Let the Health DG handle Penang doctor molest case, says Health Minister
He was commenting on a question about the said doctor still practising despite the alleged sexual harassment incidents at a government hospital.
Dzulkefly said this on Sunday (July 27) after launching the book titled 'Crisis and Community: Covid-19 in Malaysia', a compilation of essays on the Covid-19 crisis by all levels of society edited by Bridget Welsh.
'That matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Health director-general Dr Mahathar.
'As the Health Minister, I act based on the advice and information provided by the Director-General. So we will rely on his office to handle this. We will try to resolve this,' said Dzulkefly.
On July 24, Penang police said that they had been instructed by the Deputy Public Prosecutor's (DPP) office to carry out further investigations on the doctor who was caught for allegedly molesting his female patients four times.
Acting Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin then said three of the cases were reported in the northeast district, while the fourth and the most recent one was in the southwest district.
"We submitted the investigation papers for the three original cases reported in the northeast district to the DPP's office.
"We recently received instructions from the DPP's office to further investigate the cases,' said DCP Alwi.
He said in regard to the fourth case in the southwest district, we have started the investigation.
He said it is believed the 43-year-old doctor, who was said to be working in a government hospital in the northeast district, was transferred to a government clinic in the southwest district.
"The recent incident occurred at a private clinic in the southwest district where he was doing locum,' said DCP Alwi.

COMESA Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe echoed Nalumango's remarks, saying that health is central to the organization's regional agenda. She said COMESA has established a Health Desk to coordinate regional health initiatives, mobilize resources, and build member states' capacities to respond to current and future challenges in collaboration with technical and development partners. "Strong health systems are not optional -- they are economic enablers and require increased investment. Investing in health is not a cost; it is a strategic investment in regional stability, productivity, and prosperity," Kapwepwe said.

Five deaths linked to vape use
A TOTAL of five deaths linked to the use of e-cigarettes or vapes were reported between 2019 and June 2025, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said his ministry received a total of 83 reported cases of diseases linked to the use of smoking products, including e-cigarettes or vapes, as of June 2025. 'Of these, 44 cases involved serious complications affecting the lungs, while the remaining 39 cases involved other health complications not directly related to the lungs. 'Although there have been deaths involving individuals who used e-cigarettes or vape, a direct causal link between vape use and the cause of death is difficult to confirm, due to limited clinical evidence and other contributing factors,' he said in a written reply to Wan Razali Wan Nor (PN-Kuantan). Wan Razali wanted the Health Ministry to reveal the number of deaths related to the use of e-cigarettes and vapes. He also asked the ministry to explain its efforts to curb the use of e-cigarettes and vapes among children and teenagers. Dr Dzulkefly said the ministry is currently strengthening surveillance to identify the causes of deaths associated with smoking products. This effort, he added, is in line with the implementation of Section 21 of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, which gives the minister the authority to ban or restrict the import, manufacturing, distribution, or sale of smoking products, based on the recommendations of a committee established under that section. He also said that in 2024, a total of 230 primary school pupils were found to have smoking problems and 193 of them have undergone smoking cessation interventions. For secondary school students, 44,211 were identified to have smoking problems and 36,870 have undergone interventions, he said. To curb e-cigarette and vape use among children and teenagers, the ministry has taken several measures, including enforcing regulations under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 to protect them from being exposed to and influenced by smoking habits, said Dr Dzulkefly. 'The ministry is also implementing a strict prohibition on the sale and purchase of all smoking products, including electronic cigarettes and vapes, especially to those who are underaged,' he added. In addition, the ministry also implemented prevention and smoking cessation intervention programmes for school students through the Oral Health Without Smoking Practice Program. He said smoking cessation services are also provided through 857 Quit Smoking Clinics and 111 One Stop Centres for Addiction across the country. 'Parents or guardians can bring children who are involved in smoking or using electronic cigarettes or vapes to these clinics to get professional treatment and cessation support,' he said.

MOH boosts staff and upgrades Lahad Datu Hospital for better healthcare
LAHAD DATU: The Ministry of Health (MOH) will increase manpower and conduct urgent infrastructure repairs at Lahad Datu Hospital to improve service delivery and patient safety. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that the hospital, classified as a minor specialist facility with 13 areas of expertise, needs additional staff to meet operational demands. 'We have identified 13 medical officers for the first phase of deployment, with seven more to follow in the second phase,' he told reporters during a working visit. Dr Dzulkefly highlighted critical upgrades, including overdue repairs to the Labour Ward, scheduled under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'I have personally observed structural cracks in the Labour Ward that have persisted for years. This is a safety issue that cannot be compromised,' he said. He added that outdated facilities will also be refurbished as a priority. The visit is part of his three-day inspection tour of 22 healthcare facilities across six districts in Sabah, ending tomorrow. - Bernama
