Former Washington NFL stars named July 4 Parade Grand Marshals
The two former Redskins stars are not only celebrating our nation's independence in Middletown, but they are also being honored, as they have been named grand marshals for the July 4 Middletown parade. A third grand marshal has been named, Lauryn Ricketts, a meteorologist with WRC-TV and WTOP-FM in Washington, D.C.
Portis before playing with the Redskins, was a Miami Hurricane prior to being drafted by the Denver Broncos. When Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey threatened to boycott training camp if they used the NFL franchise tag on him, Washington traded Bailey and a second-round draft choice to the Broncos for Portis.
Playing in 113 NFL games, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards, averaging 4.4 yards a carry and scoring 75 NFL touchdowns. Following his NFL career, Portis was voted one of the Washington Redskins' greatest 80 players to mark the 80th anniversary of the franchise.
Kerrigan played in 172 NFL games, all but one season in Washington, where he accumulated 95.5 quarterback sacks. The former first-round draft choice (16th overall) by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL draft, accumulated 333 solo tackles while also forcing 26 fumbles.
Playing 10 seasons in Washington (his one final season in Philadelphia), Kerrigan became the Washington all-time quarterback sacks leader with 95.5. The four-time Pro Bowler led the NFL in 2016 with 18 tackles for a loss.
'We're excited that they're coming and we're looking forward to a wonderful July 4th celebration,' Mayor Charles Harbaugh said. 'We're really throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it.'
The mayor was referring to a full slate of activities on tap for Independence Day, starting with a Big Ball softball tournament at 8 a.m. and ending with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Events will be held at various locations in town but most will occur in Middletown Community Park.
The centerpiece of Middletown's July 4th celebration is its parade. Organizer Katie Garrett said that as of Thursday morning, 76 entries were set to participate. The parade will step off at 5 p.m. and wind its way along Main Street.

Dodgers' pitchers get torched during historic lopsided loss to hated Astros
They are two long-time Dodger villains, hated for two vastly different reasons. As the last remaining position player from the Houston Astros' trash-can-banging, and (in the eyes of most Dodgers fans) World Series-stealing 2017 championship team, Jose Altuve always receives a rude welcome from the fans at Chavez Ravine. As one of the most productive visiting players in Dodger Stadium history, Christian Walker often shuts them up. In the Houston Astros' 18-1 Independence Day rout on Friday, both added another tortured chapter to the Dodgers' history against the team. Altuve went three-for-three with a double, two home runs, two walks and five RBIs. Walker went four-for-five with one long ball and four RBIs. On a day starting pitcher Ben Casparius once again struggled (giving up six runs in three innings), reliever Noah Davis gave up 10 runs in the sixth inning alone (the most the Dodgers had surrendered in one inning since 1999), and most of a sold-out crowd stuck around for every painful minute (waiting in somber silence for a postgame fireworks show), that was plenty to lift the surging Astros to most lopsided defeat the Dodgers have ever suffered at Dodger Stadium. Six weeks ago, the retooled Astros were one game above .500 and 3 ½ games out of first place in the American League West; seemingly missing the other 2017 stars who have departed the franchise since their sign-stealing scandal came to light five years ago. But now, they have won 27 of their last 37, own the second-best record in the AL, and are suddenly looking like unlikely title contenders; even after turning over almost the entirety of the roster from that infamous 2017 season. 'Certainly, there's been some history with our organizations,' manager Dave Roberts said pregame when asked if any lingering feelings remained from the Astros' sign-stealing scandal. 