Indonesian Alwi eyes world stage spotlight after taking Viktor's spot
Indonesia's Alwi Farhan. - AFP PETALING JAYA: Indonesia's rising star Alwi Farhan could be the one to make the loudest noise at the World Championships after earning a last-minute call-up. The world No. 23 was promoted from the reserves list following the withdrawal of Denmark's two-time world champion Viktor Axelsen, who pulled out of the men's singles event from Aug 25-31 in Paris due to injury. Just last week, Alwi underlined his form by clinching the World Tour Super 300 Macau Open title, defeating Malaysia's Justin Hoh in the final. Now, the 20-year-old is determined to make the most of his debut appearance on badminton's biggest stage. "I'm really thankful to get this opportunity. I never expected to play in the world meet," said Alwi in an interview posted in the Indonesian National Badminton Association (PBSI) website. "I'm excited as this will be my first world meet but I need to control my emotions. I want to make the most of this opportunity and gain lots of experience. "I want to prepare well and give my all. Now that it's confirmed, I need to focus fully on training." Alwi has been Indonesia's most promising player since winning the world junior title in 2023. The youngster has steadily moved up the rankings after progressing to the senior level and is currently Indonesia's second highest ranked men's singles player behind world No. 5 Jonatan Christie. Alwi only started competing in World Tour Super 750 and 1000 tournaments this year and the world meet will present him with another platform to showcase his abilities. Meanwhile, Jonatan and Anthony Ginting will be the other Indonesian representatives in the men's singles in Paris. Surprisingly, no Indonesian shuttler has won a medal in the men's singles in the prestigious event since Tommy Sugiarto claimed bronze in the 2014 edition in Copenhagen. Taufik Hidayat was the last Indonesian to win the men's singles title when he triumphed in 2005 in Anaheim.

Aunt's matchmaking costs woman RM2.3 million in online love scam
GEORGE TOWN: A 53-year-old woman has lost more than RM2.3 million in an online love scam after being deceived by a man posing as a Singaporean businessman based in Canada, introduced to her by her aunt. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victim's ordeal began in February last year, when her aunt introduced her to the man. According to a police report lodged by the victim, Alwi said the woman's aunt had met the suspect at a seminar in Kuala Lumpur and had intended to matchmake the two. He said that throughout the relationship, the victim only communicated with the suspect via WhatsApp. "In March last year, the suspect claimed he was involved in an electric grid installation project in Oman and needed assistance in transferring funds to purchase raw materials. "He cited unstable internet access in Oman as the reason for seeking help. "Believing she was in a genuine relationship, the victim agreed to help and accessed the suspect's account to make the transactions. "She was later contacted by someone claiming the transfer had failed due to cross-border issues, and was told she needed to pay additional banking service charges, with promises of reimbursement," he said in a statement today. Between March 28 and Aug 18 last year, Alwi said, the victim made 58 transactions amounting to RM1,936,818.67 to nine different local bank accounts provided by the suspect. In September last year, the suspect told the victim that he had deposited a US$404,500 cheque into "Heritage Asset Bank Oman" to repay her. She was then contacted by someone posing as a customer service officer from the bank's "Malaysian branch," who claimed she needed to pay banking charges to cash the cheque. "From Sept 25 last year to July 4 this year, the victim made another 13 transactions totalling RM399,407 to five local bank accounts. "The victim only realised she had been scammed when the excuses became increasingly unreasonable and she suffered significant financial losses," he added. The victim lodged a police report on July 8.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: An Indonesian man died after a struggle with the police while being arrested for going on a rampage and acting aggressively at Taman Bukit Jambul in Penang last Saturday. Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said an autopsy found that the man, believed to be an undocumented migrant, died of a heart attack. 'At about 6.20pm on Saturday, police received a public complaint about a man behaving violently and wielding an iron rod at Block D, Taman Bukit Jambul. 'A police team was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers were attacked by the suspect, who acted aggressively, punching one of the policemen several times in the face and the back of the head, and attempting to seize his firearm,' Bernama reported him as saying today. Alwi said members of the public helped police subdue the man, who was taken to the Sungai Nibong police station. He said the man suddenly collapsed while at the police station and was rushed to Penang Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Alwi said an autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a heart attack. The case has been classified as sudden death. 'We received two police reports related to the incident, one about the suspect smashing a resident's car window with an iron rod, and the other about a break-in at the resident's flat unit. 'Both acts were committed by the suspect before his outburst. Concerned for their safety, the residents contacted the police after witnessing the man behaving uncontrollably and aggressively,' he said. Alwi said further investigations were underway to identify the man, as he had no identification documents and residents claimed they did not know who he was. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
