roethlisberger is hardly going out on a limb. Not many quarterbacks have played deep into their 40s. Rodgers turns 42 in December. (Roethlisberger retired at 39.)
While he hasn't said it, Rodgers's main objective seems to be authoring a final chapter that has a better ending than his two-year detour to New York. For him, making the playoffs would do the trick.
For the Steelers, winning a playoff game seems to be the bare minimum to make the experiment a success. That's something the team didn't do in any of Roethlisberger's five final seasons in football — or in the three since he retired.

Arthur Smith 'Constructing' Steelers Offense Around Aaron Rodgers
Arthur Smith 'Constructing' Steelers Offense Around Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers finally landed a quarterback, signing veteran and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. The move came very late in the offseason, after most of the roster was constructed. Still, that hasn't stopped the Pittsburgh coaching staff from working their gameplan around Rodgers. Advertisement Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith had Aaron Rodgers on his mind for a long time, and as such, has spent the entire offseason retooling his offense to fit the new guy. Although Rodgers didn't sign until June, he met with Smith and the team back in March. Smith spoke with Missi Matthews for the Steelers' website, and he talked on being able to change quickly, after running offenses for three different NFL franchises and more quarterbacks than one can count. "You learn to adapt to the change." Smith said. "You'd love to have that consistency, but that's not the reality sometimes." Smith noted that last year, the Steelers deployed two different quarterbacks: Justin Fields for the first six weeks, and Russell Wilson for the rest of the season. Researching and preparing an offense around a quarterback is nothing new to Smith, saying last year the Steelers did "the same thing we did with Aaron [Rodgers]." Advertisement "Obviously, there's an unknown if he wasn't gonna be here." Smith noted. "But the way you built things, and the way I kind of mapped it out and that's what I showed him when he got here a couple days ago, we've constructed to move forward with him. 'The way we wanted to evolve, anyway, really fit his skill set. So we're excited. I'm really excited to get going on the season." Now that Rodgers is officially in Pittsburgh, that makes all the work Smith put in during the offseason worth it. Now, the focus shifts to implementation. According to reports, Smith and Rodgers "immediately dove" into the playbook as soon as the pen hit the paper. Interestingly, Smith said Rodgers already fit the changes he wanted to make regardless. Earlier in the offseason, he admitted that he couldn't do everything he would have liked to do. Now, with Rodgers, Smith feels he can fully implement his offense in a way he couldn't with Wilson and Fields. Advertisement Don't be concerned about a battle for control over the offense, as neither Smith nor Rodgers is. "I'm gonna learn the offense, and Arthur and I are gonna talk a bunch this summer," Rodgers said. Steelers great Ben Roethlisberger thinks ‘this might be it' for Aaron Rodgers
In his opening press conference, Aaron Rodgers admitted it was either the Steelers or retirement. And some believe it could be the latter in a year, including Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger. During an episode of his podcast, 'Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger,' the two-time Super Bowl champion said he believes the 2025 season could be Rodgers' last. 'I don't think he's got much more after this year,' Roethlisberger said. 'I think this might be it for him. Personally. You could ask, 'How do I know?' I don't know. I'm just guessing. In terms of, you're coming off an Achilles — coming off my elbow, my first year back, I felt like I was 100 [percent] — I wasn't even [close]. Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract with Pittsburgh on June 7. When Rodgers arrived in New York in 2023, the Jets were quickly seen as Super Bowl contenders. But the future Hall of Famer went down with a torn Achilles after just four snaps in Week 1, derailing Gang Green's season before it really began. In 2024, there wasn't any big improvement with Rodgers under center. The Jets went 5-12, missing the playoffs yet again, and it caused the team to clean house in firing head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas midseason, along with Rodgers' eventual release. 3 Aaron Rodgers #8 of the Pittsburgh Steelers in action during Minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on June 12, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Roethlisberger was referring to his recovery from his 2019 season-ending elbow injury, predicting Rodgers may feel healthier in 2025 than in 2024 but that doesn't guarantee an extended career. Roethlisberger went on to play two more seasons after only playing two games in 2019 before retiring in 2022.
