Ajax end Galatasaray's long unbeaten streak with Europa League win
AMSTERDAM, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Ajax Amsterdam made sure of a place in the Europa League playoffs as they beat Galatasaray 2-1 at home on Thursday and went above the Turkish league leaders in the final group standings.
Ajax finished the group in 12th spot while Galatasaray were 14th, also through to the next phase, but saw their 26-game unbeaten run come to an end.
Bertrand Traore scored in the 23rd minute to put Ajax, who started the last night 16th in the standings, ahead before turning provider for Kian Fitz-Jim 13 minutes into the second half.
Galatasaray, whose last defeat was to Swiss club Young Boys in the preliminary round of the Champions League in August, had chances to preserve their record but only got a late consolation from Victor Osimhen in added time.
Nigerian international Osimhen had been guilty of missing the target with three good chances while substitute Michy Batshauyi squandered a sitter.
Ajax's opener came after battling play from striker Brian Brobbey, who with his back to goal and after falling to the ground, managed to lay the ball off for Chuba Akpom to fire in a shot that Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Musiera parried to Traore, who neatly tucked away the rebound.
A quick counter-attack led by full back Anton Gaael set up Ajax's second, with his cross not properly cleared allowing Traore to pass the loose ball for Fitz-Jim to finish.
Ajax's 41-year-old goalkeeper Remko Pasveer surprisingly wore the captain's armband instead of usual skipper Jordan Henderson, who started the game, leading Dutch media to speculate the former England international may be leaving the club.

Man Utd open Victor Osimhen talks as Emi Martinez makes transfer decision
Manchester United are set for a huge summer in the transfer market and they have already completed the signing of Wolves star Matheus Cunha, with plenty more deals expected to be done in the coming months Manchester United have plenty of work to do this summer as they look to bounce back from a poor campaign under Ruben Amorim. United endured their worst ever Premier League season as they finished 15th and also lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The Red Devils have already strengthened their squad with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while the likes of Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans have left the club after their contracts expired. Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected this summer, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia all likely to leave the club. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at some of the latest news and rumours from Old Trafford... Martinez makes decision According to ESPN Argentina, United have opened talks with Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez over a potential move to Old Trafford. Martinez is expected to leave Villa this summer and it is claimed that he would prefer to join United, having also been linked with Galatasaray and teams in the Saudi Pro League. The World Cup winner could replace Andre Onana as United's first-choice goalkeeper. Onana has made a series of errors since joining the club and has recently spoken out about rumours surrounding his future. Speaking at an event in Burkina Faso, Onana told Afrik-Foot: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" Osimhen talks opened Victor Osimhen looks set to leave Napoli this summer and Footmercato are reporting that United have resumed talks with the striker after he turned down a move to Al-Hilal. The report states that Galatasaray remain hopeful that they can convince Osimhen to join permanently after he scored 37 goals in 41 games during a loan spell last season, but United could now hijack the move. Amorim is keen to add more firepower to his squad after Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee disappointed last season, with the pair managing just 17 goals in a combined 105 appearances across all competitions. Leverkusen eye Man Utd target United have been linked with a move for Manchester City youngster James McAtee, but Bayer Leverkusen have now emerged as a potential destination for the midfielder. According to Sky Germany, McAtee has been identified as an option to replace Florian Wirtz as he is on the verge of joining Liverpool. And City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted the club may be forced to sell McAtee so the 22-year-old can play more regularly. "For the age, I'd like him to stay," Guardiola said back in April. "But I understand players want more minutes. He can play different positions but I don't know how the squad will be and we will see."

