Christy Moore releases spoken word tribute track for President Michael D Higgins
Irish music legend Christy Moore has released a spoken word tribute to President Michael D Higgins.
Music to Our Ears, written by poet Johnny Broderick and produced by Gavin Murphy, is a celebration of the life and legacy of Ireland's President in the last year of his tenure.
Speaking of how the work came about, Moore said: "I was working in Gavin Murphy's Studio. Gavin shared music he was composing for a poem John Broderick had written in advance of President Michael D's departure from Áras and Úachtaráin. I read the poem and listened to the music. I offered to recite the words. Claddagh [Records] heard it and suggested we make it available to the public.
"I think it is a beautiful tribute to our esteemed President and his Family. I think Johnny B's words express what many of us feel about Michael D. and our First Lady, Sabina."
President Higgins was elected President of Ireland in 2011 and is currently serving his second term.
Moore has released Music to Our Ears alongside a lyric video to accompany the powerful tribute.
It opens with the lines: "There is an aura that surrounds you, with decency you are blessed. There is a warmth in your presence, for every welcome guest."
It continues: "You are a voice for the voiceless, like thunder in the plain. An empathetic ear for the afflicted, selfless, humble, but never vain."
Music to Our Ears concludes: "Statesmanlike and diplomatic, charismatic without fears. You are a national treasure treasured, you have been music to our ears."
The track will feature on the extended edition of Moore's No.1 album A Terrible Beauty.

IRISH Music and Dance London (IMDL) will be holding their annual Irish Hooley at Bloomsbury Theatre, London — the organisation's annual profile and fundraiser — on Thursday, June 26 from 7:30pm. Frankie Gavin's place in the pantheon of Irish musicians When people talk about the giants of Irish fiddle, they often start with John Sheahan, Frankie Gavin, and Kevin Burke — three very different musicians who each brought the instrument into new territory in the second half of the 20th century. Frankie Gavin will be demonstrating in London at the end of the month why he is such a revered figure in Irish traditional music. But it is not just his music which elevates him to superstardom. As The Irish Post 's Michael McDonagh puts it: 'Frankie Gavin is basically the Irish version of blues legend John Mayall insomuch as he has had so many musical reincarnations and versions of his bands. Mayall's Bluesbreakers acted as an incubator for talent — Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce (both later of Cream), Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie (the three of whom would form Fleetwood Mac), Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones) and many more. De Dannan, to some extent, performed that service for Irish music. Each new line-up always introduced exceptional new players and singers who went on to forge their own careers: Dolores Keane, Maura O'Connell, Mary Black, Eleanor Shanley, Tommy Fleming, Martin O'Connor, Jackie Daly — all started their careers playing with one of the many De Dannan incarnations.' Sheahan, the classically trained Dubliner, added grace and precision to The Dubliners' raw, raucous sound, elevating the fiddle's role in the ballad tradition. Gavin, the East Galway firebrand, injected traditional music with a bolt of virtuosic energy and showmanship, blending trad with jazz, rock, and Baroque flourishes. Burke, in the Bothy Band, represented a different sort of mastery — smooth, elegant, and rhythmically assured. He helped carry the Sligo style across the Atlantic, becoming a pillar of the Irish-American trad revival. Each of the three left a different kind of fingerprint on the music. Sheahan gave the fiddle new legitimacy in the Irish folk mainstream because of his classical training; Gavin dazzled with his flair and innovation; and Burke brought refinement and internationalism. Between them, they demonstrated how adaptable — and how expressive — the Irish fiddle could be. If Gavin brought speed, brilliance, and showmanship to the Irish fiddle, Tommy Peoples brought something darker and more idiosyncratic — the Donegal style of phrasing and intensity that transformed how players thought about rhythm and ornamentation. Much of Donegal music exhibits flourishes from Scottish tradition, and Peoples played it to the full. Less of a household name than Gavin, his influence on fellow fiddlers is arguably greater. Martin Hayes has frequently cited Peoples as a foundational inspiration, while Gavin absorbed much of his fire and pulse — a revered document of personal and regional style. Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh, whose importance lies not just in her musicianship — though her Donegal fiddle is among the most lyrical and finely tuned in the tradition — but in her leadership and visibility. As co-founder and frontwoman of Altan, Ní Mhaonaigh brought regional Donegal style to international concert halls, and did so while singing in Irish, preserving and popularising both the music and the language. Her playing is nimble and spirited, rooted in the north-west, but never insular. In a tradition still catching up on gender balance, she stands out as a pioneering female presence at the top level — a touchstone for many young players today. Together, these six — Sheahan, Gavin, Burke, Peoples, Hayes, and Ní Mhaonaigh — form a kind of modern pantheon of Irish fiddling: Gavin the firebrand, Hayes the philosopher, Sheahan the classicist, Peoples the storm, Burke the stylist, and Ní Mhaonaigh the bearer of language, place, and poise. Each reflects a different aspect of the tradition's evolution — and none could be said to truly eclipse the others. The Trad Gathering IMDL's London-wide youth project, The Trad Gathering, features 30 young traditional Irish musicians from different music schools and teachers, led by Karen Ryan and Pete Quinn. On June 26, the group will be playing music from the repertoire of prominent Irish music teacher, button accordion player, lilter, whistler and céilí drummer, Tommy Maguire (North Leitrim). The Trad Gathering was jointly commissioned in 2008 by the BBC Proms and Return to Camden Town Festival. In recent years, the group has been celebrating music from the repertoires of a number of prominent members of the London Irish music scene. Conor McGregor Ibiza punch eyewitnesses detail what they saw in nightclub
Eyewitnesses have recalled the events that unfolded after footage emerged appearing to show Conor McGregor throwing punches inside an Ibiza nightclub. In the early hours of Tuesday, at Pacha nightclub, The Sun released footage that allegedly showed McGregor appearing to peer down to address an unidentified man in the middle of the dancefloor. Merely moments later, the 36-year-old Irishman appears to throw two punches. The partygoer hit the deck, and onlookers have since come forward to recount their version of the alleged incident. One individual - who saw the whole thing - claimed there did not appear to be any consequences for the former dual-weight UFC champion. "Clearly something's been said to annoy him and he's reacted very badly. The guy seemed to fall to the floor, and his mates came to pick him up and get him away," he told The Sun. "There [didn't appear to be any] consequences for Conor." Another said: "About five people fell to the floor as the guy stumbled back. It was a bit like bowling pins, but the guy was really shaken." They added: "About a minute later, the bouncers came and got him on the back and took him out of the club, because he had annoyed Conor. It was right before close anyway. There was no messing around; they just removed him. Conor left through the garden a bit later; he didn't look very happy." The confrontation occurred just hours after McGregor was spotted on the island with TV personality Katie Price. The UFC star was wearing red shorts, a cap, and sunglasses, and puffing on a cigar. Price shared a photo of the two on her Instagram, captioning it: "You legend," after McGregor tagged her in his own story and wrote: "Forever." Tottenham defender and Austria international Kevin Danso also posted a picture with the former dual-weight UFC champion. Following the alleged incident, McGregor posted a series of updates on social media. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: "You won't speak bad about my country and its people and that's ever. Vote McGregor." A few hours later, he shared several photos of himself on Instagram, including one with a group of men and another of himself underneath a photo of Al Pacino from the 1983 film Scarface. It is not the first time McGregor has lost his temper whilst partying in Ibiza. Three years ago, he stamped on a fan's hat after a fan threw it towards him asked for him to sign it while he was celebrating his 34th birthday. McGregor gave the individual a sarcastic thumbs up before throwing insults at the fan. McGregor hasn't stepped into the Octagon since his defeat to long-standing adversary Dustin Poirier back in 2021. He was due to make his UFC comeback last year against Michael Chandler, but had to pull out due to an injury sustained during training. Whether or not the Irish fighter will return to competitive action remains uncertain. However, he has dropped hints of a potential comeback by posting several training videos over recent weeks.
