Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war
Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.'
The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended.
'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes.
'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.'
Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14.
'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said.
The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium.
Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month.
'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.'

Israel Calls Up 60,000 Reservists Amid Calls to End Gaza War
Israel has called up 60,000 reservists to report for duty, the military said Wednesday. Another 20,000 reservists will have their service extended under what officials call the next phase of Operation Gideon's Chariots, the codename given to Israel's plan to expand its military offensive in the Gaza Strip. World leaders have sharply criticized the new war plan, with Germany halting all of its arms sales to Israel. Large-scale protests have taken place in Israel, calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war and a deal to facilitate the release of the remaining hostages held in the territory. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which organized the "Israel on Hold' protests, said that over a million people took part in the demonstrations across the country on Sunday. Per the organization, almost 500,000 protesters gathered in Tel Aviv's Hostage Square. Read More: Germany Suspends Gaza-Linked Arms Sales to Israel Over Netanyahu's Plan to Occupy the Strip The Israel-Hamas war started after Hamas launched a terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Of the estimated 250 hostages, 140 have been released during negotiations, eight have been rescued, and the bodies of 57 who died in captivity or during rescue attempts have been recovered. It's thought that 20 living hostages are still being held by Hamas and other militants. Over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. In the absence of independent monitoring on the ground, the ministry is the primary source for casualty data relied upon by humanitarian groups, journalists, and international bodies. Its figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants and cannot be independently verified by TIME. In a military briefing shared with TIME on Wednesday, an IDF (Israel Defense Forces) official said the newly-called reserves are set to be drafted in September and the next phase of the operation into Gaza City will be presented to the 'political echelon' for approval. 'In the coming weeks, we'll see the IDF begin a gradual operation in and around Gaza City,' said a military official. Israel's security cabinet approved new plans, put forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to expand military operations in Gaza on Aug. 8. The expansion of Operation Gideon's Chariots, the renewed Israeli offensive in Gaza which began in May, could come to fruition with the occupation of the entire territory. The IDF has already advanced some military operations surrounding Gaza City. 'The civilian population in the combat zone has been warned and requested to move south for their safety and to minimize the likelihood of harm to uninvolved individuals,' said IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee. Read More: Mother of Israeli Hostage Says Occupation of Gaza Would be 'Death Sentence' for Her Son and Others Israel's action regarding the calling of reserves comes as international groups voice concerns over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions and malnutrition crisis in Gaza. The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that an expansion in military operations could risk an 'already catastrophic' situation. 'With more than 80% of Gaza already impacted by evacuation orders, it is unimaginable that civilians could be compelled to move to an even smaller area… After months of relentless hostilities and repeated displacement, the people in Gaza are utterly exhausted,' said the ICRC in a statement on Wednesday. The United Nations maintains that any plans to expand operations in Gaza 'will have a horrific humanitarian impact on people already exhausted, malnourished, bereaved, displaced, and deprived of basics needed for survival.' The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which oversees the Holy Family parish in Gaza, said it is 'closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in Gaza City, particularly in light of recent decisions and the ongoing mobilization towards an imminent invasion.' In a statement shared with TIME, a spokesperson for the patriarchate said members of the Gaza church have reported that 'the sound and impact of bombardments are drawing dangerously close to the parish compound itself.' Read More: Israel Approves West Bank Settlement Project That Advocacy Groups Say 'Guarantees More Bloodshed' Meanwhile, advocacy groups have also spoken out to condemn Israel's new West Bank settlement plans, which received final approval on Wednesday. Pushed by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, the project, which had been on hold for decades due to global concerns, would isolate the territory by cutting off the West Bank from East Jerusalem. Israeli advocacy group Peace Now has warned that the 'government's annexation moves' are 'guaranteeing many more years of bloodshed.' Smotrich, alongside fellow far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, was sanctioned by the U.K. and allies in May. He was accused of 'inciting extremist violence and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights.'

