Operation Sindoor: Drones from Turkey, China's role; panel discusses various aspects of Indo-Pak standoff
As Operation Sindoor unfolded, a question that often came up was about the involvement of China and other foreign powers in the conflict between India and Pakistan. At the Pune International Centre on Friday evening, a distinguished panel discussed various aspects of Operation Sindoor and China, inevitably, came up.
'My own feeling is that China will continue to use Pakistan as their proxy. In fact, Pakistan is almost a vassal state of China and gets goodies like JF-17 jets and the China-Pakistan economic corridor. But, China will avoid getting directly involved with us. At this stage, even the Chinese would not like a setback to their economy by getting involved in even a limited war along the Line of Actual Control with us. They are not going to get involved in a hurry unless it becomes apparent that Pakistan is collapsing or is imploding,' said Lt Gen Vinayak Patankar (retd).
The audience heard how the Chinese air force has progressed so rapidly that it has got the US worried. The US Chief of Staff has remarked that, by 2030, the Chinese air force will be bigger than the US Air Force.
Apart from Lt Gen Patankar, the participants at the discussion were Gautam Bambawale, the former High Commissioner to Pakistan and Ambassador to Bhutan and China, Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury, Captain D K Sharma, former spokesperson of the Navy, Col Vinayak Bhat, a satellite imagery specialist, and Maj Gen Nitin Gadkari, Director of the Pune International Centre. All the panelists have retired from the services. The conversation touched upon the terrorists, the public morale in India and Pakistan and the assessment of the imageries before and after the Indian missile strikes in Pakistan.
The packed hall at PIC for the panel discussion had, only the evening before, watched on television as drones and missiles from Pakistan had targeted Indian cities and were neutralised. While giving details about such operations, the panel reflected on what it meant that the drones were imported from Turkey. 'The government of India has had its formal briefing for today and one of the things which were highlighted was that the drones which were used last night by the Pakistanis to target 23 cities in India were all Turkish made. That aspect has now come to the fore. I think it will lead to a deterioration in India-Turkey relations,' Bambawale said.
The question about the role of Bangladesh came at the very end of the session from a member of the audience, Vasanta Ramaswamy. 'Bangladesh is becoming close to Pakistan,' she said. Bambawale admitted that there has been a change in the people running Bangladesh and they were not as friendly to India as previous governments 'but India has a lot of activity in Bangladesh, such as developmental activity'. 'I have a feeling that the relation with Bangladesh will turn full circle and come back to a situation that we are happy with, just as it has done with the Maldives,' he said.

Congress in damage control mode over Satheesan's Jamaat remarks
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As leader of opposition V D Satheesan's attempt to 'whitewash' Jamaat-e-Islami, backfired politically in Nilambur, the Congress has started damage control efforts. KPCC president Sunny Joseph has met powerful Muslim and Christian leaders in this regard. The move comes days before the visit of Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi to Nilambur which is part of her LS constituency. Sunny Joseph, who is close to Thamarassery Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil, met the latter on Friday. The meeting came after the Catholic Congress under the powerful Thamarassery Diocese issued a strong statement against Congress - Welfare Party tie-up. According to sources close to the Church, Sunny Joseph held talks with Catholic Congress leaders. The KPCC president also met Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, the president of Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulama, on Thursday. There is criticism among UDF partners that the opposition leader's 'certificate' to the Jamaat-e-Islami was an unwanted one. They are of the view that it gave both the CPM and BJP a political weapon which could have a far-reaching effect even in national politics. 'There is still suspicion over the controversial stand of Jamaat on Indian democracy, religious state and Constitution,' a Congress PAC member told TNIE. 'It is no surprise that almost all prominent Muslim community organisations including Samastha Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulma, and Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen, and the Catholic Congress, a lay organisation of Syro-Malabar Catholics of Thamarassery Diocese, had come out strongly against the Jamaat-e-Islami- Congress alleged tie-up,' he added. The Congress-UDF leadership has decided not to entertain questions about Jamaat-e-Islami, Welfare Party and Congress 'tie-up'. AICC general secretary K C Venugopal's attempt to evade questions about the controversy, and senior leader K Muraleedharan playing down the issue are seen as part of this strategy. The party has decided to focus on the governance of the LDF government. There is also apprehension that though Venugopal's attack against CM's alleged anti- Malappuram remark was a success, the Jamaat controversy spoiled the edge. 'There are chances that the RSS -BJP may use the Jamaat controversy against the Gandhi family and the Congress in north India,' a senior Congress leader told TNIE. 'As state assembly elections are approaching, we do not want any kind of political debate on that,' he said.

State govt to join hands with 5 leading foreign universities for education city in Navi Mumbai
MUMBAI: The state government will present Letters of Intent (LOIs) to five leading foreign universities as part of the 'Mumbai Rising – Creating an International Education City' initiative. The official ceremony will take place at noon today at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai. The five universities invited to establish campuses in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai include the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the University of Western Australia, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be the chief guest at the event. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil are also expected to attend. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Officials said that the project could not only improve academic standards in India but also promote cultural exchange and collaboration between Indian and international students and faculty. 'The International Education City will help bring global education to our doorstep and create opportunities for students from across India,' a government official stated.
