Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war
Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.'
The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended.
'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes.
'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.'
Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14.
'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said.
The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium.
Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month.
'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.'

Of the estimated 250 hostages, 140 have been released during negotiations, eight have been rescued, and the bodies of 57 who died in captivity or during rescue attempts have been recovered. It's thought that 20 living hostages are still being held by Hamas and other militants. Over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. In the absence of independent monitoring on the ground, the ministry is the primary source for casualty data relied upon by humanitarian groups, journalists, and international bodies. Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants and cannot be independently verified by TIME. In a military briefing shared with TIME on Wednesday, an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) official said the newly-called reserves are set to be drafted in September and the next phase of the operation into Gaza City will be presented to the 'political echelon' for approval. 'In the coming weeks, we'll see the IDF begin a gradual operation in and around Gaza City,' said a military official. Israel's security cabinet approved new plans, put forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to expand military operations in Gaza on Aug. 8. The expansion of Operation Gideon's Chariots, the renewed Israeli offensive in Gaza which began in May, could come to fruition with the occupation of the entire territory. The IDF has already advanced some military operations surrounding Gaza City. 'The civilian population in the combat zone has been warned and requested to move south for their safety and to minimize the likelihood of harm to uninvolved individuals,' said IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee. The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that an expansion in military operations could risk an 'already catastrophic' situation. 'With more than 80% of Gaza already impacted by evacuation orders, it is unimaginable that civilians could be compelled to move to an even smaller area… After months of relentless hostilities and repeated displacement, the people in Gaza are utterly exhausted,' said the ICRC in a statement on Wednesday. The United Nations maintains that any plans to expand operations in Gaza 'will have a horrific humanitarian impact on people already exhausted, malnourished, bereaved, displaced, and deprived of basics needed for survival.' The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which oversees the Holy Family parish in Gaza, said it is 'closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in Gaza City, particularly in light of recent decisions and the ongoing mobilization towards an imminent invasion.' In a statement shared with TIME, a spokesperson for the patriarchate said members of the Gaza church have reported that 'the sound and impact of bombardments are drawing dangerously close to the parish compound itself.' Israeli advocacy group Peace Now has warned that the 'government's annexation moves' are 'guaranteeing many more years of bloodshed.' Smotrich, alongside fellow far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, was sanctioned by the U.K. and allies in May. He was accused of 'inciting extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights.'

Arsenal make move for Eberechi Eze, player wants move from Crystal Palace
Arsenal have made their move for Eberechi Eze and the player wants to join them from Crystal Palace. Talks over the England international between Palace chairman Steve Parish and counterpart Daniel Levy have taken place over recent days but Arsenal's interest has remained with negotiations now underway between the clubs following the knee injury suffered by Kai Havertz. Palace would not finalise a deal because they wanted the 27-year-old available for Thursday's Conference League play-off match with Fredrikstad. Arsenal have indicated a willingness to meet the conditions and he wants to join them, leaving Spurs with little option but to look elsewhere. The Athletic reported earlier on Wednesday that Arsenal were actively exploring the transfer market to potentially reinforce their attack in the event the Germany international is sidelined for a significant period of time. Eze, who was a boyhood Arsenal fan and played in the club's academy, is keen to make the next step in his career and Palace accept he deserves a top move. Eze ended last season with nine goals in his final 13 matches for Palace, including the winner in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and a goal in the 2-2 draw at Arsenal. Despite speculation over his future, Eze started for Oliver Glasner's side in the Community Shield win over Liverpool and Sunday's Premier League opener against Chelsea. In the modern game, those who can break a player-for-player press with a drop of the shoulder or a driving run forward have never been so valuable — opening up the opposition structure with a moment of individual quality as the dominoes begin to fall. Eze also has the ability to thread a pass forward when spaces open up in front of him, making him a double threat in the attacking third. Acquiring an attacking midfielder of the 27-year-old's creative profile will be a crucial addition in Arsenal's attack, and could well be the difference between a good season and a title-winning one.
