Nvidia posts strong growth despite ongoing tariff challenges
The company reported sales of 44.1 billion dollars (£32.7 billion) for the first quarter, higher than the 22.1 billion dollars (£16.4 billion) generated this time last year.
The US technology giant unveiled its financial results for the first three months of 2025 on Wednesday.
Nvidia predicted its revenue for the May–July period would be about 45 billion dollars (£35.5 billion).
The forecast includes an estimated eight billion dollars (£6.3 billion) loss in sales to China due to the export controls during its fiscal second quarter, after the restrictions cost it about 2.5 billion dollars (£2 billion) in revenue during the first quarter.
As the second most valuable listed company in the world, behind Microsoft, Nvidia is watched closely by global traders.
It was among the global technology firms to suffer sharp drops in their share price following the president's 'liberation day' tariff announcements last month.
However, they have rallied since and most of the losses suffered on Wall Street in the wake of the announcements have been regained.
Nvidia said it has been informed by the US government that it needs a licence to export its H20 AI chip to China, including Hong Kong, for the 'indefinite future'.
Founder and CEO Jensen Huang said global demand for Nvidia AI infrastructure remains 'incredibly strong'.
He recently blasted the country's wider export controls as a 'failure', saying they had backfired against US companies by spurring on Chinese developers.
Meanwhile, the boss has tried to soothe investor concerns about Chinese AI firm DeepSeek emerging earlier this year as a lower-cost rival to the US giant.

Microsoft unit in Russia to file for bankruptcy, database shows
May 30 (Reuters) - One of Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O), opens new tab subsidiaries in Russia plans to file for bankruptcy, according to a note published on the official Fedresurs registry on Friday. Microsoft did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. President Vladimir Putin said this week that foreign service providers like Microsoft and Zoom (ZM.O), opens new tab should be "throttled" in Russia to make way for domestic software solutions. Microsoft continued providing key services in Russia after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but in June 2022 it said it was significantly scaling down its operations due to changes to the economic outlook and the impact on its business there. The U.S. tech giant had already removed Russian state-owned media outlet RT's mobile apps from the Windows App store and banned advertisements on Russian state-sponsored media in the days after the invasion. The note posted on Fedresurs on Friday said that Microsoft Rus LLC was intending to declare bankruptcy. The TASS news agency reported that Microsoft has three other Russian units - Microsoft Development Centre Rus, Microsoft Mobile Rus and Microsoft Payments Rus. It was not immediately clear how those units might be affected. Alphabet-owned Google's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in 2022, saying that the seizure of its bank account by Russian authorities had made it untenable for its Russian office to function, including paying Russia-based employees, suppliers and vendors.

Shein reportedly eyeing Hong Kong listing as London IPO plans halt
Shein is seemingly changing course. The Chinese fast fashion giant is believed to now be looking to Hong Kong for its initial public offering (IPO) after plans to list in London grinded to a halt. According to sources for Reuters, Shein has turned to Hong Kong after it failed to get Chinese regulators to approve of its London Stock Exchange plans. While one source said the e-tailer is planning to file a draft prospectus with the Hong Kong stock exchange in the coming weeks, two other sources suggested Shein is hoping to go public in the region within the year. Shein had been pursuing a listing in the UK since early 2024 after previously looking to New York for its IPO. In the US, it already faced opposition from politicians who had argued to block the filing, calling for better disclosure of Shein's Chinese operations. The company then turned to London as an alternative route, yet was also confronted by similar challenges from local market authorities, NGOs and fashion industry leaders. By April 2025, however, it was reported that the retailer had received approval from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for the London IPO, and thus notified the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). While Shein had anticipated backing from the CSRC, a source for Reuters said the company experienced an unforeseen delay and limited communication from the organisation. Further factors, like allegations that Shein's products utilised cotton from China's Xinjiang region, had also complicated the London IPO, Reuters noted. FashionUnited has contacted Shein with a request to comment.