Arsenal make move for Eberechi Eze, player wants move from Crystal Palace
Arsenal have made their move for Eberechi Eze and the player wants to join them from Crystal Palace. Talks over the England international between Palace chairman Steve Parish and counterpart Daniel Levy have taken place over recent days but Arsenal's interest has remained with negotiations now underway between the clubs following the knee injury suffered by Kai Havertz. Advertisement Spurs had the conditions of a deal agreed with Palace today and the player but are ready to move on to alternative targets if Eze chooses Arsenal. Palace would not finalise a deal because they wanted the 27-year-old available for Thursday's Conference League play-off match with Fredrikstad. Arsenal have indicated a willingness to meet the conditions and he wants to join them, leaving Spurs with little option but to look elsewhere. The Athletic reported earlier on Wednesday that Arsenal were actively exploring the transfer market to potentially reinforce their attack in the event the Germany international is sidelined for a significant period of time. Eze, who was a boyhood Arsenal fan and played in the club's academy, is keen to make the next step in his career and Palace accept he deserves a top move. Eze ended last season with nine goals in his final 13 matches for Palace, including the winner in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and a goal in the 2-2 draw at Arsenal. Despite speculation over his future, Eze started for Oliver Glasner's side in the Community Shield win over Liverpool and Sunday's Premier League opener against Chelsea. Speaking after the goalless draw at Chelsea, Glasner said: 'You are just talking about rumours. Eberechi Eze, as much as I know, has a contract with Crystal Palace, he's a Crystal Palace player. I know Ebs' clause is gone, it's the club's decision and we will see what happens.' Arsenal have already added significantly in attacking areas this summer with Viktor Gyokeres arriving from Sporting CP in a €63.5m move and Noni Madueke joining from London rivals Chelsea for £48.5m. Ethan Nwaneri has also committed his future to the club with a new long-term contract. Eze joined Palace from Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2020 in a deal worth around £17m and has made 167 appearances for the south London club, scoring 40 times. He has been capped 12 times by England, scoring once. Analysis from Arsenal correspondent James McNicholas Arsenal are huge admirers of Eberechi Eze's talent. The club initially explored a move for Eze when contact negotiations with Ethan Nwaneri were at a delicate stage. Once Nwaneri agreed a new deal, Arsenal's interest waned, and they focused on other areas of the squad. Advertisement Throughout, Arsenal have held concerns over price: they have been loathe to meet a Palace valuation in the region of £60million. Their pressing need for attacking reinforcements, particularly in the light of Kai Havertz's injury, may change things. Arsenal are still awaiting the full prognosis for Havertz, but if he is to be absent for a considerable period, it will weaken their attack. Eze is not a direct replacement for Havertz, but his signing would potentially free up the likes of Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard to fill in at centre-forward until the Germany international returns. Aside from Eze's obvious quality, there's an emotional component for Arsenal fans: Eze is a boyhood Arsenal fan who was part of the club's academy. Throw in the prospect of beating Spurs to his signing, and there's plenty for Arsenal supporters to be invested in… Analysis by senior data writer Mark Carey Mikel Arteta has needed to strengthen the left side of his attack this summer. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli's output was in the good-not-great bucket last season, and it is clear that Arsenal needed players with the same attacking ferocity that comes from their right flank with Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. Along with Noni Madueke, Eze's arrival provides that added strength from the left side of the pitch with a truly versatile profile — operating best as a No 10 but able to play on the left side of his team's attack or drop into a left-sided midfield position if required. Whatever his role, he will look to find the space to impose maximum damage to the opposition with the sharpest efficiency. In the modern game, those who can break a player-for-player press with a drop of the shoulder or a driving run forward have never been so valuable — opening up the opposition structure with a moment of individual quality as the dominoes begin to fall. Eze also has the ability to thread a pass forward when spaces open up in front of him, making him a double threat in the attacking third. Acquiring an attacking midfielder of the 27-year-old's creative profile will be a crucial addition in Arsenal's attack, and could well be the difference between a good season and a title-winning one. The Trump-led show of support for Ukraine puts Putin in a bind
If Vladimir Putin left his Alaska meeting with Donald Trump feeling like he had the upper hand, that impression must have quickly dissipated as the president hosted the leaders of Ukraine, France, Britain, Italy, Germany, Finland, the European Union and NATO at an extraordinary White House summit.