'But if you look at it in reality, most of those guys are gone. So it certainly doesn't have any bearing on this series this weekend.' Instead, in their most lopsided loss of the season, the Dodgers had bigger concerns to worry about Friday, with Altuve and Walker at the top of the list. Altuve received his typical reception from the Dodgers faithful, serenaded with booming boos and loud chants of 'cheater' during each of his at-bats. However, he followed Isaac Paredes' leadoff homer in the first with a double off the wall. He took Casparius deep for a two-run home run on a curveball in the third. He added an exclamation point with a three-run homer in the Astros' 10-run sixth — the most runs the Dodgers (56-33) had allowed in one inning since Fernando Tatis' historic two grand slam inning in April 1999 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Walker was every bit as dangerous. A 34-year-old slugger who dominated the Dodgers (and, most confoundingly, Clayton Kershaw in particular) during an eight-year career with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Walker was already emerging from an early-season slump in his first year with the Astros (53-25) entering this weekend's series. Then, back in the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium, he orchestrated a monster performance of his own from the five-spot of the Houston order. In his first at-bat, Walker plated Altuve with a single the other way. Then, two batters after Altuve's big fly in the third, Casparius left a fastball down the middle that Walker whacked for his 28th career home run against the Dodgers — and 20th at Dodger Stadium. Only nine other players have hit that many home runs as visitors at the ballpark during their careers, a list that includes Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt and Willie Stargell, as well as Barry Bonds. Walker also made a contribution in the sixth-inning onslaught. After Davis gave up one run on two singles and two walks, the recently called-up right-hander plunked Walker with the bases loaded to force in another score, losing his grip on an 0-and-2 sweeper that left him visibly rattled on the mound. Sensing Davis' frustration, Roberts came to the bump for a motivational pep-talk; eliciting memories of the mid-game hug he delivered to journeyman reliever Yohan Ramirez last season in Cincinnati. This time, however, the mound visit had little effect. In the next at-bat, Davis threw a hanging sweeper that Victor Caratini belted for a grand slam. What was already a laugher became a full-fledged Fourth of July disaster.

Neto starts, Pedro on bench
Follow live reaction after a late own goal led Chelsea past Palmeiras and into the Club World Cup last four Getty Images Getty Images Pedro Neto starts for Chelsea tonight after Enzo Maresca said yesterday that playing tonight would be his choice following the tragic death of his Portugal international team-mate Diogo Jota. Joao Pedro is on the bench for the first time after joining from Brighton, while Romeo Lavia is not fit to play after dealing with a muscular issue last time out. With the game played in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July — a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the nation's independence from Great Britain — Ferreira was keen to remind any neutral fans of where their allegiances should lie. 'Yes, we are the underdog,' Ferreira told reporters at Lincoln Financial Field Stadium yesterday. 'It can be a good opportunity for the local people to join up with us against the English. Because tomorrow — if I am not wrong — it is Independence Day, against? The English!' 'So join us, come with us because we need your support.' Getty Images Enzo Maresca said yesterday that he will let Pedro Neto decide if he is in the right frame of mind to play in tonight's match, after the tragic death of his international teammate Diogo Jota. 'He's very sad,' manager Maresca said of Neto at his pre-match press conference. 'More than sad, but we are also close to Pedro to support him in this moment. 'It's completely Pedro's decision (if he wants to play). I had a chat this morning with Pedro and we support him. Whatever decision he will take, it is the correct one and we are going to support him in any case, so it doesn't matter if he will be on the pitch. We will see how he is feeling tomorrow.' Liverpool's Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed in a car accident in Spain when their vehicle veered off a road and burst into flames near the Spanish city of Zamora, according to police. Jota is succeeded by his wife, Rute Cardoso — the pair married just weeks ago — and three children. GO FURTHER The heartbreaking death of Diogo Jota Getty Images Fluminense beat Al Hilal 2-1 in Orlando earlier today as the Club World Cup quarter-finals got underway. Martinelli scored the opening goal for the Brazilian side late in the first half with a fantastic solo effort. Marcos Leonardo equalised shortly after half-time but Hercules restored Fluminense's lead in the 70th minute, scoring off the bench for the second straight match. The winner of tonight's match will meet Fluminense at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday for the right to advance to the final. What a match that would be if Palmeiras win tonight to set up an all-Brazilian affair. Getty Images Chelsea beat 10-man Benfica 4-1 after extra time in a wild match in Charlotte, North Carolina to advance to tonight's quarter-final. After Reece James had given Chelsea a 1-0 lead