Tanaiste to meet mother of murdered peacekeeper
It comes after Natasha Rooney expressed her disappointment at a 'lack of justice' for her son.
Pte Rooney, 24, from Newtowncunningham in Co Donegal, was killed when a convoy of Irish troops serving with a UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon was ambushed and fired upon on December 14, 2022.
The shooting happened near the town of Al-Aqbiya in a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Pte Rooney was from the 121 Infantry Battalion of the Defence Forces.
On Monday, Mr Harris said he had been informed of the completion of a military tribunal in Beirut for those indicted for the murder of Pte Rooney.
One man was sentenced to death, but he remains at large. A number of other men were also convicted in relation to other offences over the shooting.
Ms Rooney expressed disappointment and contended it was 'not justice'.
In a statement released through Phoenix Law, she said the perpetrator of her son's murder 'has been untraceable and untraced for many years'.
She added: 'The verdict in reality is nothing more than a headline to the Lebanese authorities who masquerade this sham trial process as a semblance of justice for my son.'
Ms Rooney also urged Mr Harris to speak to her 'before seeking to speak for me, in his public statements'.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Mr Harris said he is meeting Ms Rooney next week.
'I'm going to preserve any further comment 'til I meet her,' he said.
'Natasha is a grieving mother fighting for justice for her son who died while serving with absolute distinction wearing the uniform of Oglaigh Na hEireann. He has my absolute and total respect, as does his family.
'I look forward to meeting with Natasha and engaging with her directly next week.'

In a statement provided to police, the schoolgirl said her dad passed away a few years ago, and her mum, the main breadwinner, asked their house owner to find a match for her. The house owner introduced a 40-year-old man to the girl, and the marriage was performed in front of several people, despite the 13-year-old objecting. Nandigama police registered the case under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The man has not yet been arrested. It comes after a 45-year-old man married a six-year-old girl in Afghanistan last month. The man, who is already married to two other women, bought the young girl from her family. The wedding took place in Marjah district, with both the child's father and the groom since detained but not formally charged. The Taliban has instructed the groom to wait until the child reaches nine before he can take her home. Child marriage remains rampant in Afghanistan, often fuelled by poverty, compelling families to sell their daughters into matrimony as a means of survival. A local activist named Mahbob despaired while speaking to The Afghan Times: "There are many families in our village who have given away their daughters for money. No one helps them. People are desperate." This bartering of girls for marriage, known as walwar, involves trading them for cash based on attributes like appearance, health, and education. However, financial desperation isn't the sole motive; some girls are traded to settle blood feuds between enemies. Amiri, 50 from Uruzgan, opened up about marrying off her 14-year-old daughter to a 27-year-old man for 300,000 Afghanis. She admitted, "I knew she was too young, but we had nothing at home. I used the money to feed the rest of my family." A UN report last year indicated that such oppression has sparked a 25 per cent rise in child and forced marriages. The International Criminal Court has slammed the treatment of Afghan women as a crime against humanity, issuing arrest warrants for two top Taliban officials.

Seven dogs die in hellhole flat as woman jailed over appalling cruelty
Stacey Harris has locked up for eight months after her dogs were left to die in squalor. A woman has been jailed after eight dogs were left to die in a hellhole flat. Stacey Harris, 39, appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court on Tuesday July 29, where she was sentenced to eight months' in jail and handed a lifetime ban from owning or keeping dogs. She was found guilty of seven charges - six of causing unnecessary suffering and one of failing to meet basic welfare needs. Only one dog survived the appalling conditions inside the abandoned flat in Dundee. The court heard how Harris starved the dogs for at least two months and failed to provide food or seek treatment for painful eye and ear infections. A probe was launched by the SSPCA after a tip-off was made about suspected dog abandonment in October 2024. A Scottish SPCA Inspector said 'We received a complaint that a property had been abandoned and the dogs inside had not been attended to for over a week." When officers arrived at the property, they could see an emaciated Sharpei-type dog with visibly infected eyes. Upon entering the flat, the house was said to have an overwhelming smell of faeces and urine, with the entire property being was littered with dog excrement, rubbish, and debris. Upon entering the house, a tan and white American Bulldog - the sole survivor - was seen to be so malnourished it could not walk and had to be carried out. A vet later confirmed the dog had recently given birth and was suffering from dehydration, skin, and ear infections that had gone untreated for weeks. She was found to be extremely underweight, with ribs, spine, and hip bones visible. The SSPCA have not seen any report of the pregnancy or about the puppies of the surviving bulldog. After walking upstairs, inspectors found the remains of a dead Sharpie dog stuck in a bedroom doorway. The second dead dog, a Sharpei cross, was found lying on the floor of the second bedroom surrounded by dog faeces, empty dog food bags and rubbish. The bodies of a 12-year-old chihuahua and year old Sharpei were never found and were presumed eaten. Three other one year and four months old Sharpei-type dogs, who were all emaciated, were removed from the property using specialist equipment. They were later euthanised on welfare grounds due to the severity of their untreated conditions. The bodies of the two dead Sharpei dogs were taken for postmortem which confirmed both had died from prolonged starvation. The Inspector added: 'This was an extremely distressing case where multiple animals suffered unnecessarily for a prolonged period which could have been easily avoided by contacting an animal welfare organisation for help if needed. 'It is hard to comprehend how any individual cannot attend to their own pets knowing they were locked up in a property. As a result, the Scottish SPCA and the Inspector involved are very pleased with Harris's sentencing and hope it acts as a deterrent to others.'
