Comedian John Oliver to help rename Detroit Tigers' minor-league affiliate
The Detroit Tigers' Double-A affiliate is the Erie SeaWolves. At least they're called that, for now. As announced on the HBO Max's "Last Week Tonight," late-night host John Oliver has chosen the minor league SeaWolves for a major rebrand. Advertisement This effort started on a May 4 episode of the show, where Oliver analyzed the eccentricities of minor league baseball teams and offered a complete rebranding of one organization. "We are willing to use all of our resources and stupidity to give one minor league baseball team a total rebrand. We will give you a new team name. A new mascot. We will even throw you a theme night. It will be personalized and it will be bespoke," he said on the show. CURRENT TIGERS: Detroit Tigers activate catcher Jake Rogers from injured list for Tarik Skubal start According to Oliver, 47 minor league teams contacted the show pitching to be chosen, and at the end the SeaWolves were selected. Advertisement The SeaWolves have not been informed how exactly the show wants to rebrand them according to team president Greg Coleman: "We've had a lot of media inquiries, starting with the local media, and we have to tell them we would also like to know what's going on," he told Benjamin Hill. The SeaWolves have been the Tigers' double-A affiliate since 2001. Before that, they were the affiliated with the Anaheim Angels from 1999-2000 and with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1995-98 (hence the name SeaWolves and pirate theming). Local umpire Brian Fuller to work NCAA Division III College World Series in FNL part II 'It's very intense, honestly. Erie SeaWolves staff excited for rebranding courtesy of Last Week Tonight
The Erie SeaWolves, a minor league baseball team, have been selected for a rebranding by John Oliver's show 'Last Week Tonight.' The selection was announced during a segment on minor league baseball, where Oliver highlighted the creativity and fun promotions associated with these teams. The SeaWolves were one of 47 teams that submitted for the rebranding process. John Oliver, HBO's late-night host, to give Erie SeaWolves a complete rebrand 'I honestly thought I would find out in an email first, but basically finding out via television was pretty surprising,' said Greg Coleman, President of Erie SeaWolves Baseball. Coleman said he was surprised to learn about the team's selection for rebranding through John Oliver's television announcement. However, the rebranding comes with a catch: The SeaWolves will have no input in the process, as it will be handled entirely by the show's creative team. Coleman noted that the current team name and mascot are not particularly creative, suggesting room for improvement. Christy Buchar, Director of Merchandise for the Erie SeaWolves, expressed enthusiasm about the potential for new merchandise that will coordinate with the new branding. She hopes to sell both current and new merchandise to fans. Erie's John Oliver responds to Last Week Tonight's John Oliver With the rebranding led by 'Last Week Tonight,' the Erie SeaWolves are poised for a creative transformation that could enhance their appeal and merchandise sales. John Oliver, HBO's late-night host, to give Erie SeaWolves a complete rebrand
Erie, Pa (WJET/WFXP) — The Erie SeaWolves were chosen overnight for a complete rebrand, selected from a list of 47 minor league baseball teams across the nation. John Oliver, the host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, chose the SeaWolves to receive a complete rebrand. From the name to the mascot, and even a theme night, Oliver promised that they would research the area, using 'all of our resources and stupidity,' to come up with something that no one else in the league has, and that can only come from Erie. Oliver said that there were a number of good reasons the SeaWolves were picked, but the main reason was that the Erie SeaWolves play baseball nowhere near the sea. 'Which, yeah, that's a problem, Erie. We can help you fix that,' he said. According to Oliver, the SeaWolves will have no input in their rebranding. The original offer included three conditions: You can't ask them any questions, you can't give them any notes, and you must do whatever ideas the show comes up with. He paraphrased his favorite wedding invitation, which said that 'you will take what we have, and you will like it.' All that needs to be done to get started is for the contract to be signed, which he said is being sent out. 'And I promise this is going to be great,' Oliver said as he closed out the show. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs every Sunday at 11 p.m. and can be watched exclusively on HBO Max. If you wish to watch the announcement of the picking of the Erie SeaWolves, you can find it on the most recent episode, Season 12 Episode 12 which aired May 18, 2025. This comes just over a month after Erie got attention on the show when John Oliver mentioned the canceled plans for a $300 million recycling plant for Erie, along with a historic anecdote about Mad Anthony Wayne and how his corpse was boiled in oil to have his skeleton shipped back to his home town, stating 'and thanks to the foiled recycling plant, remains the only thing I will ever know about Erie, Pennsylvania.'