with a goal from a direct free kick, the match was suspended in the 86th minute for nearly two hours due to severe weather in the area. Once the match resumed, Benfica miraculously equalised deep in stoppage time thanks to Angel Di Maria's goal from the penalty spot after VAR spotted a handball by Malo Gusto. The miracle ended there for Benfica, however, as Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second booking early in extra time. Chelsea retook the lead in the 108th minute as Christopher Nkunku finished off a scruffy rebound, before Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added late goals to wrap things up. Getty Images Palmeiras edged fellow Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarter-final. Playing at the same venue as tonight's match, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, a tetchy contest looked certain to be heading for penalties until Palmeiras finally broke through in the 100th minute. Second-half substitute Paulinho's strike into the bottom corner, which took a slight deflection on its way in, was the difference as Palmeiras sent their domestic rivals home. Getty Images Chelsea reached the knockout stages after finishing second in Group D. They began their Club World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, with Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez scoring the goals. Matchday 2 didn't go nearly as well for the English side, however, as they fell 3-1 to Flamengo. Neto again fired them into a 1-0 lead, but the Brazilian side turned things around with two goals in three minutes in the second half. And just a few minutes after that, Nicolas Jackson was sent off for a foolish and reckless foul. The defeat left Chelsea needing a result in the finale, which they got via a 3-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis. Getty Images Palmeiras advanced to the knockout stages after finishing in first place in Group A. They opened the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Porto in which they created the majority of chances but couldn't break through. The Brazilian side improved on Matchday 2, beating Al Ahly 2-0 thanks to an own goal and and a goal from Jose Manuel Lopez. Palmeiras were not assured of progression heading into the finale, and Matchday 3 was anything but comfortable for them. They fell behind 2-0 to Inter Miami in Atlanta while a high-scoring match between Porto and Al Ahly meant that the permutations were constantly changing. They were set to finish second in the group before goals in the final 10 minutes of normal time from Paulinho and Mauricio secured a 2-2 draw and lifted them to first place. Sam Bachman throwing error in 10th inning seals Angels' loss to Blue Jays
TORONTO — Myles Straw scored the winning run on a throwing error by pitcher Sam Bachman in the 10th inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to six games by beating the Angels 4-3 on Friday night. Straw, the automatic runner, scored from second when Bachman fielded Ernie Clement's sacrifice bunt and overthrew first base. Bachman (1-2) entered in the 10th and walked leadoff hitter Nathan Lukes, putting runners on first and second with nobody out for Clement. Chad Green (3-2) worked a scoreless inning for the win. Jo Adell tied it for the Angels with a three-run homer in the seventh. Andrés Giménez drove in the first run with a single for Toronto in the sixth. Giménez advanced to third on George Springer's single before leaving with an ankle injury. Giménez tweaked his left ankle covering second base on a steal Wednesday and did not play Thursday. He was scheduled for an MRI. Blue Jays left-hander Eric Lauer set down his first 12 batters before Adell doubled to begin the fifth. Adell was initially called out trying to advance but the Angels challenged and the call was overturned following a replay review. Giménez hit Adell in the face trying to tag him out at second. Adell was treated on the field and remained in the game. Toronto's Will Wagner doubled to open the sixth and advanced on a sacrifice before scoring on Giménez's hit. José Fermin replaced Angels starter Kyle Hendricks after Springer's single. Bo Bichette hit an RBI single and another run scored when shortstop Zach Neto bobbled Addison Barger's grounder for an error. Mike Trout and Taylor Ward chased Lauer with back-to-back singles to begin the seventh, and the Angels tied it when Adell greeted reliever Nick Sandlin with his 19th homer. Bachman's high throw sparked a celebration at home plate as Toronto improved to 30-16 at home. The Angels faced the Blue Jays on Independence Day for the eighth time, going 4-4 in those meetings. Blue Jays RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 4.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday against Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz (3-8, 5.44).