Dembele explains big changes he's made to put him on road to Ballon d'Or glory
Ousmane Dembele was in danger of failing to realise his potential but has just produced a career-best season as PSG claim Champions League glory - which now has him in the hunt for the Ballon d'Or Ousmane Dembele believes a more professional approach to life has changed his career as the PSG star is tipped to win the Ballon d'Or after proving a leading light for a PSG side that finally won the Champions League. The Frenchman has flourished since leaving Barcelona and a positional switch made him a key cog in Luis Enrique 's all-conquering team. Dembele's numbers skyrocketed, especially post-Christmas, as the 28-year-old went on to score 33 times. His exploits on the European stage have put him in pole position to claim football's most sought after individual prize. Dembele has long been tipped for big things but had struggled to realise his potential at Barcelona and, before that, Borussia Dortmund. Now the forward has confessed that a mindset shift really helped him with his approach to fitness and recovery allowing him to reach new heights - which is in stark contrast to his attitude previously. He told France Football, via Mundo Deportivo: "Now I'm a little more professional. I was already professional, but now I'm even more so. Now, even on my days off, I like to go to the training centre, recover, work with the physios. Before, I would go home, play NBA 2K, watch a bit of TV. I was also younger, it's normal. "But, in the end, you pay a high price, and I saw that especially at Barcelona . I arrived there young, I played from 20 to 26, and I had a lot of physical problems. I learned a lot, and it helped me. Now I know my body much better, and that's why I get injured less. I know when I'm good, but also when I need to slow down, pace myself in training." Dembele has been installed among those most likely to claim the Ballon d'Or. Often the player who lands the award has claimed one of the major trophies that year, which is why the PSG star is the hunt alongside the likes of Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal. "To begin with, I hope to be among the 30 nominees", he told France Football about his own chances of winning the Ballon d'Or. "I have had difficult years with injuries, poor performances as well. This season I think I have been consistent, so we will see what happens. "It would already be exceptional to have my name on the list. And being one of the favourites is already a great victory, although I hope to win it someday." The last Frenchman to win the Ballon d'Or was Karim Benzema, who did so back in 2022. Lionel Messi is the only player from PSG to have claimed the gong.

Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont
Spaun had got off to a horror start on Sunday SPAUN WINNER Tearful JJ Spaun sinks monster putt on final hole as 120/1 underdog pips Robert MacIntyre to US Open crown at Oakmont ROBERT MACINTYRE suffered the same Oakmont heartbreak as boyhood hero Colin Montgomerie as JJ Spaun pushed him into second place at the US open. At the fearsome course where Montgomerie was edged out in a play-off by Ernie Els in 1994, MacIntyre looked like going one better after a brilliant closing round of 68 saw him take the clubhouse lead at one over par. 5 American JJ Spaun won the US Open at Oakmont after a thrilling final round Credit: Getty 5 Spaun sparked wild scenes on 18 as he holed the longest putt of the whole week to win the US Open Credit: Reuters 5 Spaun celebrated with his wife and kids after his incredible Major win Credit: Reuters 5 Spaun shared a kiss with proud wife Melody Credit: Getty Spaun, who was also on one over with two holes to play, was the only man with a realistic chance of denying the young Scot. And he produced a wonder shot at the driveable par four 17th, smashing a 309 yard drive to within 18 feet of the flag. The eagle putt rolled past the hole, but Spaun showed nerves of steel to sink his three footer for birdie, and claim the outright lead. The stocky American still needed to make at least a par at the ultra-tough 18th to avoid a play-off. Spaun left a putt for victory at Sawgrass hanging in the jaws of the final hole - and he was blown away by Rory McIlroy when they returned for a three hole shoot out the next day. He made absolutely sure that could not happen again by sinking a bomb from 65 FEET at the last for a two shot victory. At one under par he was the only man to finish in red figures. He hung tough after that, produced a fantastic finishing flourish, and the world No 25 is now a worthy Major champion. Eagle-eyed fans spot Rory McIlroy's 'unrepeatable' magic trick in furious fit of rage at US Open It was hard on MacIntyre, who was the only player in the final SIXTEEN groups on the course to break par on day four. His weekend rounds of 69-68 would have made him a worthy winner, if world No 25 Spaun had not shown such grit after a horror start saw him drop five shots in the first six holes. MacIntyre knew he could not have done any more. He commented: 'All I can say is that I'm absolutely delighted with the way I played today. 'I got off to a rough start with a couple of early bogeys, but sinking a sixty footer for eagle on the fourth showed you can never tell what is going to happen next here 'I could see no-one was getting away from me among the guys who started out in front of me, so I had to dig in, dig in, and dig in some more. I did that. I did my best.'
