What happens when the pope wears your hat?
It is well known by now that Pope Leo XIV is a fan of the Chicago White Sox; he even attended Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, which the White Sox recently commemorated with a mural at their ballpark. His latest public display of fandom? Wednesday, he was spotted at the Vatican sporting a '47 branded White Sox cap, along with his white papal cassock.

But what actually happens when the Pope wears your hat? Not too many companies can ever say they've ever had someone of his holiness' stature don their cap. So what exactly does that feel like, and what does it do for a brand??
'He's the ultimate influencer,' said Patrick Cassidy, Vice President of Marketing at '47, adding later, 'What the Pope is wearing is the exact model that a style-conscious fan can get on '47brand.com. That's pretty cool.'
'It was surreal,' said Gary DeStefano, the Massachusetts newlywed who went viral for handing the pope his fresh new lid.
The White Sox cap that the Pope was wearing was a part of their MVP collection. Just a week prior, His Holiness was also seen wearing a Villanova Wildcats hat that was gifted to him by his alma mater. That cap was from '47's Clean Up collection.
'He's becoming this style icon through fandom with '47,' Cassidy said. 'That's a great signifier of where we are as a brand.'
In the last few weeks, Cassidy said that celebs such as Kim Kardashian, Timothee Chalamet and Caitlin Clark have been seen wearing apparel from '47, and the company has seen an influx of people on social media wearing their hats and tagging them daily. While '47 — a Massachusetts-based company acquired last year by New Era — didn't give specifics on how their sales numbers have been impacted by the Pope's recent fashion choices, the company seems optimistic about how it will impact their bottom line going forward.
'There's clear signals in every possible way that more and more people are recognizing the '47 brand,' Cassidy said.
As for Gary and Kelly DeStefano, the newlywed couple from Massachusetts who gave the Pope the White Sox hat, they saw the aftereffects of what they did before they could even go to sleep that night.
On the final day of their 17-day honeymoon in Rome, the two planned to receive the 'sposi novelli', a blessing for newlyweds given by the Pope himself. They initially got the hat from Kelly's cousin with the intention of wearing it in the crowd to get the Pope's attention, clearly aware of his South Side roots. But once the two realized that all of the recently married couples would get a personal greeting from the Pope, they had another idea for what they'd do with the hat.

Once the Pope came up to them and gave them a blessing, DeStefano took the hat out from his side and asked: 'would you mind putting this on?'
Prior to that, DeStefano had mentioned that the two were from Boston and were fans of the Red Sox. So when the Pope saw the White Sox hat, he laughed and said he would wear it, before offering a caveat: 'but, you're going to get in trouble, not me.'
By 9 p.m. in Rome on Wednesday, the couple had gone to sleep after what was one of the most memorable moments of their lives together. Two hours later, the two were awoken by the sound of constant buzzing on their phones.
The phone rang again on Thursday, as they were about to hustle through customs after their flight back home. By then, the video of the brief interaction — with the Pope telling his joke while modeling his black Sox cap — had gone viral.
'That to me showed the human side in the man,' DeStefano said in a phone interview. 'He is the most humble man, down to earth and funny.'

WNBA's Announcement Following Dream Star's Historic Night vs. Sky
WNBA's Announcement Following Dream Star's Historic Night vs. Sky originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Dream handed the Chicago Sky its third consecutive loss, seventh overall for the 2025 WNBA season. The Dream had an 88-70 win over the Sky on Friday, thanks to the historic game from All-Star guard Rhyne Howard. Advertisement Howard was hot offensively for the Dream. She finished with 36 points, eight rebounds and four assists on 48% shooting from the field. However, her reliable outside stroke was what pushed Atlanta to a victory. The two-time All-Star shot nine 3-pointers against the Sky on 47.4%, which was the most she had made in her career. It was a far contrast to her performance in their previous game, which was against the Indiana Fever. Howard had three points and didn't make a shot from deep out of her five attempts. The league also said that Howard tied with Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd and Kelsey Mitchell for the most shots made from beyond the arc in a single game. Advertisement "Rhyne Howard put up 2K NUMBERS in the Dream's win over the Sky 🤯" the WNBA posted. The 6-foot-2 guard also set a new franchise record from long range. The previous record was eight threes in a single game, which was set by Renee Montgomery in 2018. Howard started the 2025 season struggling with her outside stroke. In the first nine games of the year, the 2022 Rookie of the Year shot a lowly 26.1% from long distance. She's attempted 88 shots from downtown. Chicago Bears Rookies Attend Cubs Game At Wrigley Field
The Chicago Bears 2025 rookie class were honored guests at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon. Ozzy Trapilo, Chicago's second round OL pick from Boston College, had the privelege of throwing out the first pitch before the Chicago Cubs took on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Advertisement It wasn't just the Bears' drafted players who were in attendance. The team's undrafted free agent signings from this spring were also part of the outing. Unfortunately, the team didn't witness a win as the Cubs fell to the Pirates in extra innings. This wasn't the first time this season that some of the new faces that will represent the 2025 Bears were in attendance at Wrigley Field. Head Coach Ben Johnson threw out the first pitch back on April 19th. Johnson spoke of his love for the Cubs and Wrigley Field when he was hired, noting that his family made yearly trips to Chicago to take in games after his brother became a season ticket holder. Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream
Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things have not quite gone the way the Chicago Sky had hoped here in the 2025 WNBA season, as the team entered Friday's matchup in Atlanta at 2-6, facing the reaminder of their schedule without point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who is out with a torn ACL. Advertisement But playing against a very good Atlanta squad that has come together quickly after some major offseason upheaval--including bringing in star Brittney Griner--the Sky accomplished something in the second quarter that qualifies as a milestone for the team: For the first time in three games, Chicago held a lead. The play came with 6:32 to go in the second period and the Sky down, 23-22. Rachel Banham took a pass from Ariel Atkins and stepped into a 3-point try near the left break. It was true, and Chicago held the lead, 25-23. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) brings the ball up court in the first quarter against the New York Liberty at Barclays Center. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images It was a big moment considering the way the Sky's previous two games had started. On Saturday against the Fever, the Sky were tied at 2-2 with 8:59 to play but were down by 10 less than five minutes later on their way to a 79-52 blowout. Advertisement It was worse against the Liberty in the Sky's next game, an 85-66 romp. Chicago trailed, 12-0, with 5:49 to go in the first period before the team even managed a point. The Sky's last lead came when they beat Dallas, 94-83, on May 31. The good news for Chicago was that, heading into halftime in Atlanta, despite a late push from the Dream, the Sky still held the lead, 39-38, behind eight points each from frontcourt sophomores Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese.
