Two teams skated and checked each other around the rink to try and take home the win.
The skate rink's co-owner said this is the roller derby league's first major event at their rink, and they're happy to share the space.
'They're a great group to work with, they help out a lot, so it's just nice that we can give them somewhere they can call home,' said Mikhayla Dugan, co-owner of Gem City Skate.

'It's very intense, honestly. I'm still a little confused about it, but like watching them going around, it's like five points each, I guess,' said spectator Yolanda Harris.
Next up, Gem City Skate will be hosting a Latin night at the rink on June 7 from 11:30 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Illegal fireworks negatively affecting Carson residents: ‘I think it's not going to stop'

Warning: The video above contains flashing lights. Viewer discretion is advised. The city of Carson earlier this year made the use, sale and discharge of fireworks illegal within the community, but the new policy doesn't seem to be stopping people from putting on their own fireworks shows. The ordinance, passed by the city council in March, makes it so that the public display of fireworks must be put on by a pyrotechnic operator with a permit. That includes sparklers, smoke bombs and fireworks designated as 'safe and sane.' Those who are not in possession of the permit could face fines and possibly a misdemeanor conviction; the fines are $2,000 for the first violation, $3,000 for the second violation (within a year of the first violation) and $5,000 for each additional violation after that. All fines are increased by 10% if not paid or appealed within 15 days of the issuance of date. Any unpaid fines will accrue 10% interest each year. Mural depicting Kobe and Gigi Bryant in Los Angeles vandalized again Those penalties, part of the 'You Light It, We Cite It' campaign, are not appearing to stop some residents from lighting off fireworks. Video recently taken by local residents and shared with KTLA shows an elaborate fireworks display over the neighborhood. According to one woman, the fireworks are 'disturbing.' '[The fireworks have] been very loud…they shake the house and they wake and scare the kids,' one resident, Lia Flores, said. 'Hearing them cry and then not be able to get back to bed is a problem. We have been here for five years now, and we have experienced this multiple times.' Area residents told KTLA that they believe local businesses are renting out space in warehouse parking lots for groups of people to light off the fireworks. Those businesses don't have any issues paying the fines, residents say. And while city officials say the increased penalties were put into place to protect people and animals who could be traumatized by the loud explosions, neighbors say there just isn't enough enforcement. Girl, 4, allowed to stay in U.S. for lifesaving care after deportation controversy 'It can last for 10 minutes or up to half an hour,' said Joanne, another Carson resident. 'I ask my husband to call 911 because I think it's not going to stop.' 'It's not right, especially at night,' she continued. 'The city needs to do something about it.' Carson residents are reminded that they can anonymously report firework activity to the city's public safety department; however, with the Fourth of July a month away, the complaints may continue to pile up as the night sky lights up due to the illegal fireworks displays. ‘A part of my soul was stolen from me': Emotions run high as Dana Chandler is sentenced in 2002 double-murder case

WESTMORELAND (KSNT) – Dana Chandler learned her fate this week after being convicted in the 2002 killings of Karen Harkness and Mike Sisco. Judge Cheryl Rios in Westmoreland delivered Chandler's sentence on Tuesday, June 3. The sentencing, which lasted for a few hours, included appearances from the children and friends of Sisco and Harkness who delivered emotional witness impact statements. 'Have you ever been so terrified of someone that your heart races? That you stop breathing? That your muscles tense up?' Hailey Seel, Chandler's daughter, said. 'You can imagine how it happened if you saw a ghost, or a monster under your bed, or a horror movie monster or a killer. For me, that's for my mom.' 'She loved her students tremendously': Topeka teacher killed in Highway 24 crash Chandler held a piece of paper to the left side of her face for much of the sentencing. At one point, she accused Rios of displaying behavior 'unbecoming of a judge' while Seel was still delivering her victim impact statement. 'I have my paper on my face because I choose not to be made a spectacle of,' Chandler said. Seel, as she finished delivering her statement, asked Rios to be lenient with her mother's sentencing if Chandler confessed and displayed remorse. 'I would ask that you have mercy on her,' Seel said. 'I'm humble enough today to recognize that my guilt is deserving of death just as much as hers.' Erin Sutton, a child of Harkness, asked Rios to punish Chandler for 2002 killings. She asked for two life sentences without the possibility of parole for Chandler before talking about how Harkness' death has impacted her. 'My mom's absence has left an unfillable hole in my heart and in my family,' Sutton said. 'A part of my soul was stolen from me.' Man arrested again in connection to killing 35-year-old Topeka local in 2022 Rios sentenced Chandler to two life sentences for the deaths of Sisco and Harkness. She must serve at least 25 years before she is eligible for parole. Chandler's sentencing marks the end of her third trial for the deaths of Harkness and Sisco. Sisco, Chandler's estranged husband, was found dead alongside Harkness, his fiancé, in their bed together in 2002 after they were shot multiple times. For more crime news, click here. Weather Fact Wednesday: The Science Of Atmospheric Rivers

Everyone knows what a river is, but do you know about the concept of an atmospheric river? The majority of water vapor outside of the tropics is transported via atmospheric rivers, which are comparatively long, narrow areas in the atmosphere that resemble rivers in the sky. Since they are vital to the Earth's climate because they control a majority of the moisture flow from the tropics to the poles, they then have a hugh impact on sea ice, air temperatures, and other climate-related variables, since they have an effect in the growth of clouds. Not all atmospheric rivers are harmful though, as the majority are weak systems that often generate beneficial rain or snow that is necessary for the water supply. Unfortunately, the good also brings with it the bad. For instance, the commonly recognized 'Pineapple Express,' which can carry precipitation from Hawaii to the US West Coast, may bring about mudslides, gridlocked roads, and significant property and personal damage. Like hurricanes, atmospheric rivers are rated, but unlike hurricanes, their ratings take into account the possibility that they may also be helpful. Category 1 (weakest) to Category 5 (outstanding) are the ratings' ranges. Thus, the issue arises: do atmospheric rivers have an effect on D.C. and the surrounding area? Indeed, as atmospheric rivers have affected Washington, D.C. even though most are associated with the West Coast. One recent example was the atmospheric river that created flooding and a lot of rain earlier in May of 2025 along the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
